University of Arizona: A Guide to Next Steps for Admitted Students

Streamlined Enrollment Through the Next Steps Center

Prospective students who have applied to the University of Arizona start getting acceptance letters on January 15. The University of Arizona has rebuilt the Next Steps Center in the UAccess Student Center, where students already access academic and financial information. The Next Steps Center ensures that enrolling students complete financial aid, residency status, deposit, Orientation reservation, placement exams, vaccine documentation, and dorm reservations.

Evolution of the Next Steps Center

The Next Steps Center was launched over 15 years ago by the former Student Administration Systems Group (SASG) as a homegrown application with a checklist of tasks and information for new admits. Two years ago, Student Transitions & Customer Service executive director Logan Adams and associate director Dolores Machado started looking for a new solution, one that would provide a friendlier interface that can be updated more easily. There were multiple existing options to choose from, including Slate (Arizona’s student recruiting CRM), Trellis, CatCloud and Student Center.

Student Center had launched a modernized web portal in summer 2020. By utilizing the InFlight application as a front end to the PeopleSoft back-end system, the UITS team was able to add modern navigation, a branded Arizona look and feel, mobile friendliness and accessibility for students entering information into or pulling information out of the system. Student Center IT manager for business analysis Lindsay Wedge and business analyst principal and product owner Eileen Seegmiller were eager to show the user-friendly capabilities for Next Steps Center in Student Center. Logan and Dolores were excited by the idea that incoming students could start using the system right away and continue coming back to it throughout their U of A academic careers.

Customization and Accessibility

The enrollment process can be complex, requiring the system to provide custom views for different kinds of students showing the processes they need to complete: 1st Year, Transfer, International, Global Campus, Arizona Online, Re-Admits, Non-Degree Seeking and Community Campus (high school students). With the modern design abilities available in Student Center, pulling all the required information out of the system to provide an outside application, plus linking back to Student Center to complete many of the tasks, was unnecessary.

The new Next Steps Center inside Student Center was built by a cross-department team drawing on a variety of expertise. The new portal can now be easily updated and reconfigured by the Student Transitions & Customer Service team. With the new Next Steps Center and the streamlined NetID and 2FA portal, the next class of students will have an easier time than ever starting at Arizona. Logan noted that although the planning started before Provost Prelock and President Garimella came to the university, it complements their strong focus on student success.

Academic Advising

Once admitted, scheduling an appointment with your advisor is a crucial step. Students will need to schedule an appointment with their advisor using the calendar link. Your UofA advisor will reach out to set up a call. During this meeting, you’ll discuss your goals and get guidance on which courses to take.

Understanding Financial Aid

Navigating financial aid is a critical part of preparing for university. If any grants are accepted, they will be applied to tuition and mandatory fees before employer payment. If you have questions regarding your Employer education benefit policy, please consult Guild support. You'll also want to ensure you are tagged as a Guild student with the school and ensure you continue to meet your employer's eligibility requirements.

University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix: Application and Acceptance Protocols

The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix application process is executed through WebAdMIT - an AAMC product. MD and MD/PhD applicants must complete and submit a primary application through AMCAS to be considered for admission to the school as "Regular MD" or “Combined Medical Degree/PhD” under the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix. The processing time for the AMCAS can take between several days to several weeks; therefore, students are encouraged to submit as early as possible, typically the first week of June.

Letters of Recommendation

The Admissions Committee requires a minimum of three letters (and recommends no more than five) from individuals with whom you have an established professional relationship and can clearly affirm the traits and characteristics desired in a physician. At least one letter from a recent clinical experience is highly recommended. Additional letters from individuals in a variety of settings are desired: employer, research lab supervisor, community service project leader, etc. Letters from family members or personal friends are not recommended.

Supplemental Application

To strengthen our holistic review process, the college will invite applicants to provide additional insight about their fit with our medical school, as well as the opportunity to describe how their prior experiences will contribute to the college's mission and core value of inclusive excellence. A photograph and a non-refundable $95 fee will be required to process the supplemental application. The college will have the opportunity to review the AMCAS, letters of recommendation and the supplemental application responses in determining whether to invite an applicant for an interview.

Multiple Mini-Interview (MMI)

Candidates invited to interview will have the option to participate in an in-person Multiple Mini-Interview (MMI). We will also be offering a limited number of virtual MMI opportunities during the season. The in-person MMIs will be part of an Applicant Visit Day - where candidates will have an opportunity to meet current students, interact with faculty and leadership, and learn more about the curriculum and extracurricular activities in a more personal setting.

Acceptance Offers and Enrollment Commitment

Applicants to the MD program will begin receiving acceptance offers beginning mid-October through mid-March. At no time is a financial deposit required. The College of Medicine - Phoenix follows the AAMC Application and Acceptance Protocols established by the AAMC.

February 19: “Plan to Enroll” option for accepted students becomes available. The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix highly recommends (but does not require) accepted students utilize this tool, as this assists us (and other medical schools) in ensuring we do not either over- or undersubscribe the amount of offers we extend.

April 15: The AAMC Application and Acceptance Protocols recommends accepted students narrow offers to three medical schools (if applicable). The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix highly recommends (but does not require) accepted students follow this protocol.

April 30: “Commit to Enroll” option for accepted students becomes available. From April 30 to 21 days prior to Orientation, The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix highly recommends (but does not require) accepted students utilize this tool when they are ready to commit and are withdrawing all other applications.

21 days prior to Orientation: “Commit to Enroll” is required to be selected by the accepted students matriculating to the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix. Failure to do so will result in the rescinding of the admission offer.
