Understanding UCI Graduate Tuition Fees

Navigating the financial landscape of graduate education can be daunting. This article provides a detailed overview of University of California, Irvine (UCI) graduate tuition fees, associated costs, and important considerations for prospective and current students. The figures provided are estimates based on currently approved amounts and are subject to change by the Regents of the University of California. Factors such as adjustments in state funding or other developments can influence the final amounts.

Tuition and Fees Structure

UCI's tuition and fees consist of several components, including tuition, student services fees, and campus-based fees. These fees support various aspects of university life, from academic instruction and student services to recreational facilities and campus events.

Understanding the Fees

  • Tuition: This is a mandatory UC systemwide charge that provides general support for the University’s operating budget, including instruction costs and student financial aid. Graduate students studying out of state may be eligible to pay 15 percent of tuition. M.D. students are required to pay the full tuition for each quarter in which they enroll, including the summer quarter.

  • Student Services Fee: This mandatory UC systemwide fee covers co-curricular programs, activities, and services that benefit students and complement instructional programs. Like tuition, a portion of this fee supports student financial aid, and graduate students studying out of state may be eligible for a reduced rate.

  • Associated Students Fees: These compulsory campus-based fees are managed by the Associated Students of UCI (ASUCI) and the Associated Graduate Students (AGS). They fund social activities, lectures, forums, concerts, and other events for UCI students.

  • UCI Student Center Fee: This fee supports the UCI Student Center by covering debt service on revenue bonds, operating costs, and major repairs and maintenance.

  • Student Center Continuation Fee: This fee ensures the maintenance of current service levels, daily operating expenses, and continuous facility maintenance and improvements to the Student Center.

  • Bren Events Center Fee: This fee supports the operations, maintenance, and repair of the Bren Events Center, including debt service on construction bonds.

  • Recreation Center Fee: This fee supports the operation and maintenance of the Student Recreation Center and Athletics facilities improvements, as well as debt service on related construction bonds.

  • Basic Needs Center Fee (GR. Students): Effective for fall 2025, UC Irvine will implement a Basic Needs Center Services fee of $7 per graduate student per quarter ($21 annually). This fee supports emergency services for graduate students, including operation of the campus food pantry, emergency housing assistance, and direct financial support for essential needs.

  • eTech Fee: This nonrefundable per-unit fee supports the UC Irvine Educational Technology Initiative, maintaining and improving existing educational technology and providing new services.

  • Document Fee: A one-time fee that provides lifetime access to official transcripts and academic verifications without additional fees for standard delivery methods.

  • Graduate Student Health Insurance Plan Fee (GSHIP): This mandatory fee provides 12-month health insurance coverage. Students with comparable coverage may be eligible for a waiver.

  • Nonresident Supplemental Tuition: This is an additional charge for students who are not California residents.

Additional Expenses to Consider

Beyond tuition and fees, graduate students should also budget for other expenses, including:

  • Books and Supplies: The cost of books and supplies can vary depending on the program of study.
  • Room and Board: Housing costs depend on whether you live on or off campus. On-campus housing can include residence halls or apartments. Off-campus options include apartments or houses, which may be more affordable if shared with roommates.
  • Miscellaneous Expenses: These include personal expenses, transportation, and other costs.

The range of estimated nine-month expenses, including projected tuition, fees, books and supplies, room and board, and miscellaneous expenses for California-resident students attending UCI during the 2024-25 academic year are detailed in a chart provided by UCI. Graduate student expenses assume two students sharing a two-bedroom apartment. All other on- and off-campus estimates are based on two students sharing a bedroom. Figures are based on periodic surveys and are adjusted for inflation for years when surveys are not conducted. These are intended only as a guide in computing average expenses.

Important Considerations

  • Fee Changes: Tuition, fees, and charges are subject to change by the Regents of the University of California. The figures provided are estimates and may not be final.
  • Method of Instruction: Tuition and mandatory fees have been set regardless of the method of instruction and will not be refunded in the event instruction occurs remotely for any part of the Academic Year.
  • Tuition Stability Plan: While the Tuition Stability Plan primarily affects undergraduate students, it's important to be aware of this initiative, as it provides predictability in tuition costs for incoming undergraduate classes.
  • Program-Specific Costs: The exact cost of attending UCI varies by program. Students in state-supported professional programs and self-supporting professional programs have different fee structures.
  • Payment and Registration: A student will not be officially registered in classes until tuition and fees are paid in full, with the exception of students who are participating in the PACE Plan. Continuing and returning students are required to pay all outstanding fines and other debts in full before they pay their tuition and fees for an upcoming term.
  • Tuition and Fee Refunds: Information about tuition and fee refunds appears later in this section.

Estimating Costs for Extramural Proposal Budgets

When estimating costs for multi-year projects for extramural proposal budgets, it is important to escalate tuition and nonresident supplemental tuition appropriately:

  • Escalate Tuition (formally Educational Fees) by six percent (6%) per year when estimating costs for multi-year projects for all Graduate Students, regardless of Residency or Nonresidency.
  • Escalate Nonresident Supplemental Tuition by seven percent (7%) per year when estimating costs for multi-year projects for Graduate Students that are Nonresidents.

OP policy provides for a one-hundred percent (100%) reduction in nonresident supplemental tuition for eligible doctoral students for the three years following advancement to candidacy.

Facilities and Administrative Costs (indirect costs) are not assessed on graduate student fee and tuition remission when using the modified total direct cost base described in UCI's Rate Agreement with the Department of Health and Human Services.

For NIH-funded projects, graduate student compensation (salary, benefits, fees, tuition remission, and graduate student health insurance) is capped at the 0 year postdoctoral level set for the NRSA trainee.
