Knights Plaza: A Hub of Athletics, Entertainment, and Community at UCF
Knights Plaza at the University of Central Florida (UCF) is more than just a shopping center; it's an athletic village, a hub for student life, and a symbol of the university's growth and ambition. Located on the main campus in Orlando, Florida, Knights Plaza embodies the spirit and energy of UCF.
A Vision for an Athletic Village
Knights Plaza was designed as an athletic village, bringing together UCF's major sports venues in one central location. The football team plays in FBC Mortgage Stadium (formerly Bright House Networks Stadium and Spectrum Stadium), the men's and women's basketball teams compete in Addition Financial Arena (formerly CFE Arena), and the volleyball team plays in The Venue. This concentration of athletic facilities creates a vibrant atmosphere, especially on game days.
The Towers at Knights Plaza: Living in the Heart of the Action
Adding to the dynamic environment are The Towers at Knights Plaza, four residential towers (Tower I, II, III, and IV) that house approximately 2,000 students, with 500 in each tower. Unlike other on-campus housing, residents of The Towers sign annual contracts, committing to a full academic year (fall, spring, and summer). The apartments offer various floor plans, ranging from one-bedroom to four-bedroom units, with the four-bedroom/two-bathroom layout being the most common. Tower III is designated as a learning community for students in the Burnett Honors College.
Retail and Restaurant Space: A Convenient Hub
Knights Plaza boasts 183,000 square feet (17,000 m2) of retail and restaurant space, providing students, faculty, and the surrounding community with a variety of options. The retail stores are strategically located along the streets leading to the stadiums, creating a pedestrian-friendly environment.
Entertainment and Events: More Than Just Shopping
Throughout the year, Knights Plaza hosts a variety of events to engage students and the community. A two-story outdoor movie screen in the middle of the plaza shows movies, with attendees often enjoying picnics and food delivered from Knights Plaza vendors. Before the movies, contests, block parties, and other events take place, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Light Up UCF: A Holiday Spectacle
During the holiday season (November-January), Knights Plaza transforms into a winter wonderland with an outdoor ice rink and nightly events. Light Up UCF features a high-tech light show with over 75,000 lights dancing to holiday music, and live concerts by bands like the Marching Knights and local artists. The inaugural year in 2008 attracted over 150,000 attendees, establishing it as a popular holiday tradition.
Overcoming Challenges and Adapting to Change
Knights Plaza has faced challenges, including difficulties in filling its retail space. The lack of free parking was initially cited as a contributing factor, leading the university to suspend parking charges in one of the plaza's parking garages on non-event days. Some businesses, such as Nature's Table Cafe and Mau's Hair and Nails, closed shortly after opening, and other retailers never opened their doors, resulting in vacant storefronts.
Addressing Retail Vacancy: Events and Future Development
To address the retail vacancy and boost retailer confidence, events are frequently held in the plaza and its venues. However, this has sometimes created traffic issues for students trying to reach "All Knight Study," the only on-campus study facility located in the plaza.
Initial development plans included additional retail space in two more phases. However, due to the leasing challenges, these plans have been delayed and revised. Instead, the focus shifted to expanding and renovating existing athletic venues, such as the UCF Soccer and Track Stadium (expanded to 2,000 seats in 2011) and Jay Bergman Field (planned renovations in 2013 to add 1,000 seats and new luxury suites).
The Evolution of UCF Athletics

Early Years and Mascot Evolution
Classes began at UCF in 1968, and in 1971, the university held its first Homecoming, coinciding with the basketball season, which was the university’s first varsity sport. In 1971, the first "skit knight" was held, then referred to as "Nite of Knights," and 1975 saw the first homecoming parade. Homecoming has been a tradition at UCF since its earliest years and has become a staple of fall programming.
The university's first mascot was the Citronaut, designed by Norman Van Meter. However, students found the Citronaut unpopular, and in 1970, the "Knights of Pegasus" was chosen as the new mascot. In 1993, the teams were rebranded as the Golden Knights. In 2007, the teams' names reverted to "Knights."
Conference Affiliations and Growth
The UCF varsity athletic program was a charter member of the Sunshine State Conference in 1975. The school moved up to Division I in 1984. In 1996, UCF advanced to I-A (FBS) in football. UCF joined Conference USA (C-USA) in all sports in 2005, the Big East in 2011 (which became the American Athletic Conference (AAC) in 2013), and finally, the Big 12 Conference in September 2021.
Landmark Victories and Achievements
UCF's athletic teams have achieved significant victories on state and national stages. The university is now the youngest Power Four institution in the country. UCF teams have earned 12 NCAA postseason team appearances across all sports and conference championship titles in men’s soccer, women’s tennis, and rowing.
The construction of the on-campus stadium in 2007 was a pivotal moment in UCF's history, symbolizing the university's ambition and potential. The stadium has hosted dramatic wins, memorable performances, and championship moments.

UCF's History and Growth
UCF has transformed from a vacant piece of land into a vast and expanding university.
The Early Years
In the 1960s, as the space industry boomed in Central Florida, the need for a "space university" became apparent. William Dial lobbied for a public university to aid the growing space industry, leading to the establishment of Florida Technological University (FTU), which would later become UCF.
Name Change and Expansion
In 1978, Florida Technological University became the University of Central Florida (UCF). The 1980s saw increased enrollment and the establishment of research facilities. In the 1990s, traditions such as Spirit Splash and Knightro emerged.
The 2000s and Beyond
The 2000s were a turning point for UCF, with the construction of an on-campus stadium, a new arena, and increased off-campus housing options. UCF's downtown campus expansion, completed in 2018, brought thousands of students to the downtown area.
