University Career Services also offers information and resources for students seeking on-campus and part-time employment opportunities.
Handshake: Your Central Hub
University Career Services launched Handshake, a new online portal where students can explore job and internship postings, as well as details about on-campus recruiting, career fairs, workshops, employer contact information and more. This platform serves as a centralized hub for all student employment opportunities.
The Student Employment Portal
The Student Employment Portal is the centralized location for the student employee application, hiring, and job creation process. Open OnePort and in the left side menu click “Employment” then “Student Employment” to navigate to the Student Employment Portal. Hiring Managers/Supervisors must have an employer profile in order to access the Portal. Students must complete all required hiring documents and steps.

Resident Advisor (RA)
Resident Advisors (RAs) are responsible for carrying out the values of the Department of Housing and Residence Life by assisting with the growth, belonging, and community on their floors and within their hall(s). The RA is a student peer leader who lives in the residence halls and is in an integral position in the Department of Housing and Residence Life.
University Professional Internship Program (UPIP)
Internships offered through the University Professional Internship Program (UPIP) differ significantly from most other student employment positions on campus, as they are designed to provide professional knowledge and skill development consistent with your major/career goals. UPIP positions are not your average student employment job where you just show up and complete tasks as directed.
Carolina Performing Arts
Carolina Performing Arts has positions available for students to gain experience across multiple departments, including Front-of-House, Production, and Ticketing Services.
- Front of House: Front of House staff are responsible for creating and maintaining a welcoming, safe environment for all guests, including greeting patrons, tracking attendance, assisting with any customer service or wayfinding needs, ensuring the safety of guests throughout the event and doing minor setup and cleanup of event spaces. Scheduled hours will primarily fall on nights and weekends but will vary widely week to week in accordance with the event schedule. No prior experience necessary!
- Production: Receive comprehensive on-the-job training in the technical and logistical aspects of live production such as lighting, audio, staging, and backstage management. Duties include but are not limited to clearing and prepping the performance area, setting up and testing audio, lighting, and staging equipment, as well as making sure we are show ready. Whether you are scheduled to setup, operate, or tear down an event, you will have the opportunity to advance in both technical expertise and leadership. Production shifts can range anywhere between 2-10+ hours between 6:00am and 2:00am.
- Ticketing Services: Box Office Associates provide best-in-class customer service to everyone who encounters CPA Ticketing Services. Associates must be available to work in the box office at least nine hours per week over multiple days during our weekly hours of operation.
Carolina Performing Arts hires in the Fall and Spring. Interviews for fall positions are held at the beginning of the fall semester, and hiring concludes in the first week of classes. Interviews for spring positions are held at the end of the fall semester, and hiring concludes in the last week of classes. - Administration Office: Under the supervision of the Executive Office Administrator and the Carolina Union Executive Director, the Office Assistant role supports the Administration Office of the Carolina Union. - Communications & Creative Services (CCS): Design Assistants in Communications & Creative Services (CCS) use their creativity and technical design abilities to create promotional materials for internal Union clients, as well as external clients including student organizations, Student Affairs, and other University departments. Communications Assistants in Communications & Creative Services (CCS) work directly with full-time CCS staff to create and implement innovative marketing strategies for the Carolina Union. They assist with drafting proposals, distributing information and materials, evaluating marketing initiatives, creating content, and managing the Union’s social media efforts. Photography Assistants in Communications & Creative Services (CCS) use their creativity, technical, and editing abilities to provide photography needs for CCS, Union departments, student organizations, and other Student Affairs and University clients. Videography Assistants in Communications & Creative Services (CCS) use their creativity, technical, and editing abilities to provide photography needs for CCS, Union departments, student organizations, and other Student Affairs and University clients.
- Reservations: Reservation Assistant works under the direct supervision of the Reservation Managers, a team responsible for the reservation and booking process for over 22,000 reservations annually. Housekeeping Lead will work under the direct supervision of the Housekeeping Manager at the Carolina Union to assist in maintaining the day-to-day routine upkeep of the facility. The housekeeping tasks include but are not limited to, glass cleaning, vacuuming, and sweeping. This position ensures that cleanliness issues are brought to the attention of the Housekeeping Manager. This staff member coordinates and assists in the training of housekeeping student staff and serves as a resource for all housekeeping team members.
