A History of UCF Knights Baseball
The UCF Knights baseball team represents the University of Central Florida in NCAA Division I competition. As members of the Big 12 Conference, the Knights have a baseball history dating back to 1970, when the FTU Goldsox, a club baseball team, was formed.
Early Years: FTU Goldsox
Before becoming a Division I program, baseball at UCF began with the FTU Goldsox in 1970. Playing in the Amateur Baseball League of Central Florida, the Goldsox were initially managed by Jack Pantelias from 1970 until midway through the 1972 season. After Pantelias resigned, Doug Holmquist took over as interim coach, leading the team through the end of the season before being officially named head coach in 1973.
1973-1982: Early Varsity Program
UCF baseball first took the field in 1973. Bill Moon served as head coach from 1979 to 1982. The 1979 team marked a significant milestone, sharing the Sunshine State Conference title with Florida Southern University. That year, UCF achieved a 27-16 record and participated in the postseason regionals, marking their first championship.
1983-2007: The Jay Bergman Era
Jay Bergman took the helm in 1983, succeeding his role as head coach at Seminole Community College. Under his leadership, the Knights transitioned to Division I in 1985. Bergman's tenure was marked by considerable success, with UCF winning Atlantic Sun Championships in 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2004. The team also made NCAA Regional appearances in 1989, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2004. During his time, UCF achieved a national ranking of No. 13. Bergman's impact on the program was substantial, establishing UCF as a competitive force in collegiate baseball.
2008-2016: The Terry Rooney Era
Terry Rooney became head coach in 2008, bringing a wealth of experience from his previous assistant coaching positions at LSU, Notre Dame, Stetson, Old Dominion, James Madison, and George Washington. In 2011, Rooney guided the Knights to their first NCAA tournament appearance under his leadership, following a 38-21 season. The 2011 season was highlighted by victories over the No. 4 ranked Florida Gators in Gainesville and the then-ranked No. 5 Gators in Orlando, as well as a win against the No. 6 ranked Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee. In 2012, Rooney led the Knights to a No. 16 national ranking. From 2013 to 2016, the Knights recorded a 121-114 record under Rooney's leadership. In 2013, the Knights joined the American Athletic Conference (The American). Despite a 36-23 record in 2014, where Rooney was named American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, UCF did not make another NCAA tournament appearance. In 2015, the Knights began the season with a 22-7 record and were ranked No. 6 nationally through their first 30 games, but they finished the season with a 31-27 record.

2017-2023: The Greg Lovelady Era
Greg Lovelady was appointed as Rooney's successor in July 2016, after serving as Head Coach at Wright State. Lovelady revitalized the UCF Baseball program, leading the Knights to a 40-22 record in 2017. The Knights clinched the American Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship but were eliminated by East Carolina in the conference tournament semifinals after a 2-2 showing. The Knights earned a 2-seed in the Tallahassee Regional of the NCAA tournament but were defeated by Florida State after an initial loss to Auburn.
2024-Present: The Rich Wallace Era
On June 12, 2023, Florida State assistant coach Rich Wallace, an Orlando native and UCF alum, was named the 7th head coach of the program. In his first season, Wallace led the Knights to a 37-21 record in 2024, mirroring Lovelady's immediate impact. The team reached as high as #17 in the D1baseball poll. After a 2-1 showing in the Big 12 tournament, the Knights secured a 3-seed in the NCAA tournament, again in the Tallahassee region.
John Euliano Park
John Euliano Park, located on UCF's main campus in Orlando, Florida, serves as the home field for the UCF Knights baseball team. Originally constructed in 2001 as a state-of-the-art facility, it boasts an indoor training area with three batting cages and two pitching mounds. Initially named after former head coach Jay Bergman, the park has undergone expansions, increasing its seating capacity from 1,980 to 2,230 seats.
Notable Alumni
Mike Maroth, a former pitcher for the Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals, is among the notable alumni who have played for the UCF Knights baseball team.
Historical Context: Basketball's Parallel Success
Interestingly, around the same time as the baseball program's early development, the UCF men’s basketball team was also experiencing a period of significant achievement. The 1975-76 season was their first in the Sunshine State Conference, where they finished with a 20-5 overall record and a perfect 10-0 in conference play, securing the conference title in their inaugural year. This basketball team, coached by Torchy Clark (who was named Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year), featured standout players like Bo Clark, Bennie Shaw, and Jerry Prather. They averaged 94.8 points per game, with Shaw averaging 25.4 points per game and Bo Clark closely following at 24.1 points per game. This basketball team's early success provides an interesting parallel to the baseball program's journey during the same era.
