Undergraduate Research Scholars Programs: Opportunities and Guidance
Undergraduate Research Scholars Programs (URSP) offer invaluable opportunities for undergraduate students to engage in research, develop critical skills, and prepare for future careers. These programs vary in structure and focus but share the common goal of fostering a vibrant research community and enhancing students' academic experience. This article provides an overview of URSPs, drawing upon examples and guidelines from various universities, including UCLA and the University of Florida (UF), to offer a comprehensive understanding of these programs.
Overview of Undergraduate Research Opportunities
Research as an undergraduate student can take on many forms, but the most common path is doing research under the guidance of an established faculty member at the university. Depending on the subject you are doing research on, it can take on many forms, from laboratory and field work to historical studies to creative works. URSPs recognize the transformative power of research in shaping students' academic and professional trajectories. By engaging in research, students gain experiential learning opportunities that enhance their understanding of their field far beyond classroom learning.
Program Structure and Eligibility
URSPs are often structured to provide students with a suite of activities that prepare them for research and enhance their resumes. Some programs, like the one at UF, are invitation-only, recognizing students with superior academic records. These programs aim to cultivate future leaders by providing a supportive community and access to research opportunities.
UCLA Undergraduate Research Scholars Program (URSP)
The URSP at UCLA is open to undergraduates who will have junior or senior class standing in Fall 2025. Juniors are eligible to receive scholarships up to $4,500, and seniors are eligible to receive scholarships up to $6,000. It is important to note that this program does not place students into labs or research opportunities but provides financial support for students pursuing their own research projects. Scholarships are disbursed through the UCLA Financial Aid Office in three equal payments, once at the beginning of each quarter.
University of Florida (UF) URSP
The URSP at UF is designed for motivated, future leaders. As part of this group, students find and excel in research positions. Students in URSP participate in a one credit course during their first semester at UF. In the following semester, they have priority to register for courses to do research in a group-setting under the guidance of a faculty member. Throughout the program, participants work on developing their online professional presence through an e-Portfolio, can develop their scientific communication skills by presenting their work to other students, and ultimately publish their research in a peer-reviewed journal.

Financial Aid and Scholarship Implications
Many URSPs offer scholarships to support students' research endeavors. At UCLA, juniors qualify for academic scholarships up to $4,500, while seniors qualify for academic scholarships up to $6,000. However, students receiving financial aid should be aware of potential adjustments to their aid packages to avoid exceeding their financial need or cost of attendance. It is crucial to check with the Financial Aid Office to determine if accepting a scholarship will impact their financial aid.
At Ohio State University, the scholarships typically range from $1000 to a maximum of $2000 and will be distributed during Autumn semester of 2025. The funds automatically go toward the payment of the student recipient’s university tuition and fees.
Application Process and Requirements
The application process for URSPs generally involves submitting an online application and a letter of recommendation from a faculty research mentor. The application often requires a detailed project proposal outlining the research project's objectives, methodology, and expected outcomes.
UCLA URSP Application
A complete application consists of the online MyUCLA application and one letter of recommendation submitted by the applicant’s UCLA Faculty Research Mentor. Faculty Research Mentors will not receive an automated invitation to submit a letter of recommendation. Letters should be addressed to: Dr. No, headings are not required. The online application may be started in advance using the prompts below. All application materials are due by 11:59 PM. The application should include:
- Previous Research Statement: Briefly summarize your previous research experience. Include your research mentor/advisor, the length of your involvement, a brief summary of your work, and, if applicable, any course credit you received.
- Project Title: Provide a descriptive title for your research project.
- Proposal: Describe the research project that you plan to conduct during the 2025-2026 academic year. Include an introduction, hypothesis, materials and methods, and expected results. Include a timeline for the project and what you generally plan to complete in each quarter. Please use the five section headers below.
- Materials and Methods: Describe the tasks you will be performing, including laboratory techniques and equipment you will be learning and applying to address your hypothesis.
- Literature References (optional): List any literature references you cited in your proposal. 1500 characters max, including spaces. You may format your in-text citations in the manner that is most appropriate for your discipline (e.g. *NOTE: Faculty Research Mentors will not receive an automated invitation to submit a letter of recommendation. Letters should be addressed to: Dr. No, headings are not required. Due to the character limit, we recommend using numerical in-text citations (e.g. “(1)”).

- A project proposal (please note the detailed information on the application materials) which includes:
- the motivation and context for the proposed research, including a discussion of related scholarship in the discipline and any work that you have undertaken so far;
- a clear statement of your research question and the general significance of the project;
- a concise summary of the methodology to be used in the research;
- the expected outcomes;
- plans for forthcoming presentations and/or publications (if applicable);
- a bibliography;
- A discussion of responsible research practice approvals (if using human or animal subjects);
- Project advisor recommendation which must articulate in some detail the form and nature of the student's involvement in the research project.
- Please note that all proposals will be evaluated on writing and grammar.
Important Considerations for Application Materials
- Formatting: Do not use special typeface formatting such as italics, boldface, underlining, superscripts, or subscripts. Do not use special paragraph formatting such numbered/bulleted/multilevel lists. The online application system does not support this special formatting and will convert everything to plain text after submission.
- Character Limits: Pay close attention to character limits for each section of the application.
- Deadlines: Ensure all materials are submitted by the application deadline. The online application automatically closes at the deadline.
- Online Submission: All application responses must be submitted through the MyUCLA Survey system.
Interdisciplinary Research Considerations
Students engaged in interdisciplinary research that blurs the lines between HASS (humanities, arts, and social sciences) and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) may have difficulty deciding which Undergraduate Research Center (URC-HASS or URC-Sciences) they should apply to for the URFP and URSP. Due to the specific eligibility criteria of each center and the large number of submissions our departments receive, we cannot transfer applications across centers.
To ensure that your application is reviewed fairly, make sure you apply to the center that best suits your research. Below is a guideline to help determine the proper home for your project.
- Does your research application involve model organisms, i.e. If yes, submit to URC-Sciences.
- If yes, submit to URC-Sciences.
