The first step in seeking financial aid is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This application determines your eligibility for federal loans, grants, and institutional aid. Available through the federal government, there are PELL grants which are funds that do not have to be repaid (free money). Available through the federal government, student and parent loans are a viable option for students after all other free aid has been received. You must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid annually to enure you are being considered for all the aid for which you are eligible. When taking out federal loans, either the student, the parent, or both will have to sign a Master Promissory Note (MPN) and complete Loan Entrance Counseling (LEC). Completing the FAFSA also helps determine your Estimated Family Contribution (EFC), which is used to assess the amount you or your family can reasonably be expected to pay for school.
Grants: Needs-Based Financial Assistance
Grants are another valuable form of financial aid that, like scholarships, do not need to be repaid. They are typically needs-based, meaning eligibility is determined by your financial situation. For example, the federal Pell Grant requires proof of financial need through the FAFSA. Many states also offer grant programs to support students pursuing higher education. SDMS Foundation Sonography Student Scholarship Program
This annual award is given to one or more sonography students who are SDMS members and enrolled in a school accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). This program provides a $2,500 scholarship to a sonography student who has been accepted or is currently enrolled in an educational program in diagnostic medical sonography or cardiovascular technology that has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Educational Programs (CAAHEP). Two (2) sonography student scholarships will be awarded each year. Scholarships can be used for tuition, books, or educational fees.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Current SDMS member in good standing (Corporate/Business/Institution and Supporting members are not eligible).
- Accepted or enrolled in CAAHEP accredited sonography educational program.
- Demonstrate need by fully completing the SDMS Foundation Sonography Student Scholarship Program Application, including required essay (see Essay Guidelines) and signature(s), before the application deadline.
SDMS Foundation Advanced Degree Scholarship Program
This award is designed for experienced sonographers pursuing a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate in a sonography-related field. This program is limited to SDMS members. Applicants need at least two years of full-time sonographer experience and must submit essay questions and a FAFSA form as part of the application process.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Current SDMS member in good standing (Corporate/Business/Institution and Supporting members are not eligible).
- Accepted or enrolled in accredited educational program.
- At least two (2) years full-time experience as a sonographer.
- Demonstrate need by fully completing the SDMS Foundation Sonographer Advanced Degree Scholarship Program Application, including required essay (see Essay Guidelines), Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Report and signature(s), before the application deadline.
Alan D. Waggoner Sonographer Student Scholarship
This award is given to one full-time student actively enrolled in an accredited sonography program. Applicants must submit two professional letters of recommendation, a 500-word essay and information about their financial need, among other qualifications. Applicants must attend accredited ultrasound schools. This scholarship awards one full-time student $1,000, plus complimentary registration and travel support for ASE’s Annual Scientific Sessions.
BB Imaging Sonography Student Scholarship
Future sonographers can apply for the BB Imaging sonography student scholarship. Applicants must be accepted to or enrolled in an accredited sonography program. The application requires long-form answers to questions about your career choice and goals. BB Imaging awards the scholarship twice a year in spring and fall.
Anne Jones Educational Scholarships
Offered by the Society for Vascular Ultrasound, the Anne Jones Educational Scholarship supports students in vascular ultrasound technology programs. In addition to the $2,500 grand prize, the scholarship awards three $1,000 prizes. Applicants must be enrolled in a CAAHEP-accredited program with a minimum 3.5 GPA. Four scholarships totaling $5,500 are awarded each year in honor of Anne Jones, former Chair of SVU’s Government Relations. Recipients are students who are pursuing a career in vascular ultrasound.

Steven A. Baker Memorial Scholarship
If you’re attending a certificate or degree-granting program in sonography at a CAAHEP-accredited program, you can apply for the Steven A. Baker Memorial Scholarship. Applicants must meet minimum GPA requirements that depend on their degree level. The application also requires an essay on the personal traits and life experiences that prepare you to succeed as a sonographer.
Essay Focus:
The essay topic is all about your personal experience and your own subjective thoughts and opinions. In 1,500 words or less, tell us about your experiences and how they may have helped you develop the kinds of traits that would make you exceptional at your job as a sonographer.
Allied Healthcare Scholarship Program
The purpose of the Allied Healthcare Scholarship Program is to increase the number of appropriately trained allied healthcare professionals, and to encourage their practice in direct patient care in medically underserved areas of California. Priority is given to students enrolled in the fields of medical imaging, occupational therapy, physical therapy, respiratory care, social work, pharmacy, pharmacy technician, medical laboratory technologist, surgical technician, ultrasound technician, and diagnostic medical sonography. Eligible applicants may receive up to $2,500 per year, and would have a service obligation of 1 year or 100-150 hours volunteer service. This program is funded by a contribution from Kaiser Permanente.
AAMD Founders Scholarships
The Founders Scholarship is named to honor those medical dosimetrists involved in founding the AAMD in 1975. Both medical dosimetry students selected for this award showed academic excellence and promise for the future. Each recipient was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
Radiology Consultants P.C. Scholarship
A resident of the greater Battle Creek area who is pursuing a career in radiography at Kellogg Community College, and has been accepted or enrolled in this program. Strong preference given to those who will commit at least one year of employment in the Battle Creek area. Financial need may be considered.

- Raymond Davis Scholarship: An applicant must be a graduate or undergraduate student who has completed or will complete two academic years of college before the term of the scholarship. The individual must be a full time student pursuing work at an accredited institution, toward the fulfillment of requirements for an degree.
- American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) Scholarships: The ASRT Foundation offers more than 70 scholarships to radiology students. This includes the Weber State University Department of Radiologic Sciences Student Global Engagement Scholarship and the Fellow Scholarship Grant.
- HOSA Scholarships: The Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) organization recognizes students who plan to continue their education in healthcare fields such as radiology.
