Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, the Pilates method focuses on controlled movements, core strength, flexibility, and body awareness. Reformer Pilates offers a challenging yet adaptable workout suitable for individuals of all ages and fitness levels.

- Concentration: Maintaining focus and awareness throughout each exercise.
- Control: Executing movements with precision and control to maximize effectiveness and minimize risk of injury.
- Precision: Paying attention to proper form and alignment in every exercise.
- Fluidity: Moving with grace and ease, connecting one exercise to the next.

Study Design and Methodology
The study employed a one-group pretest-posttest experimental design. The sample consisted of 22 desk-based office workers (14 females, 8 males) selected through convenience sampling. Participants completed 60-minute Reformer Pilates sessions twice a week for eight weeks. Postural alignment, body appreciation, and social appearance anxiety were assessed using standardized measurement tools.
Key Findings
The study revealed significant improvements in postural alignment, body appreciation, and social appearance anxiety among the participants after the eight-week Reformer Pilates program.
- Postural Alignment: Participants experienced a substantial improvement in postural alignment, indicating that the Pilates intervention effectively corrected spinal misalignments.
- Body Appreciation: The Reformer Pilates program significantly increased body appreciation scores, suggesting that participants developed a more positive perception of their bodies.
- Social Appearance Anxiety: Participants experienced a significant decrease in social appearance anxiety, indicating that the Pilates intervention helped reduce concerns about their appearance in social contexts.
Implications of the Study
The findings of this study suggest that Reformer Pilates can be a valuable intervention for improving the physical and psychological well-being of sedentary office workers. By addressing postural misalignments, enhancing body appreciation, and reducing social appearance anxiety, Reformer Pilates can contribute to a healthier and more confident workforce.
Aerobic Pilates
Aerobic Pilates, developed by Barbara Wintroub, combines traditional Pilates exercises with cardio elements using the Reformer jumpboard. This workout builds speed and power through activation of the fast-twitch muscle fibers in the quadriceps. The Reformer jumpboard can be used for those with a variety of ailments, like osteoporosis, as this work-out is good for bone building. Clients with any type of knee and ankle issues will see tremendous improvement while working with the jumpboard, because the non-gravitational nature of jumping in the supine position means that less stress is placed on the joints. Basic exercises on the jumpboard include double leg and single leg jumping, running in place, jumping jacks and prancing. Music can be added for extra fun.
Pilates at UCLA
Pilates is offered at UCLA. My first exposure to Mat Pilates was during a "Kinesiology & Anatomy for Dancers" class while I was a dance major at UCLA. My love for Pilates grew even more while rehabbing a minor dance-related injury on the Pilates Reformer as a form of physical therapy.
