University of Florida Graduate Admission: Requirements and Deadlines
Applying to graduate programs at the University of Florida (UF) involves meeting specific requirements set by the UF Graduate School, the relevant college, and the specific program or concentration area. General Admission Requirements
To be admitted for graduate study, applicants must satisfy the requirements of both their chosen academic unit and the Graduate School. Accreditation must be from one of the following: the Higher Learning Commission, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the New England Commission of Higher Education, the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, or the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
Grade Point Average (GPA)
For applicants holding only a bachelor’s degree, a minimum GPA of B (3.0) is required. This GPA is calculated based on all grades and credits earned after the semester in which the applicant reached 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours. However, individual academic units may have more stringent GPA requirements. For example, the Department of Gender, Sexualities, and Women’s Studies requires a GPA of 3.2 for junior and senior years as an undergraduate.
Transcripts
Applicants must arrange for official transcripts to be sent directly from the registrar of each postsecondary institution attended to the UF Office of Admissions. For initial review purposes, unofficial transcripts can be uploaded through the application status page. However, an offer of admission is contingent upon the receipt of official transcripts.
Standardized Tests
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) may be required depending on the specific program. The “Admissions Requirements” section of the program will explicitly state if either test is necessary. Applicants should check their program requirements to determine if GRE scores are needed. Many programs require GRE scores, and UF accepts scores from both versions taken at a testing center as well as the GRE General Test at home. MBA applicants are typically required to submit satisfactory scores on the GMAT. Certain MHA, Sport Management, and Food and Resource Economics programs may also accept GMAT scores. Contact individual departments for specific requirements.
Some engineering programs may accept Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) scores as a substitute for the GRE. Some academic units or institutions may be exempt from the GRE or GMAT requirement at the program's discretion.
Official test scores must be sent to UF electronically by the testing agency. Scores generally arrive within 2-4 weeks. If scores are not shown as received on the applicant's Status Page after this period, providing the Admissions Office with a copy of the unofficial score report may help locate the test scores.
English Language Proficiency
Applicants from countries where English is not the official language must provide evidence of English language proficiency. UF accepts the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Official scores must be reported. If the name on the ETS scorecard does not exactly match the name on the UF application, the scores may not be posted.
The university does not accept scores compiled from multiple tests to meet English proficiency requirements. International students whose native language is English may be exempt from the English language test requirements.

Application Fee
A nonrefundable application fee of $30 must be submitted. McNair scholars who apply to UF are eligible for a graduate school application fee waiver. The ISE Department is offering an application fee waiver to all prospective international applicants to their PhD program for Fall 2026.
Application Materials
A complete application packet includes several key documents and information. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure all materials are complete, accurate, and submitted by the application deadline.
Statement of Purpose
Applicants must write a statement explaining why the chosen certificate or master’s degree will help achieve personal and/or professional goals and how the specific graduate program will enable them to reach those goals. While the UF Admissions online application requires a short statement of purpose, some departments prefer a slightly longer statement of intellectual purpose. For example, the Department of Gender, Sexualities, and Women’s Studies suggests a statement of approximately two pages, single-spaced, detailing the applicant's background, reasons for pursuing a graduate degree in Women’s Studies, and specific topics of interest. The statement should also address long-term career plans and how they align with the research specializations of faculty members in the department.
Current Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV)
The application must include all post-high school education and employment, as well as information about ongoing international affiliations and research funding, in accordance with Florida Statute. All applicants must submit their latest resume or curriculum vitae (CV) with the application via CollegeNET.
Letters of Recommendation
Many master’s programs require letters of recommendation. For example, the UF CJC Online master’s program requires three letters of recommendation. To send a link to recommenders for submitting a letter of recommendation, applicants need to start their online application. This can be done before completing and submitting the rest of the application.

Writing Sample
Some departments require a writing sample. For example, the Department of Gender, Sexualities, and Women’s Studies requires a writing sample of up to 25 pages.

