TarHeel Guarantee: Launched in 2024, this initiative covers out-of-pocket costs for tuition and mandatory fees for North Carolina undergraduates whose families make less than $80,000 a year.
Carolina Computing Initiative: Ensures that all students have access to the technology needed to be successful at Carolina.
Laptop grant program: For incoming first-year and transfer undergraduate students without a previous bachelor’s degree. Based on financial need students are evaluated for eligibility by submitting their aid applications (FAFSA and CSS Profile) by the deadlines. It's important to remember not to stop your search at scholarships exclusive to Chapel Hill. The best thing you can do to win scholarships is become aware of any opportunities that could help fund your education. There are many national merit scholarships, national need-based scholarships, or local scholarships in your community that you may qualify for.

General Criteria for Merit Scholarships

While specific requirements vary, merit scholarships typically consider the following:

UNC offers academic scholarships based on a detailed and comprehensive review of your application for admission. There is no minimum GPA or test score required for consideration, nor is there any GPA or test score that guarantees a scholarship offer.

When you apply for admission to UNC, you’re automatically considered for admission-based scholarships. Scholarships range in value from $3,000 all the way up to full cost of attendance. If you are selected for an Academic Scholarship, you will see your scholarship offer letter in your MyCarolina portal.

Maintaining Your Scholarship

Academic scholarships are renewable for up to 8 semesters / 4 years of undergraduate study - not including summer terms. If your GPA has fallen below 3.0 you do not need to panic. We are here to work with you and support you during your undergraduate studies and give you time to bring your GPA back up. If you need to withdraw from the current semester for health reasons, family reasons, etc., please let us know. Your academic scholarship will not be impacted; however, the semester you withdraw from counts as one of your 8 semesters of receiving your scholarship. As a scholar you can take an approved senior underload in your final semester before graduating and still receive the full amount of your Academic Scholarship.

Prominent UNC Merit Scholarships

UNC boasts several prestigious merit scholarships, each with unique requirements and benefits:

Morehead-Cain Scholarship

The Morehead-Cain Scholarship is the most prestigious of UNC Chapel Hill scholarships and is considered by many to be the most prestigious scholarship at UNC. Each year the school chooses about 75 students to be Morehead-Cain Scholars. These students typically have outstanding academics and demonstrate leadership in their communities.

This four-year, fully-funded program supports top academic students and leaders worldwide. It requires a separate application.

Robertson Scholarship

Similar to the Morehead-Cain Scholarship, the Robertson Scholarship also requires a separate application.

Kenan Music Scholars Program

The Kenan Music Scholars Program offers a four-year, full-tuition scholarship (including student fees, room, and board) to prospective first-year students. UNC hosts auditions annually for this scholarship.

Thomas Wolfe Scholarship

The Thomas Wolfe Scholarship provides full, four-year financial support to one incoming student per year, covering tuition, room and board, books, a new laptop, and a summer stipend.

Chancellor's Science Scholars Program

The Chancellor’s Science Scholars Program gives students the opportunity to get a head start on their education with a fully funded intensive six-week Summer EXCELerator program before their first year of college. To apply, high school seniors must first apply Early Action to UNC. Then students are selected from the common app based on academic excellence and a demonstrated interest in STEM and research. Finalists are invited to come on campus for Selection Weekend, where they are interviewed by UNC faculty and staff.

Albert Scholarships

Albert Scholarships are available to incoming first-year students majoring in engineering. Albert Scholars are members of the University Honors Program.

Delbridge E. Scholarship

This scholarship was established to recognize and support students pursuing study within the University Honors Program and/or disciplinary honors programs. Recipient must present evidence of character as demonstrated through their involvement in community service work or reasonably similar extracurricular activities. Delbridge E. This fund supports travel outside the United States for the Delbridge E.

UNC Scholars Program

Scholarships in the UNC Scholars Program include: B. Robert Williamson Jr., Blue Sky, Carolina, Colonel Robinson, Innovation, Johnston, Morrison, Pogue, and Wood Family. We recruit some of the best undergraduate professors on campus to work with you and a small group of your peers in the scholars program over the course of your four years at Carolina.

The Application Process

The application process for UNC merit scholarships generally involves the following steps:

Apply for Admission: When you apply for admission to UNC, you are automatically considered for admission-based scholarships.
Complete Financial Aid Applications: For fullest consideration for all Academic Scholarships, we recommend completing financial aid applications once they are available after October 1. (FAFSA and CSS Profile) by the deadlines.
Supplemental Applications (if required): Certain scholarships, such as the Morehead-Cain and Robertson Scholarships, require separate applications in addition to the general UNC application. There are three UNC scholarships that have supplemental requirements in addition to completing the admissions application.
Essays: Craft compelling essays that showcase your academic achievements, leadership experiences, and commitment to service.
Interviews: Some scholarships may involve on-campus interviews with UNC faculty and staff. Finalists are invited to come on campus for Selection Weekend, where they are interviewed by UNC faculty and staff.

Understanding Financial Aid Terms

Adjusted Gross Income (AGI): Defined as gross income minus adjustments to income. Gross income includes your wages, dividends, capital gains, business income, retirement distributions as well as other income.
Aid Year: Shorthand used to describe an academic year for processing purposes in Connect Carolina. Aid year 2019 refers to Academic year 2018-2019 (Fall 2018, Spring 2019, Summer 2019). Aid Year 2020 refers to Academic year 2019-2020 (Fall 2019, Spring 2020, Summer 2020).
Census Date: For financial aid census date is when we will lock in your enrolled hours. If your enrollment is different at census date from when your aid was originally offered, we will have to adjust your aid to reflect your enrollment at census.
Academic Year: Period of enrollment that covers fall, spring and summer.

Cost of Attendance

The average tuition ranges widely based on whether a student is going to the school in-state vs. out-of-state. For in-state students, the average cost of tuition and fees is $8,989 a semester, and for out-of-state students, the average cost of tuition and fees is $37,550. Non-resident students (self-disclosed or as determined by RDS), who receive a full scholarship (tuition, fees, housing, and meals), are charged for tuition at the NC resident rate, beginning their first fall semester. This means the offered value of your scholarship is based on the resident rate instead of the non-resident rate. Please note that if you take Summer School at Carolina before you first fall semester, this provision does not apply.
