Discovering Sailing: A Beginner's Guide to UCLA Sailing Lessons
The allure of the open water, the feel of the wind in your sails, and the challenge of navigating a boat - sailing offers a unique blend of recreation and skill. For those in the UCLA community and the general public eager to embark on a sailing adventure, the UCLA Marina Aquatic Center (MAC) provides a comprehensive introduction to the sport. Located in Marina del Rey, just a short distance from the UCLA campus, the MAC offers a variety of sailing lessons designed for beginners, ensuring a safe, educational, and enjoyable experience.
The UCLA Marina Aquatic Center: A Waterfront Recreation Hub
The Marina Aquatic Center (MAC) stands as UCLA's premier waterfront recreation facility, a mere 10 miles from campus in the scenic Marina del Rey. Established in 1977, initially known as the “UCLA Boating and Safety Education Program,” the MAC was created through a grant from the California Department of Navigation and Ocean Development. Its primary mission was to provide boating safety and education to UCLA and the broader Southern California community.
Throughout its history, the MAC has expanded its offerings to include a wide range of water activities. In its early years, the center focused on instructional sailing and windsurfing programs. Over time, it incorporated recreational rowing, kayaking, and surfing. In 1994, the MAC broadened its reach by introducing youth boating programs, effectively exposing a new segment of the Southern California community to water and boating safety principles.
Today, the Marina Aquatic Center is a vibrant hub for waterfront recreation, providing equipment rentals and a diverse array of inclusive boating and safety programs encompassing sailing, rowing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding.
Getting Started with Sailing Lessons at UCLA
The MAC offers structured sailing lessons tailored for individuals with little to no prior experience. These courses provide a solid foundation in small boat sailing, taught by skilled, US Sailing-certified instructors.

Intro to Sailing - RS Quest
This introductory course is designed for the novice sailor. The entire class is conducted in a 14-foot monohull sailboat: the RS Quest. Participants will learn essential on-the-water skills, basic nautical knowledge, terminology, and right-of-way rules. Upon successful completion of this class, students become eligible to rent RS Quests from the MAC fleet and sail within the Marina’s Entrance Channel.
Singlehanded Sailing - Laser
For those who have completed the Intro to Sailing course and have gained some experience with RS Quest rentals (at least five rentals or skipper experiences), the Singlehanded Sailing - Laser course offers a progression to a more advanced racing dinghy: the Olympic Class Laser. This course allows sailors to experience the thrill of sailing solo with just one sail to manage.
Sailing Clinics
The MAC also offers a series of sailing clinics designed to enhance specific skills and techniques:
- Sailing Clinic Level A - First Sail: This clinic is ideal for those who have recently completed the Intro to Sailing class or who haven't been on the water in a while and need a refresher.
- Sailing Clinic Level B: This clinic builds upon the knowledge gained in the Intro to Sailing class and focuses on improving skills and teaching new techniques. Topics covered include sail trim, tiller extension, and boat handling. This clinic is designed to be repeatable.
- Sailing Clinic Level C: This advanced clinic requires a minimum of five rental experiences on the type of boat to be used and tiller extension qualification.
Youth Sailing
Youth sailors, ages 10-17, can also learn to sail through the Sailing Summer Camp, or limitedly available youth private lessons. The parent/guardian is wholly responsible for the equipment during the rental and agrees to follow all posted guidelines and staff requests.
Important Considerations Before You Begin
Before embarking on your sailing journey at the MAC, it's essential to be aware of certain requirements and guidelines:

Swim Requirement
All participants in sailing programs must be water-safe and able to meet a minimum swim requirement of swimming at least 100 yards and treading water for at least 5 minutes.
Course Materials
It's highly recommended to review the Learning to Sail Manual in advance to familiarize yourself with the topics that will be covered in the class. Bring any questions you may have to the instructor on the first day.
Physicality
Sailing courses require moderate fitness and physicality. Participants should be comfortable participating in long days of activity with some physical exertion. The ability to maneuver in boats, perform capsize recovery, and re-enter the vessel from the water are essential.
Attendance
Due to the progressive nature of the course curriculums, attendance of all course dates is critical to success in the course and is required for course completion.
What to Bring
- Packed lunch and personal snacks: The lunch break is limited, and there may not be time to go offsite.
- Lock: Backpack lockers do not have locks, so you will need to provide your own.
- Shoes: Close-toed shoes with light-colored, non-slip soles are required. Boat shoes, water shoes, or old tennis shoes work well.
- Clothing: Dress in athletic clothing that is comfortable and will dry quickly if it gets wet. Layers are recommended to adapt to changing weather conditions.
Safety Guidelines
- Sailors are required to wear Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) while on the dock and water at all times.
- Participants must be able to “self-rescue.” If unable to self-rescue, stay with the vessel and report the situation to MAC staff immediately.
- Report all collisions, injuries, and equipment damage to the MAC Staff.
- Renters will be responsible financially for equipment that is damaged beyond normal wear and tear.
Water Quality
Following significant rainfall, certain water activities shall cease for a minimum of 48 hours after the rain has stopped. All other activities will be allowed on the water after signing a water quality waiver.

Hypothermia Prevention
When sailing on Santa Monica Bay, sailors must be dressed appropriately to prevent hypothermia, which is a year-round concern. Wetsuits are mandatory when sailing on Santa Monica Bay from October to May and highly recommended for June through September. Additional spray protection (windbreaker etc.) is also recommended.
Beyond the Basics: Rental Opportunities and Continued Learning
After completing a sailing class at the MAC, you become eligible to rent boats from the MAC fleet during open rental hours. This provides an excellent opportunity to practice your skills and gain experience on the water. The MAC encourages students to rent and practice at least five times before signing up for a higher-level course.
The MAC also hosts various community events, friendly races, and other opportunities for sailors to connect and further develop their skills.
Other Programs Offered at the Marina Aquatic Center
In addition to sailing, the Marina Aquatic Center offers a variety of other water sport programs, including:
- Rowing: Learn the art of sculling in single and double sculls.
- Sea Kayaking: Explore the marina and Santa Monica Bay in sea kayaks.
- Stand Up Paddleboarding: Enjoy a fun and challenging workout on the water.
Private Instruction and Skills Evaluation Orientations
For those seeking individualized attention or wishing to demonstrate their existing skills, the MAC offers private instruction and Skills Evaluation Orientations (SEOs). Please note that requests may take up to 5 business days to process and scheduling is contingent upon instructor and facility availability.
