Navigating the UCLA Arthur Ashe Student Health & Wellness Center: A Comprehensive Guide

The Arthur Ashe Student Health and Wellness Center (The Ashe Center) is a crucial resource for all UCLA students, dedicated to providing accessible, high-quality healthcare and education. Located in the heart of the UCLA campus, it functions as an appointment-based, ambulatory health clinic, catering specifically to the unique needs of the student population. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of the services, resources, and procedures available at The Ashe Center, ensuring students can effectively navigate their healthcare journey at UCLA.

Accessing Your Health Records and Communicating with Your Care Team: MyStudentChart

The Ashe Center leverages technology to enhance the patient experience. MyStudentChart serves as a central hub for managing your health records, communicating with your care team, and actively participating in your healthcare. It provides a convenient and secure platform to access medical information and connect with healthcare providers. For records prior to July 7, 2025, the PNC Patient Portal remains accessible in view-only mode.

Staying Healthy: Immunizations and Preventative Measures

The Ashe Center prioritizes preventative care, offering essential vaccines and resources to protect students from common illnesses. The 2025-26 Influenza vaccine and updated COVID-19 vaccine are currently available at The Ashe Center. It is important to stay informed about recommended vaccinations and take advantage of these services to maintain your health.

Addressing the Opioid Crisis: The UCLA Narcan Distribution Project

Recognizing the importance of addressing the opioid epidemic, the UCLA Narcan Distribution Project provides students and staff with free access to Narcan (naloxone), a life-saving medication used to treat opioid overdoses. By providing access to Narcan, the project aims to save lives and reduce the stigma surrounding substance use disorders. Narcan quickly reverses the effects of an opioid overdose, restoring normal breathing, and potentially saving the person's life.

Understanding UCSHIP: Your Student Health Insurance Plan

The UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UCSHIP) is a systemwide health insurance plan that provides enhanced benefits to all enrolled UCLA students. It ensures that students have access to comprehensive medical, prescription, counseling, vision, and dental benefits.

Providing Feedback on Your Patient Experience

The Ashe Center values student feedback and strives to improve the patient experience. Students are encouraged to share their thoughts and suggestions to help the center better meet their needs.

Asynchronous Telemedicine (E-Visits): Healthcare on Your Schedule

The Ashe Center embraces modern healthcare practices by offering asynchronous telemedicine, also known as E-Visits. This innovative approach allows patients to interact with healthcare providers without needing real-time communication.

Example of an E-Visit Scenario:

  1. Emily's Sore Throat: Emily, a sophomore, experiences a sore throat and uses MyStudentChart to describe her symptoms and upload photos.
  2. Submitting Information: Emily uses the portal to upload photos and describe her symptoms.
  3. Diagnosis and Recommendations: Emily's PCP reviews the information and provides a diagnosis of mild pharyngitis, along with recommendations for rest, fluids, and throat lozenges.
  4. Relief and Convenience: Emily is relieved by the quick and straightforward process, appreciating the convenience of asynchronous care.

UCSHIP Coverage Details

Health Insurance is mandatory for all UCLA registered students as a condition of enrollment. UCSHIP is a comprehensive major medical insurance plan, providing medical, prescription, counseling, vision, and dental benefits.

Physical Health Services with UCSHIP

Students with UCSHIP are expected to seek all non-emergency care at The Ashe Center and can be referred (as needed) to other network providers by their Ashe Center primary care provider (PCP). An Ashe Center referral is required for all non-emergent treatment in advance of care. The Ashe Center does not offer walk-in appointments, though same-day appointments may be available each day based on availability. If you need a same-day appointment, call The Ashe Center scheduling line (310-825-4073) when The Ashe Center opens each day. If no appointments are available, refer to The Ashe Center AfterHours & Immediate Care resource guide for other local options for accessing care. Students should only visit the emergency room for emergency care.

Counseling Services with UCSHIP

For all counseling and psychological services, students must start their care at UCLA CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services). A referral must be administered by a CAPS provider for additional behavioral health treatment and services outside of CAPS.

Dependent Coverage

Summaries of medical benefits and pharmacy benefits for dependents are available for review.
