University College Birmingham: A Hub for Vocational Excellence and Academic Achievement

University College Birmingham (UCB), located in the heart of the UK's second city, stands as a testament to the power of vocational training, academic excellence, and cultural diversity. From its humble beginnings as a municipal technical school to its current status as a degree-awarding institution, UCB has consistently evolved to meet the changing needs of its students and the industries they serve.

A Rich History of Culinary and Creative Arts

The roots of UCB can be traced back to the 19th century with Birmingham's Municipal Technical School, the predecessor to Aston University. In 1957, it became a separate College of Bakery, Catering, Domestic Science and Associated Studies under the control of Birmingham City Council. This institution, later known as the Birmingham College of Food and Domestic Arts, consolidated courses from nine schools across the city when it moved to its present site in Summer Row in 1967, with the official opening by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in 1968 marking a pivotal moment.

Throughout the years, the college adapted to reflect the expanding range of courses it offered, becoming the Birmingham College of Food, Tourism and Creative Studies (BCFTCS) in the 1980s. In 2007, it achieved another milestone, being renamed University College Birmingham (UCB). As part of a general re-organisation of further education in the United Kingdom, the college became independent of council control on 1 April 1993. It obtained full university status and degree awarding powers in 2012.

A Modern Institution with State-of-the-Art Facilities

UCB boasts a modern campus spread across several buildings, including Summer Row (with the Link Building), Camden House on East Parade, McIntyre House, Moss House, and the James Cond Building on George Street. These buildings house a range of specialist facilities, including training restaurants, a health and leisure club, hairdressing and beauty therapy salons, food and beverage test laboratories, a video production suite, demonstration theatres, and computer suites, including a facility for Early Years students. UCB also specializes in Bakery and patisserie, with students producing products for the Cakes and Bakes shop at Summer Row.

Since 2014, UCB has invested £140 million in its campuses and facilities, including the construction of McIntyre House and Moss House. These ambitious projects reflect a commitment to providing students with the best possible learning environment. In 2023 UCB opened James Cond Building, and Camden House will also include the new 6th Form building from September 2024.

A Diverse Range of Courses

UCB offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, as well as higher-level apprenticeships. These courses are delivered through two schools, catering to students at all levels of study. The majority of undergraduate degrees are accredited by the University of Warwick, a highly regarded institution in the UK and worldwide. All of the university's courses include opportunities to obtain work experience, and many degree-level courses give the option of a 48-week paid placement, which takes place approximately halfway through the course. Many students undertake their placement in the UK, but there are also many opportunities available each year elsewhere in Europe, as well as the United States and Canada.

Today, hospitality managers, aviation executives, hairdressers and makeup artists, educators, chefs, bakers, tourism industry experts, business leaders, and creative entrepreneurs acquire skills for life at UCB.

Student Support Services

UCB is committed to providing a supportive learning environment for all students. Student Services, located on the Ground Floor of The Link, serves as a one-stop shop for information, advice, and guidance on non-academic matters. The Student Services team offers a range of support services, and students can drop in without an appointment to speak with a member of the team.

The university also provides library services to support students' academic endeavors. These services offer the resources, information, and study environments needed to achieve academic goals.

The Student Services Unit provides a range of services including the day-to-day operation of two halls of residence, career advice and guidance from the Careers and Employability Centre, the administration of Learner (Access) Support Fund, advice and support with finding and funding childcare, full-time counselling and nursing services and academic support for students from their Learning and Skills Development Centre. The Learning and Skills Development Centre co-ordinates support for students with additional needs, liaising with external agencies including Local Education Authorities on behalf of the student.

Campus Life and Sports Facilities

UCB has invested £6.1 million into fresh-thinking learning support spaces, providing an optimal environment for students to expand their minds. Each campus is sustainable, easy to navigate, and designed to enhance the student experience.

UCB offers a range of gym facilities open to students and staff. These facilities include state-of-the-art gyms located at Moss House and The Maltings, a dedicated gym for college students at Summer Row, as well as a sports hall available for booking.

Student Guild

The Student Guild is run by a team of eight, making up the Student Guild Executive, all elected by other students at the university. The Student Guild participates in a variety of sporting activities such as cricket, football, rugby union, hockey, basketball, netball and Jitsu with teams competing against rival universities in the British Universities Sports Association leagues in the Midlands area.

Accommodation

The Maltings, named after the brewery formerly based at the site, is a popular accommodation option for first-year students. It is conveniently located within a 10 to 15-minute walk from the main campus and comprises 827 study bedrooms, including 809 en-suite rooms, of which five are twins. In addition to The Maltings, UCB also has accommodation at Cambrian Hall. The university provides space for 872 students in its halls of residence.

International Admissions

International students can apply to University College Birmingham through the online UCAS service. Entry requirements vary depending on the chosen degree and level of study. In 2023/24 the university had 4,930 students in higher education, including 495 postgraduates and 4,435 undergraduates. There are also currently 10,335 further education students, around 10% of whom are from outside the United Kingdom.
