General Requirements for Undergraduate Admission
Applicants to the School must meet several criteria:
- GPA: A minimum 3.2 GPA is required at the time of application.
- Junior Standing: By the time of entrance, applicants must have attained junior standing, which is equivalent to 60 semester or 90 quarter units.
- General Education: Completion of general education coursework is mandatory. This can be fulfilled through the School’s General Education requirements, the IGETC at a California Community College, or the General Education requirements while a student at another UC campus.
- Foreign Language: While not mandatory, completion of the School of Theater, Film and Television’s foreign language requirement before arriving at UCLA is strongly encouraged.
Applying to the Theater Major

The Application Process for Undergraduates

Film, Television & Digital Media BA
The Film, Television & Digital Media BA at UCLA TFT trains rising filmmakers to grasp the historical and theoretical foundations of film while they develop industry-standard filmmaking skills. The undergraduate film program is open to freshmen and transfers; you do not need a film background to apply. Post-enrollment, undergraduates cannot switch to the Theater major. Instructors must approve enrollment in specialized courses.
Undergraduates learn the historical, critical, and theoretical foundations of the film industry. By junior year, the program shifts to developing craft skills and honing aesthetic prowess. In the final year of study, undergraduates concentrate in a specific area of interest and take a professional internship for credit.
Units Required
UCLA students must satisfactorily complete for credit a minimum of 180 units for the bachelor’s degree, which includes all University; School of Theater, Film and Television; and FTVDM department requirements. At least 64 of the 180 units must be upper-division courses numbered 100 through 199. A maximum of 216 units may be permitted. The Film and Television B.A. is a four-year degree, which includes seven Preparation for the Major courses and the Major courses. Transfer students will complete the preparatory courses (Film and Television 4, 6A, 10A, 33, 51, 84A and One Theater course) during their junior and senior years. Transfer students are expected to graduate within six (6) quarters (two years) and must complete all preparation for the major courses before graduation.

Film Minor
Undergraduates with a curiosity about the theoretical, political, economic, cultural, and artistic foundations of film can pursue the minor. The minor has seven upper and lower division courses that must be taken in residence at UCLA, including the summer quarter. At least 20 units must be exclusive to the minor.

Ph.D. Application Requirements
Applicants to the Ph.D. program must submit the following:

- Personal Statement: The Personal Statement is an opportunity for you to provide additional information that may aid the selection committee in evaluating your preparation and aptitude for graduate study at UCLA. It will also be used to consider candidates for the Cota-Robles and Graduate Opportunity fellowships. Address the following questions:
- Are there any educational, personal, cultural, economic, or social experiences not described in your Statement of Purpose that have shaped your academic journey? If so, how?
- Describe challenge(s) or barriers that you have faced in your pursuit of higher education. What motivated you to persist, and how did you overcome them?
- Letters of Recommendation: Upload 3 letters of recommendation from professional and academic sources. Letters of recommendation can be repurposed once if you are renewing your application.
- Transcripts: Upload copies of your unofficial transcripts under “Academic History & Transcripts,” and provide official copies of all transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended - postmarked before or on the program deadline.
- Fellowship Application: Complete the optional fellowship application to be considered for UCLA merit-based awards only in the Department of Film, Media and Television.
Fellowship Opportunities
Several fellowship opportunities are available for graduate students in the Department of Film, Media and Television:
- Rose and Sam Glibert Award: For graduate students who attended UCLA as undergraduates for at least two years and participated on men’s or women’s NCAA athletic teams (club and intramural teams are not eligible).
