The University of Central Florida (UCF) is a public research university with a vast network of campus locations designed to cater to the diverse needs of its students. A Legacy of Growth and Innovation
UCF's origins are rooted in the space race. Following President John F. Kennedy's 1962 speech about landing a crewed flight on the moon, Central Florida's proximity to Cape Canaveral propelled the region into prominence. Local leaders and residents advocated for increased access to higher education on the Space Coast, leading to the establishment of the university. On June 10, 1963, Governor Farris Bryant signed Senate Bill No. 125 into law, authorizing the creation of a new state university in East Central Florida.
Founded as a non-segregated and coeducational institution, the university's initial mission was to educate students for careers in engineering and technological fields. In 1965, Charles Millican was appointed as the first president of the university. He chose the name Florida Technological University and co-designed the Pegasus seal. Millican also created the university's slogan, "Reach for the Stars," and emphasized "accent on excellence" and "accent on the individual." The concentric-circle campus layout, inspired by Walt Disney's plans, has become a model for other universities.
In 1978, Trevor Colbourn, the university's second president, recognized the diversification of UCF's academic programs. He established the honors program and the university's first satellite campus. Main Campus: The Heart of UCF
Since 1968, the 1,420-acre main campus in east Orlando has served as UCF's home. The campus is designed to be pedestrian-oriented, featuring a series of concentric circles. Gemini Blvd, the outermost circle, serves as the main road for vehicular traffic. Pegasus Circle houses the student union, with the John C. Hitt Library located to the south. Student housing is situated along the campus perimeter, while the south side includes recreation and wellness facilities, a leisure pool, and a recreation park.
The Central Florida Research Park, located south of the main campus, is the seventh-largest research park in the nation and the largest in Florida, housing over 116 corporations. The main campus is recognized as one of the safest branches nationally compared to all branches in the US.
John C. Hitt Library
The John C. Hitt Library is the primary repository for print and media collections. Located on UCF's main campus, the library is open to students, faculty, and the public seven days a week. The five-story building was the first academic structure on campus. Leonardo Nierman's sculpture "Flame of Hope" stands outside the entrance, and his stained-glass window "Genesis" is displayed on the third floor. In 2012, the library was dedicated to John C. Hitt to honor his 20th anniversary as university president. The library underwent a complete renovation and expansion in 1984, which was dedicated in February 1985 by President Trevor Colbourn.
