Nurturing Future Educators: An Overview of the UCF Teaching Academy
The state of Florida is currently grappling with a pressing need for qualified educators. Stephanie Luke, a math and science education instructor at UCF and chair of the Lake County School Board, emphasizes, "We have a shortage of certified teachers." In response to this challenge, a collaborative initiative has emerged between the UCF College of Community Innovation and Education and Lake County Schools. This partnership aims to cultivate a pipeline of aspiring teachers, providing high school students with a clear pathway to earn a bachelor's degree and secure teaching certifications, ultimately addressing the shortage of educators in Lake County.
The Tavares Teaching Academy: A Foundation for Aspiring Educators
At the heart of this initiative lies the Tavares Teaching Academy, a program now in its second year at Tavares High School. The academy's design extends beyond traditional introductory courses. It offers specialized curricula and hands-on classroom experiences, fostering meaningful collaborations between UCF elementary education faculty and students. Bonnie Watkins, the Tavares High School teacher who leads the academy, states, "Our students receive the benefit of shared resources from UCF, as well as advice from a UCF instructor."
The overarching vision of the Tavares Teaching Academy, as articulated by Luke, "is to produce highly qualified graduates who are from Lake County and will come back to teach in Lake County." This localized approach aims to cultivate educators deeply rooted in the community they serve.
A Seamless Pathway to Higher Education
The structure of the partnership ensures a smooth transition for Tavares Teaching Academy graduates into higher education. The path leads them to Lake-Sumter State College, where they can earn an associate's degree that qualifies them for admission to UCF through the DirectConnect to UCF program. This program is designed to streamline the transfer process, ensuring that students can seamlessly continue their education at the university level. Watkins emphasizes the importance of cultivating local talent, stating, "We want to grow the teachers who know about the culture and community in Lake County."
Collaborative Learning and Mentorship Opportunities
A key component of this initiative involves fostering connections between high school and college students through collaborative events and mentoring programs. These interactions provide invaluable opportunities for aspiring educators to learn from experienced students and faculty. Recently, the groups convened at UCF Connect South Lake Center in Clermont to commemorate International Dot Day, a celebration of the works of children’s author Peter H. Reynolds. During this event, thirty-five UCF students collaborated with 17 Teaching Academy students across six educational stations. These stations were designed to reinforce the pedagogical methods that the high school students will eventually employ to teach children to read.

Bridging Research and Practice
Kay emphasizes the importance of translating academic research into practical application, stating, "It’s so important to connect the research into action." The collaborative events provide a platform for students to bridge the gap between theory and practice, gaining firsthand experience in implementing effective teaching strategies. Luke echoes this sentiment, noting, "These students will have a head start because they will have already spent time in front of a class."
Student Perspectives: Passion and Role Models
The impact of the partnership is evident in the experiences of the students involved. Ashley Ellixson, a Tavares High School junior, shares, "I enjoyed the opportunity to work with students who have the same passion as me, but are also role models since they’re older." Similarly, Kira Dowling, a UCF junior, states, "I feel like a role model, trying to help the high schoolers understand what the expectations of being an elementary education student are at UCF." These testimonials highlight the value of peer mentorship and the sense of community fostered by the program.