Deadlines
Meeting deadlines is crucial for admission consideration. The Department of Astronomy at UF only considers graduate applications for the Fall semester, and the deadline is for matriculation in Fall 2026. Applications received between 1/6/2026 and 3/1/2026 are considered for the Regular Deadline. Applications received by the Priority Deadline will be considered for the Spring Visit, an exclusive event for PhD applicants who have been offered admission for the upcoming fall term to spend time with ISE students, faculty and staff.

Holistic Review Process
UF CJC Online practices a holistic review admissions process. This means that the admissions committee considers a broad range of factors, including undergraduate performance, professional resume, depth of the Statement of Purpose, letters of recommendation, and standardized test performance if applicable.
Conditional Admission
Academic units may grant conditional admission to up to 10% of an incoming class. Conditional admission candidates must have all application materials submitted: a valid prior degree, admission exam scores, English test scores (if required), transcripts, statement of purpose and recommendation letters, along with records of postbaccalaureate grades or work histories of pertinent prior professional experience, if the academic unit is justifying conditional admission on the basis of either.
Conditional admission cases due to graduate admission grade point averages below 3.0, missing or unofficial test scores, and English test scores (if required) below the required minimums (6 for IELTS (6.5 Effective: Spring 2026), 80 for Internet TOEFL must have final approval from the Graduate School. Registration holds to block next-term pre-registration will remain on the records of conditionally admitted students until their first-semester grades are posted on their UF transcripts and show that they met the terms of their conditional admission.
International applicants who require additional English language training to meet the Graduate School’s English language minimum requirements may be offered English Language Institute (ELI) Conditional Admission. An offer of ELI Conditional Admission may also contain additional conditions set by an applicant’s prospective academic program. Such an offer of admission does not guarantee an applicant can enroll in graduate coursework.
Additional Information for Accepted Students
Immunization and Health Insurance
The University of Florida requires all new students to show proof of certain immunizations prior to attending UF. Students must comply with the University’s immunization and health insurance requirements. Students shall be required to show documentation of specific vaccinations or proof of immunity for Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR), Hepatitis B, and Meningitis. International students and those entering most academic health professions may have additional requirements including tuberculosis screening.
The University follows an Opt Out system where students who don’t opt out by providing documentation of adequate health insurance will be automatically enrolled in the school-sponsored plan. If a student currently has insurance, they will be required to review their insurance coverage and check that it meets the requirements set forth as comparable coverage. They will then need to submit a waiver with their policy information for verification by the end of drop/add but ideally much earlier. The charge for the school-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan will be removed once the submission is completed and verified. Once verified, the waiver is good for one year.
Computer Competency
Access to and on-going use of a computer is required for all students to complete their degree programs successfully. The University of Florida expects each student to acquire computer hardware and software appropriate to their degree program. Competency in the basic use of a computer is a requirement for graduation.

Postbaccalaureate and Non-Degree Enrollment
Postbaccalaureate study is for students who have already received a baccalaureate degree and have not been admitted to the Graduate School. Applicants must ensure that transcripts are sent to the Office of Admissions from each post-secondary institution attended. Postbaccalaureate applicants may apply for Distance Education programs. Nondegree enrollment is restricted to participants in special programs, off-campus programs, University-affiliated exchange programs, and those participants with non-degree educational objectives at UF.
Readmission
Former students who do not enroll at the university for three consecutive terms, including any summer term, must apply for readmission to the same program of their previous enrollment. All readmission applicants must meet the current admission requirements of the college or school they expect to enter. Readmission is not guaranteed and is subject to availability at the level, college, and major. Applicants must present a satisfactory record of conduct.
Special Cases
UF faculty members in tenured or tenure-accruing positions normally may not pursue graduate degrees from this institution. Exceptions are made for the Florida Cooperative Extension Service (IFAS) county personnel, the faculty of the P. K. Yonge Laboratory School, and University Libraries faculty.
