A History of UCF Softball Coaches: Building a Legacy of Success
The UCF Knights softball program, since its inception in 2002, has a rich history shaped by dedicated coaches who have led the team to conference championships, NCAA Tournament appearances, and national recognition. From the program's founding under Renee Luers-Gillispie to its current era under Cindy Ball-Malone, the Knights have consistently strived for excellence on and off the field.
The Early Years: Renee Luers-Gillispie Era (2002-2018)
Renee Luers-Gillispie established the UCF softball program from the ground up, starting in 2002. In the inaugural season, the Black and Gold had a 46-19 record and posted a 21-game winning streak, setting an A-Sun record. Gillispie's impact was immediate, as she guided the Knights to their first Atlantic Sun Tournament Championship in 2005, earning the team an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. That year, UCF recorded its first postseason win with a 5-3 victory at Florida.
Gillispie's teams consistently achieved success, marked by four conference championships, including the program’s first regular season and conference titles in 2015. The Knights earned seven NCAA Regional bids during her tenure, including a historic streak of three consecutive appearances that all culminated in the Regional Final.
Milestones and Accolades Under Gillispie
Throughout her 17 years at UCF, Gillispie amassed a record of 625-403-1. In 2008, her squad captured the Conference USA Championship, securing an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The team's 49 wins that season were the most in program history. Gillispie also reached her 500th career win in 2008.
Individually, Gillispie's players garnered significant recognition. Stephanie Best was named A-Sun Player of the Year three consecutive years and became the first UCF softball player drafted into the National Pro Fastpitch league. In 2015, Shelby Turnier became the program's first NFCA All-American, while Mackenzie Audas earned the first Capital One Academic All-America honors in school history. Gillispie earned American Athletic Conference Coaching Staff of the Year accolades twice, guiding Turnier to The American Pitcher of the Year and Jessica Ujvari to The American Player of the Year honors.

Academic Excellence and Player Development
Beyond on-field achievements, Gillispie emphasized academic success. Her players earned 62 all-conference honors, five conference player of the year awards, two conference pitchers of the year awards, and several academic accolades. Four former Knights went on to play in the NPF.
Cindy Ball-Malone: A New Era of Knights Softball (2019-Present)
Cindy Ball-Malone, known as "Coach Bear," took over the UCF softball program in 2019 and has since led the Knights to unprecedented success. Ball-Malone joined the Knights following four seasons at Boise State University. She brought a plethora of coaching experience into her first stop as a Division I head coach, highlighted by a two-year stint on staff with the Washington Huskies. In those two seasons, she served as recruiting coordinator and was responsible for the development of the Husky pitching staff. She graduated from Pacific in 2002 with a bachelor's degree in sports sciences and earned her master's in education in 2006.
Dominance in the American Athletic Conference
Through the final half of the Knights’ tenure as members of the American Athletic Conference from 2019-23, Ball-Malone established her team as one of the league’s elite programs. The 2022 season was a banner year, with UCF winning both the conference regular season and tournament titles. The Knights earned the No. 16 seed in the NCAA Tournament, hosted a regional tournament, and advanced to the super regionals.
Historic NCAA Tournament Run in 2022
In 2022, UCF hosted a regional for the first time, winning the regional final by defeating Michigan 9 to 4. The Knights went on to lose in the Super Regionals to that year's Women's College World Series (WCWS) winners, Oklahoma.
Individual Standouts Under Ball-Malone
Ball-Malone's coaching has produced several outstanding players. In 2022, UCF First Baseman Shannon Doherty became known as the "Walk-Off Queen" of UCF with three walk-off home runs in wins during that season. Jada Cody finished her career as the Knights' all-time leader in doubles, 3rd all-time in total hits, and 2nd in RBIs and home runs. On April 28, 2023, UCF Pitcher Sarah Willis pitched a full 7 inning perfect game in a 7-0 win over the Houston Cougars. Freshman catcher Beth Damon represented UCF’s second All-American in 2025, tabbed to D1Softball’s freshman second team, and joined Vega and Izzy Mertes on the All-Big 12 Freshman Team.

Transition to the Big 12 Conference
UCF ended their 10 years in the American Athletic Conference as the league's most successful program up to that time, with an overall conference record of 126-48-1. UCF Softball's record of excellent performance carried over into the Big-12 Conference, with the Knights playing in their first Big-12 season in 2024. During that season, the Knights won five of their nine conference series (including two sweeps of conference opponents), and Head Coach Cindy Ball-Malone earned her 200th career win at UCF with a road series win at Texas Tech. At the end of their first season in the Big 12, the Knights placed 5th in the conference.
The 2025 Season
The 2025 season was expected to be a re-build year, as the team was made up of roughly 60% Sophomore and Freshmen players. Despite that, the Knights finished 35-24-1 overall (.500 in conference play), and earned their first 3-game series sweep on the road against a top-five ranked opponent in program history. They tacked on four more top-25 wins in the regular season before moving on to their 5th-straight NCAA Tournament appearance, and 3rd regional final in five seasons.
UCF continued their tradition of pitching excellence as well, thanks in large part to Freshman standout Isabella Vega. During her first year with the program, Vega was one of the Big-12's best pitchers (the Big-12's ERA leader in conference play), and by the end of the season earned First Team All-Big 12, D1Softball Freshman All-America First Team, and NFCA All Region First Team honors.
Coaching Staff and Support
Beth Watson is in her seventh season as assistant coach with the Knights softball program in 2007-08. Her on-field responsibilities include working with the infield and hitting. In her first six years at UCF, Watson has seen her players enjoy tremendous success. Among them was shortstop Stephanie Best, who was the first Knight to be drafted by the National Pro Fastpitch league. In 2007, Watson guided first baseman Breanne Javier and center fielder Kacie Feaster to First Team All-Conference honors and second baseman Hillary Barrow to a place on the C-USA All-Freshman squad.
Traditions and Rivalries
The UCF Knights softball program has developed a number of traditions that have been passed down through the years, enhancing the game-day experience for players and fans alike.

The War on I-4
The UCF Knights have had a long time rivalry with the University of South Florida Bulls. This rivalry, known as "the War on I-4", has encompassed all sports played by both schools, but it has been just as intense in Softball as it has in any other sport played by the two rival universities.
Series with the Florida Gators
The UCF Knights Softball program and the University of Florida Gators Softball program have a long history of playing each other, going back to the 2003 season. In more recent years (between 2021 and 2025), the Knights have closed the margin, winning three of the past seven matchups in the series.
Matchups with the Florida Atlantic Owls
The UCF and Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Softball programs have the longest history of any of UCF's in-state rivalries, with the two teams first squaring off in UCF's first softball season (2002). Since 2014, the Knights have turned the tables on the Owls, with UCF dominating the series by a 12 to 2 margin.
UCF Softball Complex: Home of the Knights
UCF's home field is the UCF Softball Complex, which opened in 2006. Known as "the Plex", the facility has a normal seating capacity of 600 within the facility, but also has seating beyond the outfield fence to accommodate additional fans. In 2021, the Plex received major renovations, which included upgrades to the locker rooms, training facilities, staff offices, and the outfield. Major upgrades have also been made over the years to the field turf, and state-of-the-art Yakkertech technology has been added to the stadium to allow for better data tracking on ball movement on the field during the games.
