Financial Aid and Tuition Credits

UMass Chan Medical School offers various forms of financial aid and tuition credits to help students manage the cost of their education.

Federal Direct Loans

When determining the federal direct loan amount to borrow, students should consider the origination fee that the federal loan agency deducts upfront from the gross amount. This ensures that the net loan amount disbursed is sufficient to cover the bill. The Financial Aid Office typically disburses aid around the start of the semester. Disbursement dates are also impacted by federal direct loan regulation and the aid recipient's status of Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) provided by the school.

Tuition Credits

UMass Chan Medical School honors the following types of tuition credit:

  • Employment-related tuition credit for eligible UMass employees and their eligible spouse/dependent. (The MD program at T.H.)
  • Employment-related tuition credit for eligible MA State employees and their eligible spouse/dependent (The MD program at T.H.)
  • Need-based tuition credit for T.H.

Learning Contract (T.H. Chan School of Medicine)

Since 1978, the T.H. Chan School of Medicine has offered matriculated students a Learning Contract, regardless of whether they applied for other types of financial aid. This contract defers payment of $5,568 of tuition.

Veteran Affairs (VA) Educational Benefits

Students who are eligible and certified to receive Veteran Affairs (“VA”) educational benefits (defined as Vocational Rehabilitation benefits (Chapter 31) or the Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits Chapter 33) are exempt from the policy pertaining to past-due accounts.

Refund Policy

UMass Chan Medical School has a specific refund policy for students who withdraw from their programs. The complete refund policy can be accessed online.

General Refund Policy

Students who cease enrollment after 60 percent of the term has elapsed receive no refund and are not required to refund any federal aid received for the term. Students who cease enrollment before 60 percent of the term has elapsed receive a refund for the percentage of the term remaining after the last date of attendance. The percentage is calculated by dividing the number of calendar days elapsed between the beginning of the term and the date the individual ceases enrollment by the number of calendar days in the term. A share of the refund will be returned to the financial aid programs that funded students.

Students must notify the dean of their respective school and the Registrar in writing of their intent to withdraw. Upon request, the School Bursar will provide examples of the application of this policy.

Direct Deposit for Stipends

Students of Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and PhD/MD students are required to set up Direct Deposit for receiving their bi-weekly stipends from HR. This Direct Deposit is different from the one required for tuition payments.
