Understanding UNC Graduate Tuition Costs
Embarking on a graduate program is a significant investment in your future. For those considering graduate studies within the University of North Carolina (UNC) system, understanding the nuances of tuition costs is crucial. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of UNC graduate tuition, covering various factors that influence the overall cost.
Navigating Your Grad School Journey
Planning for a graduate degree involves several key steps. UNC institutions offer virtual sessions with expert advice to help prospective students explore programs, prepare for admissions, and navigate their grad school journey. These sessions provide valuable insights into the application process and the resources available to graduate students.
Tuition and Fees Breakdown
Niner Central and similar resources at other UNC institutions offer detailed breakdowns of tuition and fees associated with graduate education. These resources provide clarity on the various costs involved, helping students budget effectively.
Residency Determination
Residency status plays a significant role in determining tuition costs. The Residency Determination Service (RDS) is the centralized system in North Carolina for determining residency for students. It is important to note that admissions teams are not responsible for making residency determinations. Students must apply for official residency determination through www.NCresidency.org in order to receive in-state tuition and State financial aid consideration. Those who aren’t eligible for classification as a North Carolina “resident for tuition purposes” will be charged out-of-state tuition and not be given consideration for State financial aid. Students can get more information about residency and complete a determination at www.NCresidency.org.
Tuition Structure
Tuition is assessed on a per credit hour basis at UNC institutions. For most graduate programs, tuition is capped at full-time enrollment, typically nine credit hours for graduate students. However, it's important to note that rates vary based on the academic program. To get an accurate estimate, prospective students can use the tuition estimator tools available on university websites.

The University Cashier charges tuition based on your academic program and residency status. Mandatory fees are those fees charged to all students. In addition, there are special fees charged for specific purposes that may not apply to all students. The North Carolina Legislature sets tuition rates. If you are determined to be a non-resident of North Carolina for tuition purposes, you will be charged the non-resident amount of tuition (also called the out-of-state rate). To view your student tuition bill and financial aid, log into ConnectCarolina. Click on “Account Inquiry” to see your bill and to make a payment. Staff who wish to view a student account, log into ConnectCarolina and navigate to the Student Admin Work Center. Your options will depend on your access.
Additional Costs
The cost of attending graduate school extends beyond tuition. It includes mandatory fees and health insurance. Each school and program has different tuition and fee charges. An additional Mandatory Health Insurance charge will be included on your account unless you waive out of the semester premium charge. * Students enrolled in the College of Engineering will be charged a COE Program Enhancement Fee. Graduates will be charged $83.33 per credit hour ($750.00 for full time 9+ hours). Auditing a course carries the same fee as if the course were taken for credit.
Financial Aid and Payment Options
UNC graduate students have access to various financial aid options, including scholarships, assistantships, and payment plans. The Office of Scholarships and Student Aid administers financial aid in the form of need-based loans or grants. Students are encouraged to explore these resources to find the solution that works best for them.
The Council of Graduate Schools has developed GradSense (Gradsense.org), a unique online education platform that provides students with financial information about a range of topics including the value of pursuing an advanced degree.
Recent Tuition Increases
The UNC Board of Governors recently allowed schools to increase tuition by up to 3% for in-state undergraduates, marking the first tuition increase in nearly a decade. While these hikes primarily affect incoming classes, it's important for prospective graduate students to stay informed about potential future changes.

Impact of Tuition Policies
The previous nine-year hold on tuition increases had a positive effect on UNC System graduates’ financial standing, with less than half of graduates having student loan debt in 2025, down from 62% in 2017. The amount of those loans also decreased by 35% between 2018 and 2025.
Comprehensive Cost of Attendance
The Cost of Attendance is an estimated budget of what a student may spend over the course of the academic year. This estimate is based on local cost of living calculations and surveys of the student body. Full-time, in-state undergraduate students living on campus can expect to pay at least $1,000 less than the average cost of attendance at other North Carolina public universities. Out-of-state and graduate tuition costs are also well below national averages.
Tuition rates are reviewed by the UNCG’s Board of Trustees and the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina System and set annually by the North Carolina legislature.
Online Programs and Tuition
Online programs offer students an additional value when students receive instruction outside the state of North Carolina. To be eligible for the online rate, students must:

- Have an official non-resident Residency Determination Service designation prior to the schedule adjustment period for a given term.
- Be admitted to and enrolled in online course(s) in an approved online program.
- Reside outside of the state of North Carolina.
Following an official Residency Determination Service (RDS) designation, an attribute (ONNC) is added to the student’s record automatically within 48-72 hours of UNCG receiving the determination. This attribute will result in tuition being assessed at the Outside NC tuition rate. Online students pay a different set of mandatory fees charged per credit hour.
Where Your Tuition Dollars Go
Tuition is used to support a variety of functions at UNCG, including classroom instruction, student services, maintenance of facilities and infrastructure, need-based aid, and institutional support. Tuition is also supplemented by appropriations from the North Carolina General Assembly.
Required student fees support programs, services, and facilities on campus and online for which state funds are not available and/or cannot be used. Students enrolled in main campus programs can expect these required fees. Depending on student type and major, additional fees may apply. The fee covers 85% of the athletics budget and pays for debt incurred on capital projects which cannot be built using state funds. For example: UNCG’s soccer and baseball stadiums, the Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness, the Elliott University Center renovation, and the Anna M. Gove Student Health Center. It also supports the Spartan Chariot campus transportation shuttle system and health, counseling, and wellness services at the Anna M. Gove Student Health Center.
Fixed Tuition Program
UNCG participates in the Fixed Tuition Program, where all UNC System institutions fix tuition for up to eight consecutive semesters (excluding summer sessions) for North Carolina residents who meet certain requirements.
