The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

As soon as you emerge from Universal Wonderland and take a right, you will find an open area with several standing rocks that resemble Stonehenge, in England. This is the entrance to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter (ウィザーディング・ワールド・オブ・ハリー・ポッター, Wizādingu Wārudo obu Harī Pottā) is a themed area based on the Harry Potter series. It is a collaboration of Universal Destinations & Experiences and Warner Bros. Entertainment. It contains the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride and the Flight of the Hippogriff roller coaster. The village of Hogsmeade and Hogwarts’ Black Lake are also recreated.

The main attractions here are Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, which is a ride that takes you through the world of Harry Potter, and the Hippogriff, which is a “family-friendly” roller coaster.

Super Nintendo World

Located beside the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Super Nintendo World is one of the most popular areas at Universal Studios Japan and is themed around Nintendo characters, especially Super Mario. Super Nintendo World is wedged in at the northern end of the park, west of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and south of the Nintendo headquarters that are just outside of the property. Super Mario Land opened on March 18, 2021, and is focused on the Mario franchise and its Yoshi spin-off series. Guests enter Super Nintendo World through a warp pipe from an entrance plaza. The pipe leads into Super Mario Land, and specifically Princess Peach's Castle. When guests exit the castle, they enter the courtyard on the second floor, immersed in the Mushroom Kingdom with Bowser's Castle across the area. Several interactive mini-attractions where guests can interact with Mario enemies and Bowser Jr. The park is consistently installing seasonal attraction and show overlays.

Due to its popularity, entry to Super Nintendo World is often controlled by an Area Timed Entry system, especially on busy days. Timed entry slots can fill up quickly, sometimes shortly after the park opens.

The final zone is New York, which is where you will find the Amazing Adventures of Spiderman ride. A 3D dark ride based on Marvel's Spider-Man. In May 2023, the park announced the attraction would be closing.

Additional Attractions and Shows

Universal Studios Japan offers a variety of shows and attractions to enhance the visitor experience.

  • Animal Actors Stage: A stage show featuring multiple animals performing stunts and tricks.

  • Animation Celebration: A 29-minute interactive show attraction, featuring Woody Woodpecker. Manufactured by BRC Imagination Arts, the attraction used special effects and the company's Holavision technology to integrate a live actor with projected animation illusions on stage. The show begins in the pre-show area, where the guests visit a working animation studio. A host presents them a video, introducing scriptwriter Matsui (played by Rome Kanda[45]), animator Kyoko, colorist Ayaka, and Gōtokuji (played by Shôji Maruoka[45]), the studio's boss. Matsui explains the animation process used in the making of a Woody Woodpecker cartoon. Next, the guests enter the main theater, the Digital Studio, which seated 300 guests. Tetsuya "Yoshi" Yoshikawa (voiced by Toshihiko Seki[45]), an apprentice animation director, is moments away from completing his first cartoon and demonstrating computer animation. Woody (voiced by Azusa Ichiba[45]) somehow escapes from the animation computer, enters the room as a dimensional figure and gleefully wreaks havoc throughout the studio.[a][51][52] After the show, guests were escorted into a room with interactive kiosks and large-scale games where they could make their own Woody Woodpecker cartoon. Before the show opened in Japan, a US test version was produced to prove the show's concept in 1997.[53] In 2002, the attraction won the Outstanding Achievement Award in the "Attraction" category at the 9th Annual Thea Awards.[54][55][45] On June 1, 2016, the attraction was put on an extended hiatus and temporarily replaced with Yo-Kai Watch: The Real from July 1, 2016 to January 8, 2018,[56][57] with an announcement that it would reopen on April 1, 2018.

  • Motion Picture Magic: A live show attraction. It was hosted by director Steven Spielberg, and was originally designed by experience designer Bob Rogers and the design team BRC Imagination Arts,[61] provided a tribute to the Universal Studios brand of motion pictures.

  • Terminator 2:3-D: A 3D/live-action show based on Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Temporarily closed in September 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

An abbreviated one-act version of the musical, presented in Japanese. An Oz-themed carousel.

Tips for a Successful Visit

Your time at USJ can either be one of the best days of your life, or a miserable series of long lines and unhappy kids. Good planning and good timing can make all the difference.

  • VIP Wristband: If you decide not to buy an Express Pass, at least consider buying a USJ VIP Wristband. This allows you to enter the park before other visitors (pretty much eliminating the need to wait on line).

  • Weather: Check the weather in advance and dress appropriately. Don’t underestimate how cold it can be in the winter and how hot in the summer.

  • Timing: Try to go on weekdays that are not holidays.

  • Snacks: Buy some snacks in advance.

  • Single Rider Lines: Wait for popular rides on the single-rider lines.

Accommodation

USJ is only 15 minutes or so by train from central Osaka, so you can stay in the center of the city and visit USJ. But, staying at the park makes everything easier and more convenient. The hotels listed here are all within easy walking distance of USJ. There are some great restaurants in the Universal City Walk arcade, right outside the park entrance.

  • The Park Front Hotel at Universal Studios Japan: This stylish and comfortable hotel is less than a one-minute walk to the main entrance of USJ. Rooms are spacious by Japanese standards, there are some great views from the rooms, and the staff is welcoming.

  • Hotel Universal Port: This excellent hotel is a bit further from the park entrance than other hotels. It will take you between 5 and 10 minutes to get to the entrance, which is not a great hardship considering how much walking you will do in the park, but it’s something to keep in mind.

  • Hotel Keihan Universal Tower: Located above Universal-city Station and a short walk from the park entrance, this oddly-named hotel is a very good choice. We particularly like the open-air bathing area on the 14th floor, which offers great views of the Osaka Harbor area. Some rooms also have great views. The Keihan Universal Tower is a decent mid-range hotel just one minute’s walk from USJ.

  • Kintetsu Universal City: The Kintetsu Universal City, like the other hotels in this section, is very close to the park’s main entrance. It’s an older hotel but it’s well run.

Essential Services

  • SIM Cards: You can buy an eSim to activate in Japan or buy a data-only SIM card online for collection when you arrive at Tokyo’s Narita or Haneda Airports or Kansai International Airport.

  • Travel Insurance: World Nomads offers simple and flexible travel insurance.
