UCF Versus Florida: A Budding Sunshine State Football Rivalry
As UCF embarks on its journey as the youngest member of a Power 5 conference, it's an opportune moment to reflect on the program's history and the rivalries that have shaped its identity. While the Knights and the Florida Gators haven't engaged in a storied series, the seeds of a potential rivalry have been sown, marked by sporadic encounters and a future schedule that promises more frequent clashes.
Defining a Rivalry: More Than Just Geography
What constitutes a true rivalry? Is it simply proximity, shared history, or a consistent competitive balance? For UCF, the answer lies in a combination of factors that have evolved alongside the program's growth. In the early years, rivalries were often dictated by geography and conference affiliation. Now, as UCF steps onto a larger stage, new rivalries are poised to emerge, fueled by heightened competition and national exposure.
Early Years: Finding Foes in Familiar Faces
UCF's athletic journey began in 1971 with a baseball game between Florida Tech Knights of the Pegasus and the South Florida Golden Brahmans. As the football program took shape, early rivalries were forged with teams like Stetson in basketball and baseball, thanks to the schools' close proximity.
"As UCF went through its Division II and I-AA years, people talked about Bethune-Cookman as a rival because of the geographics," recalls longtime UCF radio voice Marc Daniels. DeSalvo adds, "And in those really early years Valdosta State (eight games from 1982-94) was a rival for us - and Georgia Southern (11 games from 1982-91). Those were the better programs we were challenging back then."
These matchups provided valuable experience and helped establish UCF's presence in the college sports landscape.

The Rise of UCF: A Target on Their Back
Even in its early years, UCF faced intense competition from opponents eager to claim victory over the up-and-coming program. "Everybody wanted to beat UCF," DeSalvo notes. "We seemed to have a big target on our back. Maybe it was partly because we were a big school from a big city." This underdog status fueled the Knights' determination and contributed to the development of a competitive spirit.
Marshall: The First "Big" Rivalry
Marc Daniels identifies Marshall as UCF's first significant rivalry, stemming from their transition from independent status to the Mid-American Conference (MAC). "In my mind, Marshall was the first big rivalry because of how it happened," he explains.
The inaugural game in 2002 saw Marshall, led by quarterback Byron Leftwich, defeat UCF 26-21. Despite the loss, UCF, with quarterback Ryan Schneider playing through an injury, earned respect for their resilience. This game marked the beginning of a series that would see UCF eventually dominate after initially being controlled by Marshall. The two teams even met in the Gasparilla Bowl after the 2019 season, reigniting memories of their hard-fought contests.
Memphis: A Multi-Sport Battleground
The rivalry with Memphis extended across multiple sports, adding another layer of intensity to the matchups. In men's basketball, Keith Clanton led UCF to its first win over Memphis in 2012, sparking a court-storming celebration. The women's soccer teams consistently battled for the top spot in the C-USA standings, with UCF securing a conference tournament title in 2012 by shutting out Memphis.
In football, UCF dominated the series after an initial loss in 1990, winning 13 straight games. Memorable moments include a game-winning forced fumble in 2013 and a double-overtime victory in the 2017 conference title game, a contest that showcased record-breaking offensive performances. The following year, UCF overcame a 16-point deficit on the road to secure another thrilling win.
