UNC Charlotte Freshman Dorms: A Comprehensive Guide to On-Campus and Off-Campus Living

Choosing the right housing option is one of the most important decisions for students at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC). Where you live can impact your academic success, social life, and overall college experience. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of housing options available to freshman students at UNC Charlotte, including on-campus residence halls and off-campus apartments.

On-Campus Housing: Residence Halls

UNCC offers a variety of residence halls that provide standard dorm rooms with shared spaces, communal bathrooms, and a structured living environment. Living on campus at UNC Charlotte is very popular and demand is high. This means we are likely to have more students interested in living on campus than we have space to accommodate them. To support the success of incoming students, we will prioritize applications from entering, first time in college (FTIC) students. If you know you want to live on campus, please apply early! A $100 non-refundable housing application processing fee is required and does not guarantee a housing assignment.

Benefits of On-Campus Living

  • Community: Residence halls are a great option for students who enjoy a built-in social network and want easy access to campus events and activities. Living in UNCC dorms means you’re just a short walk away from academic buildings, dining halls, and campus resources. UNCC on-campus housing makes it easy to form friendships and participate in student life.
  • Convenience: On-campus housing offers unparalleled convenience, with close proximity to classes, dining halls, the library, and other campus resources.
  • Structured Environment: Residence halls provide a structured living environment with Resident Advisors (RAs) who offer support and guidance to students.
  • Financial Aid: Housing costs can be bundled with tuition, and financial aid may cover on-campus housing expenses.

We assign as many first-year students as possible to first-year designated* residence halls in alignment with the University's student success goals. Many first-year students live in Levine Hall and designated first-year residence halls.

Specialized Living Options

  • Learning Communities: Some students choose to live in learning communities, which offer themed housing based on academic interests, career paths, or student organizations. These residential colleges help students build strong connections with peers who share similar goals. For residential programs, students are assigned to the appropriate building when the college or department sponsoring the Learning Community notifies us of the student's acceptance into the program. Sponsors work closely with us to coordinate specific roommate assignments. We are committed to providing a variety of educational opportunities that will contribute to the academic success of our students. These programs require a separate application in addition to the Housing Application and deposit. Assignment into this space is a coordinated effort with the Honors College.
  • Greek Village: Students involved in Greek organizations may have the opportunity to live in Greek Village, which provides fraternity and sorority housing close to campus. Greek Village is home to several sorority organizations. Each house has a chapter room and kitchen for common use and holds either 28 or 14 members. Common outdoor spaces serve as a centerpiece for the Greek Community, and include a sand volleyball court and picnic pavilion, creating a park-like setting for activities and events. Residence is reserved for members of the organization that is assigned to the house.
  • Gender-Affirming Housing: UNCC offers gender-affirming housing, ensuring students of all gender identities feel comfortable and supported in their living spaces.
  • Global Gateways Program: The Global Gateways Program, a residential-based programming model with an international emphasis, launched in Fall 2013 and expands upon our partnership with the Office of International Programs. Students in the Global Gateways program do not receive academic credit for participation in the program. However, each participant will receive a "Certificate of Completion" after they complete their stay with Global Gateways. Gateways residents will participate in organized social and educational experiences to increase intercultural competence and global awareness. Global Gateways is located in Witherspoon Hall. To apply to the Global Gateways program, you must complete the Global Gateways online application and the Housing Application. Selected community members will be notified of their acceptance and room assignment. Suites in Witherspoon Hall have two double-occupancy bedrooms, a bathroom, and a living room. A kitchen is available on the second floor, and laundry and vending facilities are available on the first floor. Apartments in Witherspoon Hall have four private bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room, a kitchen, a storage closet, and a balcony (on the second and third floors). All utilities are included. Laundry and vending facilities are available on the first floor.
  • Graduate Student Housing: One of the most important choices you can make during your graduate education is where you will live while pursuing your studies. Living on campus at UNC Charlotte is so much more than just a room in a building. It is a lifestyle with convenient access to academic and research resources, light rail, on-campus dining as well as student health and wellness services. Housing and Residence Life supports our graduate student residents by assigning interested students in an independent house in Greek Village with other graduate or post-traditional students (24+ years old). Important Dates

  • Spring Move-In: Move in for residents joining us for Spring 2026 is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 9 and Saturday, Jan. 10.

Move-In Tips

  • Find tips to make your move-in day as smooth as possible [here](URL to move-in tips).
  • Directions on campus and parking instructions vary by housing assignment.
  • Spring residents will check in at their assigned halls' front desk. Please enter campus via the entrance closest to your residence hall and park in a guest parking deck/lot (a parking map can be found [here](URL to parking map)).
  • Only two guests are permitted. You may bring a maximum of two guests to help you unload and carry your belongings. These two guests must remain the same all day- they cannot be swapped out for additional guests.
  • Bring your own moving equipment. We are unable to provide hand trucks or carts to assist your move.
  • Only pack what is essential. You can find our recommended packing list [here](URL to packing list).
  • Check out our Packing List, you can also download a printable version.
  • Review our prohibited items list.
  • Pack loose items into boxes or suitcases. Clothing can be packed in suitcases or left on hangers.
  • Label each box with your name, building, room number and cell phone number.
  • If possible, pack your TV, computer, and printer in the boxes that they came in.
  • Check with your roommate(s) when possible about who is bringing what (to avoid duplicates).
  • Be mindful of how many devices you plan to plug in. Circuit breakers for each room can only handle so much. Using too many appliances at once can trip them which will cut the power to your room until maintenance can reset it.
  • Upload your ID photo and set up your 49er Mobile ID. In order to access the residence hall, residents need to set up their 49er Mobile ID. Set up your mobile UNC Charlotte ID at least 1 business day before your arrival. If you haven’t yet, please follow the instructions [here](URL to mobile ID setup).
  • You will need to provide identification to pick up your key.

Roommate Conflict Resolution

To facilitate a respectful, friendly living environment, we encourage you to talk to your roommate and try to resolve problems between each other first. You can find tips on how to navigate tough conversations with your roommates [here](URL to roommate conflict tips). If roommates cannot resolve their conflict, residents are encouraged to inform their Resident Advisor, Graduate Hall Advisor or Residence Education Coordinator. The Resident Advisor (RA) lives in the area with the students, while the Residence Education Coordinator (REC) and/or Graduate Hall Advisor (GHA) supervises the building and staff. Students wishing to protect their belongings from the possibility of loss should obtain appropriate insurance coverage. Some residents may be covered under their parents' existing homeowner's or renter's policy.

Choosing off-campus housing gives you the privacy and space needed to succeed. Unlike dorms, off-campus apartments like Arcadia offer private bedrooms, larger living spaces, and modern amenities.
