UCF Men's Rugby: A Legacy of Aggression, Athleticism, and National Championships

The UCF Men's Rugby Club, a testament to commitment and athletic prowess, boasts a rich history marked by consistent success and a drive for national dominance. Established in 1988, the club has grown from humble beginnings to become a formidable force in collegiate rugby.

The Genesis of a Rugby Program

In 1988, a small but dedicated group of players, many of whom were unfamiliar with the sport, laid the foundation for the UCF Men's Rugby Club. These pioneers handled the administrative tasks, securing the club's recognition through UCF Club Sports and reserving fields for practice. They took to the field wearing borrowed jerseys. Their first match was played in the Citrus Bowl Tournament, wearing borrowed jerseys and filling out the side with some alumni who were playing for the local men's club, and they were on their way!

Developing a Distinctive Style

UCF Rugby quickly developed an aggressive style of play, capitalizing on their physicality and athleticism as they learned the intricacies of rugby. This approach proved successful, propelling the team to the forefront of collegiate rugby in Florida and the Southeast. Since then UCF has consistently been one of the top teams in Florida and the Southeast. Players consistently earned spots on All-Star teams, a testament to the program's talent and development.

The Pinnacle: National Championship Glory

The pinnacle of UCF Rugby's success arrived in 2013. The team advanced through the regional playoffs, culminating in winning the national Division 1 AA championship, upsetting Lindenwood University in the final, scoring on the last play of the game. This monumental victory marked a turning point for the program, solidifying its place among the nation's elite.

Riding the momentum of their 2013 triumph, UCF continued its dominant run in 2014. They followed up this unprecedented achievement by again advancing through the playoffs in 2014, beating Arizona in the final for their second consecutive National Championship. The team's unwavering determination and exceptional teamwork propelled them to their second consecutive national title.

A Near Three-Peat and Continued Aspirations

In 2015, UCF was in a position to Three-peat in 2015, but came up just short, losing to Cal-Davis in the championship game by 4 points. A tremendous run by any measure. Despite falling short of a third consecutive championship.

Since that high water mark, UCF has reached the regional playoffs several times and continues to aspire to the National Championship. The program remains focused on achieving its ultimate goal: another national championship.
