Why Study Abroad? The Transformative Power of International Experiences

Studying abroad with UA can be the best thing you’ve ever done, not just because of the locations, but because of the people. This experience studying abroad has been absolutely amazing. Students make new connections, learn about themselves, and overcome challenges. Studying abroad in Belize was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life.

Personal Growth and Cultural Awareness

Many students who study abroad experience significant personal growth and expanded cultural awareness. As someone who has never been outside the country before, it can be a huge, scary, and exciting jump. The moment I arrived in London, I knew I was in for something unforgettable. When I arrived in Greece, it was overwhelming to see the history that was here. The food has been extremely delicious and unexpectedly cheaper than I thought.

Europe

Europe is a popular destination for UA students, offering a diverse range of cultural and academic experiences.

  • Greece: My study abroad program in Thessaloniki, Greece has been one of the most educational, enriching things I have ever experienced. My friend, Dima, and I have been lucky enough to study at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, in the Department of Music Studies. It’s been an unforgettable experience so far.
  • Germany: Hallo! Our adventure started in Wittenberg, a rural, homey town with massive historical significance. During my time in Germany and Prague for my study program, I discovered that food truly connects people in profound ways. The first country we touched down in was Munich, Germany. The architecture and the energy felt very different.
  • Czech Republic: Ajoy! We have made it to our last destination, Prague! As our study abroad journey reached its final chapter in Prague, Czech Republic, explored centuries of European history.
  • Croatia: When I first arrived in Dubrovnik, Croatia, there were a lot of thoughts running through my head.
  • Italy: Rome is one of the most famous tourist locations in the world and it absolutely lived up to the hype for me. When I first arrived in Florence, I was actually really nervous. We got dropped off just outside the city center, and it didn’t look like any of the pictures or videos I had seen online.
  • Norway: Impressive architecture, sparkling waters, and savory fish that melts on your tongue. These are three things you will experience when you visit Oslo, Norway!

The Americas

From the vibrant cultures of South America to the natural beauty of Belize, the Americas offer a wide array of study abroad opportunities.

  • Belize: I got home from Belize today, and I already miss it so much. It was incredibly hard to leave. I made so many memories I’ll never forget and friendships I hope will last for years to come. Studying abroad in Belize was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. We started out at Calabash Caye at the Turneffe Attol research station. They work together with the University of Belize.
  • Argentina: Gain international experience, forge lifelong friendships, and build your résumé while living and studying abroad in Buenos Aires.

Oceania

  • New Zealand: Kia Ora! New Zealand is an incredibly beautiful country, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every part of my experience so far. The New Zealand scenery has definitely not disappointed. We have gone on about four or five hikes so far and they have been absolutely gorgeous.

Africa

  • Zambia: First Impressions When I arrived in Livingston, Zambia, I was immediately struck by the vibrant culture and warm atmosphere. I chose to go on a mission trip to Livingstone, Zambia, because I felt called to serve and make a difference beyond my local community.

Semester at Sea: A Unique Global Voyage

With a mission “to advance the intellectual and social condition of the people of the state,” the University of Alabama (UA) Tuscaloosa puts a strong emphasis on global engagement in their curriculum - a perfect match for Semester at Sea! The Institute of Shipboard Education (ISE, the Semester at Sea parent organization) fosters an academic partnership with UA to ensure curriculum alignment, ease of credit transfer, and transfer of financial aid. The academic partnership between the University of Alabama Tuscaloosa and ISE began in 2009. Packing Tips

Give me a wig and call me Hermione-I packed a lot into that backpack. I don’t actually know whether I packed enough or too much. On my way to Dubrovnik, Croatia, I got unexpectedly stuck in New York City for 48 hours thanks to a delayed flight-and my checked bag was already halfway across the Atlantic. In my carry-on?
