Discover the Art of Leverage: Exploring the UCLA Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Club
The UCLA Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) Club offers a transformative way to stay active while learning valuable life skills. Rooted in leverage and technique, BJJ distinguishes itself from other forms of martial arts through attacks initiated while the fighter is on his or her back. It's a perfect choice for people of all shapes, sizes, and fitness levels. Whether you're a seasoned athlete or someone who's never set foot on a mat, BJJ welcomes everyone with open arms.
What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant using joint-locks and chokeholds. As one member, Martin, explained, “Jiujitsu is like human chess.”
A Welcoming Environment for All
One of the unique aspects of BJJ is its accessibility for beginners. At the UCLA BJJ Club, they pride themselves on fostering a friendly, inclusive environment where you can learn at your own pace. The atmosphere is filled with the emphatic thuds of bodies on the floor and the sound of bare feet sliding on the padded mats. Members tap their opponents’ arms to signal they want to stop fighting, grasping their opponents’ shoulders in a position that locks their partners’ arm movement before hurling them to the floor.
The club also welcomes individuals with unique physical challenges. For example, one member, Shevtsov, has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair due to a balance impairment. Shevtsov practices jiujitsu moves and positions that rely less on balance. After a personal event, Shevtsov started to look for something physical and fun that had the same strategy of thinking with your body.
Self-Defense and Practical Application
One of the most exciting aspects of BJJ is its practical application in self-defense. Unlike many sports, BJJ teaches you techniques that can be used effectively in real-world situations, empowering you with the confidence to protect yourself if needed. Martin demonstrated the strategic benefit of placing hands in front of the face in order to shield oneself from attacks.

Fitness and Fun
BJJ is more than just self-defense; it's also an exhilarating way to stay fit. Training combines cardio, strength, flexibility, and mental focus in a dynamic and engaging way. Forget monotonous workouts-every session on the mat is a fresh challenge, keeping you motivated and eager to improve.
From mastering your first technique to rolling (sparring) with your teammates, BJJ offers countless moments of accomplishment and joy.
Technical Roll Class
The UCLA BJJ Club offers a Technical Roll class, an opportunity to take your BJJ game to the next level. This is a chance for instructors to provide strategy and tactics to common situations you find yourself in during rolling and gives you an opportunity to implement techniques taught in the instructional classes. They will give live feedback and propose methods to be more successful in guard retention, escaping bad positions, finishing submissions and ensuring dominant positions throughout the roll.
