Discovering the Umbrella Learning Academy: Reviews and Unique Educational Approach

Umbrella Learning Academy (ULA) is a K-12 non-profit, private school located in Pensacola, Florida, committed to fostering a welcoming and supportive environment where every student feels valued, respected, and empowered to succeed. At ULA, the belief is in providing opportunities for all students to grow, learn, and thrive, recognizing the unique strengths and perspectives they bring to the community. Through respect, understanding, and collaboration, a school culture is created where every individual belongs and has the support they need to reach their full potential.

Personalized Learning Environment

ULA maintains a smaller student-to-teacher ratio to create a more personalized learning environment, addressing the limitations of overcrowded classrooms and the recognition that learning isn't "one-size-fits-all". Individualized learning plans are tailored to each student’s needs and include weekly assessments that provide a detailed breakdown of skills students have mastered as well as areas where they may need additional support. This data-driven approach ensures learning is intentional, measurable, and meaningful.

Family Partnership and Community Engagement

Family partnership is at the heart of ULA. Families are encouraged to get involved through volunteering and Family Board opportunities, whether behind the scenes or in the classroom. Through hands-on, mentor-led projects focused on STEM, healthy living, agriculture, and civic engagement, students develop leadership and life skills through the powerful philosophy of learning by doing.

ULA students actively participate with Escambia County 4-H, engaging in activities every Friday during club and elective times. Every student participates in activities with their age group on a regular basis with activities in STEM, Agriculture, Life Skills, and more! At the beginning of school, officers are elected to run once a month club meetings. In September and October, booths are created for the Pensacola Interstate Fair. In the past, the club earned money to help with fees for 4-H Day at the Capitol. During November, 4-H time is used to prepare for International Day. Each year, in the spring, students have the opportunity to travel to Tallahassee for a "Day at the Capitol" where they can explore the capitol buildings, museums, and learn about the state government.

Ron Clark Academy House System

To further strengthen the school culture, ULA has adopted the Ron Clark Academy House System, a positive behavioral framework that fosters belonging, character, and school spirit. Students are sorted into internationally recognized houses-Amistad, Altruismo, Isibindi, and Rêveur-and earn points for academics, character, and effort.

Summer Enrichment Program

Each year, ULA offers a Summer Enrichment Program. One summer program focused on Biology, with the aim to ignite students' passion for science and discovery through a variety of engaging activities, including experiments and nature expeditions. Another summer program was a 10-week adventure in Environmental Science, where learning goes beyond the classroom and into the world around us. Students explored Earth’s systems through hands-on experiments, green solution challenges, and weekly trips to nature preserves and local science centers. Interactive projects, team-building games, and creative outdoor fun were included every week.