- Maintenance: The Maintenance Coordinator will work under the supervision of the Supervisor and assistant supervisor at the Carolina Union to assist in maintaining the Carolina Union facility. The position will assist in leading a student team to conduct maintenance throughout the facility. This position ensures that maintenance issues are brought to the attention of the Maintenance Supervisor and or the maintenance assistant and assists in the creation of the plan and execution to remedy the issue.
- Operations: Acting as a steward of the Carolina Union, the Operations Assistant ensures the facility is operating under safe conditions including events that occur in the facilities and for the building’s guests. - Student Life & Leadership: The Data Analytics Coordinator for Student Life & Leadership in the Carolina Union plays an integral role in the assessment and co-curricular development efforts of the organization. The Student Life and Leadership Diversity Outreach Coordinator is responsible for implementing and supporting multiple campus cultural organizations’ events and programs. The Diversity Coordinator will develop and establish relationships across campus to build rapport and create participation from the student population. Under the supervision of the Student Organizations Program and Graduate Coordinator, the Heel Life Coordinator supports the Office of Student Life and Leadership and all university-affiliated student organizations. This position will aid student organizations in the utilization of University resources as well as empower students in their provision of services, programs, and activities that enhance the academic experience, extend learning and build community here at Carolina. This person will actively support the annual registration process. The Social Media Coordinator for Carolina After Dark is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the online presence of Carolina After Dark. Under the supervision of the Leadership Development Program Coordinator, the Student Leadership Coordinator position supports the office of Student Life & Leadership to further the mission of leadership development campus wide. Under the supervision of the Student Activities Program Coordinator, the Student Life & Leadership (SLL) Office Assistant position supports the Office of Student Life and Leadership to further the mission of the Student Life & Leadership, the Carolina Union Activities Board, The Graduate and Professional Student Government and the Undergraduate Student Government. Under the supervisor of the Student Activities Program Coordinator, the SLL Office Assistant Lead provides clerical oversight, office support, student staff support, and works on special projects as needed. The Professional Development Coordinator for Student Life & Leadership in the Carolina Union plays an integral role in the co-curricular development efforts of the organization. The Social Media Coordinator for Student Life & Leadership is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the online presence of the Carolina Union. Under the supervision of the Leadership Development Program Coordinator, the Student Leadership Coordinator supports the Office of Student Life and Leadership to further the mission of the SPARK program.
Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program
FWS is a federally funded, financial aid employment program available during fall and spring semesters. FWS positions are paid an hourly rate, determined by the Financial Aid Office, on a biweekly basis. All hourly student employee positions, unless specifically noted in the job post, can be funded by Federal Work Study.
FWS Eligibility and Funding
Students earn their FWS funding by working on campus. It is important to note that students with Federal Work Study awards are not guaranteed an on-campus position.
FWS Hour Restrictions
Students can work a maximum of 20 hours per week in their FWS-funded position during the academic year.
General Student Employment Guidelines
Hour Restrictions
During the academic semesters, Non-FWS student employees can work a maximum of 28 hours per week inclusive of all on-campus paid positions.
International Students
International students can apply for any on-campus position once they have work authorization and a Social Security Number (SSN).

Hiring Process
- Fill out and submit the job application.
- Meet with Human Resources: To complete the I-9 Supporting Documentation portion of the I-9 Form, schedule your meeting. Your I-9 Supporting Documentation must be the original, physical document.
Important Reminder
Students cannot begin working on-campus until all of their required hiring paperwork has been submitted and processed with HR and Payroll.
Timesheet Submission
Student employees are required to track, enter, and submit accurate hours worked by the conclusion of each pay period through the bi-weekly online timesheet in OnePort.
- Make sure your role is chosen and click “TimeSheet”.
- The selection criteria should auto-select an “Approve” or “Acknowledge Time” choice. The appropriate pay period automatically defaults to the current pay period.
- Review the student employee’s entered hours for accuracy. If everything is correct, approve the timesheet. Do this for each student employee you supervise.
