Unlocking Opportunities: A Comprehensive Guide to the UCSD Regents Scholarship
The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) stands as the southernmost campus in the University of California system. It attracts a diverse range of students, from first-time college entrants to transfer students. Among the opportunities available at UCSD, the Regents Scholarship stands out as a prestigious award, and this article delves into the requirements, eligibility criteria, and benefits associated with this scholarship.
Understanding the UCSD Regents Scholarship
The Regents Scholarship represents a significant opportunity for undergraduate students at the University of California. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence, this merit scholarship provides financial assistance and a number of scholarship-specific privileges to its recipients. All incoming students are automatically considered for a UC Regents’ Scholarship and need not submit any additional information or applications.
Financial Award
Every year, many incoming Tritons are selected for the Regents Scholarship, a $20,000 award paid out at $5,000 per year for each of the recipients’ 4 undergraduate years (or 2 years for transfer students). Entering students who haven't demonstrated financial need receive $5,000 a year. Freshmen get this for four years, transfers for two. California residents with financial need will receive more. If a Regents' Scholar has additional financial need beyond the $7,000 honorarium, the scholar will be awarded the maximum amount of university scholarships and/or grants to cover the remainder of the scholar’s in-state need. The Regents' Scholarship need-based award is determined annually and is designed to supplement all federal and state awards as well as other outside scholarship awards.
Priority Enrollment
Regents Scholars benefit from priority enrollment, ensuring they have access to the classes they need to progress toward their degrees. Priority begins the first Winter Quarter and continues for future undergraduate enrollment. The first Fall Quarter enrollment occurs during the normal Freshman enrollment period around August -September. UC San Diego announces enrollment appointment dates and times for the next quarter on Friday of Week 5 of the current quarter. During the first pass, students may only enroll in 11.5 units within a specified timeframe. During the second pass, students may enroll in up to 19.5 units, including waitlisted courses.
Regents Scholars Research Initiative (RSRI) program
Participation in a cutting-edge research program during the first quarter of enrollment, subject to availability. While the Regents Scholarship program is a UC systemwide program, the Regents Scholars Research Initiative (RSRI) program is unique to UC San Diego.
