Unlocking Opportunities: A Guide to the University of Florida Lombardi Scholarship Requirements
The University of Florida (UF) provides various scholarship opportunities to attract and support talented students. Among these, the John V. Lombardi Scholarship stands out as a prestigious award for incoming freshmen who demonstrate exceptional qualities. This article delves into the specifics of the Lombardi Scholarship, its requirements, and other related scholarship programs at UF.
John V. Lombardi Scholarship: Recognizing Excellence
The University of Florida offers the distinguished John V. Lombardi Scholarship to a select group of incoming students who demonstrate exceptional intellectual curiosity, creativity, civic responsibility, and leadership potential. Named after Dr. John V. Lombardi, one of the University of Florida's most charismatic and popular presidents, who led the university during the 1990s, a period of unprecedented achievement and growth. His visionary leadership and indomitable spirit instilled in students, faculty and alumni an aspiration to fulfill their greatest potential. During his tenure, the size and quality of the student body grew to even higher levels, faculty productivity increased, national rankings steadily improved, research funding doubled, and the university's endowment soared to almost $500 million. By the turn of the century, the university had ascended to the top tier of public research universities - a testament to the legacy of John V. Lombardi. The Scholarship was established in 2002 to honor Dr. John V. Lombardi.
Lombardi Scholars receive a four-year scholarship, along with four fully funded summer enrichment experiences. These include opportunities for study abroad and a weeklong domestic leadership retreat, designed to enhance both academic achievement and personal growth.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria
The John V. Lombardi Scholarship targets incoming students who have demonstrated exceptional intellectual curiosity, creativity, civic responsibility, and leadership potential. The selection process incorporates the same holistic approach used in admissions decisions. Scholarships are awarded based on grades and standardized test scores, as well as extracurricular involvement, leadership, community service, and your personal essay. Our incoming freshman class is always outstanding in all of the above-mentioned areas, which makes awarding scholarships challenging! With scholarships limited and no pre-set criteria, students with similar test scores, grades, extracurricular activities, and more may receive different scholarship decisions. UF does not send notifications to students not selected for scholarships. If you do not hear from us, this means we were not able to offer you a scholarship.
Enrichment Experiences: A Key Component
Opportunity: Summer enrichment experiences offer scholars the tools they need to achieve their goals. Study abroad and leadership training programs develop intercultural skills, individual leadership styles, and adaptability. Summer enrichment travel challenges scholars mentally and physically, building resilience and fostering collaboration.

Stamps Scholars Program: A Prestigious Partnership
The Honors Program is proud to partner with the Stamps Scholars Program to offer prestigious four-year scholarships to outstanding undergraduate students. Class cohorts of 20 scholars (10 Stamps Scholars and 10 John V. Lombardi Scholars) allow for meaningful connections between students, providing a “small school” experience at a top-ranked research 1 university. Stamps Scholars are provided with opportunities to explore their academic passions while enhancing their leadership and cultural skills through enriching summer experiences as part of a collaborative cohort. The University of Florida partners with the Stamps Scholars Program to award multi-year scholarships to help driven and talented student leaders achieve their education and life goals. Stamps Scholars pursue their educational interests while developing their leadership skills with merit based financial aid including enrichment funds that can be used for study abroad, cultural exchanges, research projects and other educational experiences. Scholars travel together in cohorts of one or two classes, building relationships within the Preeminent Scholars community. Summer enrichment experiences are mandatory. Scholars come together at formal and informal events throughout the academic year, including welcome and graduation receptions with Honors Program faculty and UF administration.
Supporting First-Generation Students: The Machen Florida Opportunity Scholars Program
The Machen Florida Opportunity Scholars program provides financial resources and individual support with the primary goal of graduating first generation, low-income undergraduate students. By addressing systemic barriers and challenges, the Machen Florida Opportunity Scholars program provides a full grant and scholarship financial aid package as well as a comprehensive support program to ensure students thrive at UF. To be eligible, students must first be admitted into the University of Florida as a first-year student. Upon completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), students are invited to complete the MFOS Supplemental Form if they meet the initial eligibility criteria.

Important Considerations
- Holistic Review: UF employs a holistic review process for scholarships, considering grades, test scores, extracurricular activities, leadership, community service, and personal essays.
- Limited Availability: Scholarships at UF are very limited in availability. Because there are no pre-set criteria, students with similar test scores, grades, extracurricular activities, etc. may receive different scholarship decisions.
- No Matching or Appeals: UF cannot match offers made by other colleges or universities, and there is no scholarship appeal process.
- Priority Deadlines: To be considered for merit-based scholarships, students must apply by the priority deadline and receive their decision on the February Decision Day. There is no separate application for our merit-based scholarships, as all admitted freshman students who apply by the priority deadline and receive their decision on our February Decision Day are considered for these scholarships. There are no minimum criteria for these, as students are evaluated based on the strength of that year's applicant pool. Generally, recipients are above the middle fifty percent of our admitted student profile.
- Predicted Awards: Scholarships are predicted awards based on enrollment for the upcoming year. You will need to submit the tuition deposit to confirm your enrollment.
- Bright Futures Application: Students must apply for the Bright Futures scholarship during their senior year in high school. Florida PrePaid will apply first to tuition due. Then, any other funds awarded (Presidential Scholarship, grants, loans) apply to the student's account balance with the Bursar's office, followed by final qualifying Bright Futures award amounts.
