Transferring to UNC Chapel Hill: What GPA Do You Need?
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) is a dream school for many students. Transferring to UNC Chapel Hill can be an exciting opportunity. If you're a college student considering transferring to UNC Chapel Hill, understanding the transfer GPA requirements is crucial. UNC remains an incredibly transfer-friendly school. Transfer Acceptance Rate at UNC Chapel Hill
The University of North Carolina is a dream school for many high-achieving teens from all over the world. For entry in the fall of 2023, UNC received 3,701 applications and accepted 1,668 individuals. This means that the UNC transfer acceptance rate is 45%. In the last few years, acceptance rates for UNC Chapel Hill transfers have risen to near 50%. As with their first-year admissions, UNC favors North Carolina residents in the process. They do not release their in-state and out-of-state transfer figures. However, in one recent year, first-year applicants from in-state were accepted at five times the rate of non-residents.
GPA Requirements for UNC Transfer Students
While there isn't a hard GPA requirement, having a strong GPA will certainly improve your chances of being accepted. While there is no hard minimum GPA requirement, competitive applicants typically have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, and many admitted students have even higher GPAs. In one recent year, the school reported that the average GPA among enrolling transfers was 3.57. The average transfer GPA for admitted students tends to be around a 3.7, but it can vary depending on the applicant pool and the rigor of your current college coursework. To have a shot at transferring into UNC, you should have a current GPA of at least 4.7 - ideally you’re GPA will be around 4.89.
Students who have less than a C average (2.0 on a 4.0 scale) may complete courses at another university to raise their grade point average to the point where they may be considered for transfer admission to the University.
Other Academic Requirements and Considerations
Beyond GPA, UNC Chapel Hill considers several other academic factors.

- Credits: UNC Chapel Hill requires a minimum of 24 transferable semester hour credits (or 36 quarter hours) at the time of application, but most successful transfer students have at least 45 semester hours or 67 quarter hours. A maximum of 64 semester hours can be transferred from a 2-year college (96 from a 4-year institution). Keep in mind that students are generally expected to transfer in after completing two years of full-time study. The maximum number of hours that may be transferred from any and all institutions combined is 75. The University calculates transferred semesters based on the number of transfer credit hours accepted by UNC-Chapel Hill, not based on the number of semesters in which the student was enrolled at other colleges.
- Coursework: It's essential to complete the necessary coursework in your intended major or a closely related field. Additionally, UNC places a strong emphasis on fulfilling their general education requirements, so make sure you have taken a variety of courses, such as English composition, foreign language, math, natural sciences, and social sciences. Students interested in attending the University should pursue a challenging high school curriculum. Such a curriculum will typically include at least five academic courses during each year of high school - preferably one each in the core disciplines of English, mathematics, social science, natural science, and world languages. Students who challenge themselves with the rigorous courses available to them, such as Advanced Placement (AP), Dual Enrollment (DE), International Baccalaureate (IB), Cambridge, and other advanced or college-level work, tend to be more prepared to succeed in college - and we encourage our candidates to take at least five of the most rigorous courses available to them.
- Transcripts: Submit transcripts by secure electronic delivery from your high school and all colleges and universities attended, regardless of whether you received credit. Application Components
UNC Chapel Hill looks at more than just your GPA during the transfer admissions process.
- Application: Apply online through the Common Application. Your application and application fee or fee waiver are due by February 15. The UNC transfer deadline for most fall applicants is February 15. Some programs have earlier priority deadlines, such as Clinical Laboratory Science and Neurodiagnostics & Sleep Science, among others.
- Essays: Your personal essay and short answers give us the chance to hear your voice and see you as a whole person, not just a student. The personal statement helps you distinguish yourself in your own voice. What do you want admissions readers to know about you that is not reflected elsewhere in your application? Choose the option that best helps you answer that question and write an essay using the prompt to inspire and structure your response (1,250 - 3,250 characters, approx. On your application, you’ll tell us about how you spend your time outside the classroom and why it’s important to you. You can also share achievements that you’re proud of.
- Recommendations: Two recommendations (preferably from college instructors).
- Test Scores: Students with a weighted GPA of 2.8 or above (on a 4.0 scale) are not required to submit a test score. University of North Carolina system institutions, which include the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, have a standardized testing waiver in place through fall 2026 for applicants with a high school cumulative, weighted GPA of 2.80 or greater. Transfer applicants are also not required to submit a test score if they are 21 years or older or if they have 24 or more transferrable hours. While standardized test scores (SAT/ACT) are not required for transfer students who have completed more than a year of college, they can still be submitted if you believe they will strengthen your application. - Extracurricular Activities: Involvement in extracurricular activities. Similarly, extracurricular activities and your personal essay can demonstrate your character and potential as a member of the UNC community.
- Other Considerations: Applicants’ eligibility to return to previous institutions may be considered in their evaluation. If you believe your academic progress has been affected by disability-related issues, we encourage you to share this information with us. We require all applicants (including students offered admission) to disclose any new school-based disciplinary incidents or criminal charges that occur after the application was submitted within ten days of the occurrence.

Although each candidate’s academic record and standardized test scores, if submitted, are important elements in the admissions decision, the candidate’s essays, letter(s) of recommendation, accomplishments outside the classroom, and demonstrated character traits are also carefully considered. Additional Information for Specific Applicants
- International Students: International students are considered for admission on the same basis as other candidates and must provide the same information required of all other applicants. citizens and non-permanent resident students for whom English is not their first language must submit test scores to demonstrate their English proficiency. We accept TOEFL (our code is C182), IELTS, Duolingo, Cambridge English C1 Advanced, and Cambridge C2 Proficiency. We do not waive this proficiency requirement based on grades in English courses or SAT/ACT scores. United States immigration law requires proof of financial support for the student’s entire program of study.
- N.C. Community College Students: In a recent year, a sizable 38% of enrolled transfer students came from North Carolina community colleges. The University honors the official Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) with the North Carolina Community College System. Students who transfer to UNC-Chapel Hill from a North Carolina community college may transfer credit earned at UNC to fulfill their degree requirements at the community college.
- Veterans: We welcome applications from veterans of the United States military, active-duty servicemen and women, and their dependents. Veterans and those who remain on active duty may earn University credit for their military education and training, depending upon their experience.
