Bachelor's Degree in Psychology: A Foundation for Success

The bachelor’s in psychology program at UCF is designed to provide you with a strong education in the core areas in the psychological sciences while offering the flexibility of designing your curriculum around different areas of emphasis. The Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology leads to a broad foundation of knowledge in the discipline of psychology. One of our primary goals is to educate students to intelligently evaluate psychological information that they are encountered with in the real world. By completing this major, students will understand basic psychology terminology and concepts used in, statistical and research methods, physiological psychology, and history and systems. Students will also understand what constitutes scholarly sources, and be able to access them.

Curriculum and Learning Experiences

As a psychology major, you’ll learn basic psychology terminology and concepts used in statistical and research methods, physiological psychology, and history and systems. Throughout your coursework, learn from leaders in the field of clinical psychology, industrial-organizational psychology, human factors psychology and neuroscience. You’ll also be given the unique experience of participating in two career-readiness and competency courses based on National Association of Colleges and Employers recommendations, which help you with writing a resume, applying for jobs, interviewing skills and navigating the opportunities that come with being in one of the largest degree programs at UCF.

Real-World Application

After graduating with your bachelor’s in psychology, you’ll be able to take what you’ve learned and apply it to your work and around the community. All psychology majors are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities such as research, volunteer, and internships as well as our various student organizations that are affiliated with the major.

Degree Requirements

Students who change degree programs and select this major must adopt the most current catalog Departmental Residency Requirement: at least 21 semester hours of regularly scheduled 3000-4000 level courses must be taken from the UCF Psychology Department Students must earn a grade of "C" (2.0) or better in each course used to satisfy the CPP, Core Requirements, Restricted Electives and Science Electives. Students may file an appeal to their Academic Success Coach (ASC) to be granted the use of one "C-" (1.75) toward the major requirements. Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 in all courses satisfying major requirements. If additional Psychology courses are taken beyond the minimum required (e.g. additional restricted electives), those courses will be included in the GPA calculation. Students can select only one Track. Co-op or internship credit cannot be used in this major without prior approval Additional requirements exist for students pursuing the Honors in the Major program. All prerequisites of courses taught within the College of Sciences will be enforced. Courses designated in 1 (General Education Program) and 2 (Common Program Prerequisites) are usually completed in the first 60 hours.

Online Psychology Program

Online Psychology, BSPsychology (B.S.) may be completed fully online, although not all elective options or program prerequisites may be offered online. A rich and fascinating field, psychology is filled with robust opportunities for personal growth and the opportunity to kick-start a rewarding career. Through UCF Online, you will learn the foundations of psychology that will prepare you for your future path. You’ll study terminology, research and statistical methods, physiology, psychology history and more. All students are encouraged to take part in research, fieldwork, internships and student organizations to deepen their understanding and put their classroom learning into real-world practice. A capstone project is also available for students who wish to dig deeper.

Psychology Minor: Specializing Your Knowledge

The Psychology Minor permits emphasis of several areas; Clinical Psychology, Human Factors Psychology, and Industrial/Organizational Psychology. When designing a minor, select courses which strengthen graduate school preparation and/or employment potential. Emphasis areas will not appear on the transcript.

Minor Requirements

A minimum GPA of 2.0 is required in all courses used to satisfy the minor. Students must maintain a minimum GPA of "C" (2.0) in the minor. Students may make a request to the Psychology Department’s Director of Academic Advising to be granted the use of one C- toward the minor requirements. At least 12 hours used in the minor must be earned at UCF within the Psychology Department. Prerequisite Courses Students must satisfy each course's prerequisites before enrolling in the class.

Admission to UCF is competitive, so we encourage you to apply early. As an incoming first-year student, you should apply between September and November of your high school senior year if you plan to enroll the following summer or fall semester. By applying early, you may benefit from scholarship consideration and housing availability.
