University of Electronic Science and Technology of China: Ranking and Programs
The University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), located in Chengdu, Sichuan, is a distinguished public university with a rich history and a strong focus on electronic information science and technology. Founded in 1956 under the guidance of Premier Zhou Enlai, UESTC has grown into a multidisciplinary institution that plays a pivotal role in China's technological advancement. It is co-sponsored by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Sichuan Provincial Government, and the Chengdu Municipal Government.
Historical Overview
UESTC's origins lie in the consolidation of electronics divisions from three prominent universities: Jiaotong University (now Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Xi'an Jiaotong University), Nanjing Institute of Technology (now Southeast University), and South China Institute of Technology (now South China University of Technology). This merger led to the establishment of the Chengdu Institute of Radio Engineering (CIRE), China's first higher education institution dedicated to electronic and information science and technology.
As early as the 1960s, CIRE was recognized as one of the nation's key higher education institutions, underscoring its significance in the development of China's electronics industry. In 1988, CIRE was renamed the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC). The university's commitment to excellence was further acknowledged through its selection as one of the top 100 key universities under the "State's Education Revival Project" (Project 211) in 1997. In 2000, UESTC transitioned to the Ministry of Education (MoE)-university system, becoming a national key university directly affiliated with the State's Ministry of Education. In 2001, UESTC was chosen as one of the 39 research-intensive universities in China to receive special funding under "Project 985," aimed at fostering world-class universities. The new Qingshuihe campus was inaugurated in 2007.
Today, UESTC has evolved into a multidisciplinary university that reports directly to the Ministry of Education. While electronic information science and technology remain at its core, the university also encompasses science and engineering as major fields, along with management, economics, medicine, and liberal arts.
Campuses and Infrastructure
UESTC boasts four campuses: Qingshuihe, Shahe, Jiulidi, and Yongning, with a total built-up area of 1,490 km2 (370,000 acres). The university offers more than 40 schools and 65 undergraduate majors, with 13 of them recognized as national-level featured majors. UESTC now has three main campuses in Chengdu-Qingshuihe, Shahe and Jiulidi, occupying a total of 16.6 km² (4100 acres).
