UCF Memory Mall: A Hub of History, Traditions, and Knightly Spirit
The University of Central Florida (UCF), originally founded as Florida Technological University in 1963, has grown into a major public research university with a vibrant campus life and a rich tapestry of traditions. Among the most cherished of these is Memory Mall, a sprawling green space that has evolved from a simple parking lot into the heart of UCF's pre-game festivities and a focal point for student gatherings.
From Parking Lot to Hallowed Ground: The Evolution of Memory Mall
In the early years of UCF, the area now known as Memory Mall served a much more utilitarian purpose: it was a parking lot. However, as the university expanded and its traditions took root, the need for a central gathering place became apparent. The transformation of the parking lot into Memory Mall marked a significant step in the development of UCF's campus culture, providing a dedicated space for students, alumni, and visitors to come together and celebrate their Knightly spirit.
A Tailgating Paradise: Game Day on Memory Mall
Today, Memory Mall is synonymous with tailgating. On football game days, the area transforms into a sea of black and gold, as fans set up tents, fire up grills, and create a vibrant atmosphere of camaraderie. Alumni and students can reserve their spots in advance, ensuring a prime location to enjoy food, drinks, and the company of fellow Knights.
The location of Memory Mall, situated across Gemini Boulevard from Addition Financial Arena, makes it the perfect spot for tailgating. It is also sandwiched directly between the CFE Arena and the Student Union, Memory Mall is a quarter mile-long strip that turns into tailgate central on game days.
A Canvas for Traditions: Spirit Splash and More
Beyond tailgating, Memory Mall also serves as a venue for some of UCF's most beloved traditions. The Knighting, a formal convocation welcoming new Knights to campus, is held on Memory Mall.

Spirit Splash: A Homecoming Tradition
Among the most iconic events held on Memory Mall is Spirit Splash, a Homecoming tradition that dates back to 1995. During Spirit Splash, students gather around the Reflecting Pond and charge into the water to catch collectible rubber ducks and commemorative T-shirts. This wet and wild pep rally embodies the energetic spirit of UCF and has been voted one of the best college traditions in the nation.
Other Events
Throughout the year, Memory Mall hosts a variety of other events, including outdoor concerts, movie nights, and student organization gatherings. Its central location and open space make it an ideal venue for bringing the UCF community together.
The Spirit of UCF: More Than Just a Tailgate
Memory Mall is more than just a place to tailgate or attend events; it's a symbol of the spirit of UCF. It represents the university's commitment to creating a vibrant campus community and fostering a sense of belonging among its students, alumni, and fans. As one of the focal points around campus, it’s quickly become an area for Knights to gather.
Traditions and Athletics
UCF's athletic program has grown significantly since the university's early days. The Knights didn't field a football team until 1979 and didn't begin competing in the current NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) until 1996. Despite this relatively short history, UCF has achieved impressive success on the field, including multiple conference championships and bowl game appearances. The traditions surrounding UCF athletics, such as the Knight Walk, Knight Lights, and the singing of the alma mater, contribute to the overall sense of community and pride on campus.
"Charge On": A Unifying Phrase
The phrase "Charge On" has become a unifying cry for UCF students, athletes, and alumni. It represents the university's drive to succeed and its commitment to pushing boundaries. The Charge On shield, affixed to a locker room wall, serves as a constant reminder that the program will continue to rise.

The costume design has undergone a number of revisions, most notably in 2007 when UCF released a new logo and Knightro's garb was redone to match. A group of eight UCF students-known as Team Knightro--play the role behind the mask. Knightro made its debut in 1994 and is regularly involved in community service events around UCF and Orlando.
Black and Gold: The Colors of UCF
The official UCF colors of black and gold were designated in 1968. The color combination is both dignified and works well through many uses.
The Reflecting Pond: A Landmark with a Unique History
The Reflecting Pond has a unique place in UCF history. It’s been around since the first year of classes and even served as a commencement ceremony location for several years. Today, it’s a great spot to relax in between classes and is hands-down one of the most popular backdrops for graduating Knights.
