UCLA Laptop Grant Requirements: A Comprehensive Guide

For students at UCLA striving for academic excellence, access to technology like laptops is often essential. Recognizing this need, UCLA offers various forms of financial aid and support to help students acquire the necessary tools. This guide provides a detailed overview of UCLA's laptop grant requirements, financial aid updates, and other relevant information for students seeking assistance.

Important Financial Aid Updates (2025-2026 Academic Year)

Before diving into laptop-specific grants, it's crucial to be aware of general financial aid updates that may affect your eligibility and application process. As of Fall 2025, several important changes and notices have been issued by UCLA Financial Aid & Scholarships:

  • Bruin Financial Aid System Issues: In Fall 2025, the Bruin Financial Aid system encountered unforeseen issues that resulted in award adjustments. While some adjustments were incorrect and being resolved, students were advised to bear with the system and allow time for corrections.

  • Summer Billing: Students enrolled in the FSP/TSP Summer Program or those entering UCLA who attended summer school may have noticed a bill as of October 9, 2025, for aid received in the summer. This was due to summer aid for newly admitted students being canceled in error, and the financial aid office was working to re-award the canceled aid.

  • Fall Billing: Undergraduate students admitted before 25F had their cost of attendance and awards revised incorrectly. Any additional increase to the Fall University Grant or Loan in the range of $166 - 788 was to be canceled.

  • Middle Class Scholarship (MCS): The California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) began determining Middle Class Scholarship (MCS) eligibility and notifying potentially eligible students starting September 2, 2025. Over 11,000 UCLA students were anticipated to be eligible for MCS.

  • Cal Grant and Anticipated Aid Status: Anticipated aid for the Fall Quarter began to show on student’s BruinBill starting August 21, 2025. Cal Grant awards in ‘Estimated’ status will not reflect as anticipated aid until a student's eligibility has been confirmed.

  • 2025-26 FAFSA Update: The Department of Education updated Question 11 on the 2025-26 FAFSA, offering only two response options for gender: “Male” and “Female.”

  • 2025-26 Interest Rates for Federal Direct Loans: The interest rate for Federal Direct Loans is determined annually for all loans first disbursed during any 12-month period starting on July 1 and ending on June 30.

  • Summer 2025 Financial Aid Guidance: Students considering attending Summer 2025 classes can estimate their costs and financial aid eligibility using the 2025 UCLA Summer Financial Aid Calculator.

  • Aid Application Process for 25-26: While the UCLA Priority Filing deadline of April 2, 2025, has passed, students can still apply for 25-26 aid using UCLA School Code 001315.

  • Fall 2025 Financial Aid Census: UCLA Financial Aid and Scholarships conducted the Fall 2025 census on October 17, 2025, to ensure financial aid recipients were enrolled full time (12 units or more) unless otherwise approved for the Fee Reduced Program.

Bruin Tech Fund: Bridging the Digital Divide

The Bruin Tech Fund specifically addresses the technology needs of financially vulnerable students. Established in March 2020, the fund provides awards (not loans) to students who need to acquire technology, such as up-to-date computers or Wi-Fi, to excel in their courses in a remote learning environment. The funds are distributed through UCLA’s financial aid office, ensuring that students have the same access to technology they traditionally get from campus computer labs and services.

The Bruin Tech Fund was initiated by Patricia A. Turner, Senior Dean of UCLA College and Dean and Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education, during UCLA’s transition to remote instruction due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A crowdfunding campaign raised $200,000 in just a few weeks, with contributions from various campus leaders.

Requesting a Budget Adjustment for Computer Purchases

Beyond specific grant programs, UCLA students can also request an increase or adjustment to their financial aid budget to cover additional expenses, including computer purchases.

Eligibility and Requirements

  • A computer purchase (desktop, laptop, or tablet) is allowed only once during a student's enrollment per degree at UCLA.
  • Computer-related expenses, including insurance and basic software like Microsoft Office, can also be considered.
  • The maximum amount considered for a computer purchase is $2,000.

Expected Aid

Students who are approved for a budget adjustment for a computer purchase will typically be offered additional loans to cover the expense.

Documentation

To request a budget adjustment for a computer purchase, students must submit a copy of the receipt verifying proof of purchase. The receipt must be in the student's name, or credit cards may be used to verify purchases. If the computer was purchased by a parent, a statement from the parent indicating that the aid will be used to reimburse them for the cost of the computer is required.

How to Request a Budget Adjustment

Requests to increase the financial aid budget are submitted via the Bruin Financial Aid Portal (BFA).

  1. Log in to the Bruin Financial Aid Portal.
  2. Select "Documents."
  3. Select "upload a non-requested document."
  4. From "Document Name," select "Appeal: Budget Increase Form" and select the owner (student) and the award year.
  5. Provide information in "Enter Document Data" fields.
  6. Use the "Add an Additional Document" button to attach the required supporting documentation (requests will not be processed without supporting documentation).

Additional Allowable Expenses for Budget Adjustments

In addition to computer purchases, students can request budget adjustments for other allowable expenses, which may indirectly free up funds for technology needs. These include:

  • Child Care: Parenting students are eligible to add the out-of-pocket cost for childcare expenses. Private school tuition is not covered. If federal student loans are maximized, a small grant may be awarded based on eligibility.
  • Travel Expenses: Students can request funds to cover the cost of travel to visit family for the holidays or family emergencies. UCLA can consider up to four roundtrip travel expenses, such as airfare, bus, train, and car rental.
  • Medical /Dental Expenses: Expenses incurred and paid out of pocket (not covered by insurance) for the student during the enrollment period will be considered.
  • Special Projects: Expenses incurred for special projects must be part of the student's required coursework.
  • Licenses and Certificates: Students can request an allowance for one-time direct costs associated with obtaining their first professional license or certificate, provided they are enrolled in a program that requires such licensure or certification.
  • Rent Expenses, or change to Housing Status: If a student's actual rent/mortgage, or UCLA Housing expense exceed UCLA's monthly standard, they can increase their attendance cost by the difference over their academic year enrollment period.

Financial Aid for Graduate Students

For graduate students, financial support at UCLA is provided in the form of grants, awards, traineeships, teaching assistantships, and graduate student researcher appointments. A student may receive both a departmental or Division of Graduate Education award in addition to an award based solely on financial need if the need-based criteria are met. Each eligible new doctoral student is provided up to $1,000 total reimbursement that can be used, in whole or in part, at any time through the student’s seventh year in the doctoral program, as long as the student and the activities meet the eligibility requirements. Merit-based awards provide stipends in varying amounts and may include tuition and nonresident supplemental tuition. Teaching Assistantships provide experience in teaching undergraduates under faculty supervision.

External Grant Suspensions and Legal Challenges

It's important to note that UCLA, like other universities, sometimes faces challenges related to grant funding from external organizations. In the past, there have been instances where grants were suspended or terminated due to alleged violations of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies or other concerns. These situations can indirectly affect the availability of funds for various programs, including those that support student technology needs.

In one instance, a California district court judge, Rita F. Lin, addressed the National Science Foundation's decision to suspend UCLA’s grants. The judge's order was a response to a filing from lawyers representing University of California researchers, who argued that the science foundation must undo the suspensions. This case highlighted the ongoing legal challenges related to university research funding and DEI policies.
