University of Florida Transfer Requirements: A Comprehensive Guide

Transferring to the University of Florida (UF) can be a rewarding path for students seeking to join a vibrant academic community. UF seeks diverse students who will be UF’s future community of leaders, learners, and thinkers. This article provides a detailed overview of the transfer requirements, application process, and important considerations for prospective transfer students. A sharp rise in selectivity at the University of Florida in the 2020s has made the goal of becoming a Gator more difficult to achieve than ever before.

General Transfer Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for transfer admission to UF, applicants must meet several minimum requirements:

Completed AA Degree or 60+ Transferable Credits: Applicants must have a completed Associate of Arts (AA) degree from a Florida College System institution or at least 60 transferable semester credit hours from a regionally accredited institution. At least 60 semester credits of academic work exclusive of occupational courses(i.e., 60 transferable semester credits from a regionally accredited institution, or an A.A.
Foreign Language Competency: Show competency in a foreign language. It is preferable that students have two years of foreign language instruction or be able to document an equivalent level of proficiency.
Minimum GPA: Have a minimum 2.0 overall GPA and a minimum 2.0 GPA from your last attended institution, as calculated by UF. According to the university, the minimum GPA required for consideration is 2.0. Certain programs may recommend a higher minimum.
Major Course Requirements: Have completed their major’s stated Course Requirements. Have completed or will complete any specific intended major requirements

Application Deadlines and Timeline

Understanding the application deadlines is crucial for a successful transfer.

Application Deadlines: Applicants should apply at least six months before the term they plan to enter. Applications can be submitted up to one year in advance.
Summer B and Fall Application: The application deadline for Summer B and Fall 2026 is February 15, 2026.
Spring Application: The University of Florida transfer deadline for fall applicants is May 1. Spring applicants apply by September 15. Summer applicants have a deadline of February 15.
Notification Dates: University of Florida transfer decisions are made by June 15 for those seeking to start in the fall. The spring notification date is November 15. Summer semester transfers will be notified by April 1.

The Application Process

The University of Florida transfer application process is simple and straightforward. It will take about 30 minutes to complete your application. If you need to take a break for any reason, you can save it and return to complete the application later. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Apply Online: Prospective transfers from Florida public colleges can refer to the Fla. Virtual Campus Common Prerequisite Manual for state university transfer prerequisite course requirements. Transfer applicants who meet UF minimum admission requirements will be referred to the appropriate UF college for an admission decision. Prospective transfer students should also visit the FLVC A.A.

Submit Transcripts:
- Submit a transcript from each institution attended, regardless of the length of attendance or credit earned.
- For the purpose of initial review, the Office of Admissions accepts unofficial transcripts. Applicants may upload unofficial transcripts within the academic background section of their application, or if not available at the time of application, through their application status page at a later date.
- Applicants who receive an offer of admission should arrange to have official transcripts sent to the UF Office of Admissions from each postsecondary institution attended.
- If you attended UF as your postsecondary institution, you do not have to order a transcript from the Office of the University Registrar.
- Official transcripts can be sent to UF in two ways: paper transcript received by UF in a sealed envelope or electronic transcripts sent from your institution directly to UF, which can save up to two weeks’ response time. UF accepts electronic transcripts through FASTER, Parchment, National Student Clearing House, ScribbleSoft, e-Scrip Safe, Credential Solutions, SCOIR or Transcripts Plus.
- All academic credentials become property of the university. They will not be returned to you or forwarded to a third party.
Lower Division Transfer Applicants: The state of Florida requires that all lower division transfer applicants have at least a 2.5 (C) academic cumulative GPA from high school. As a lower division transfer applicant, your high school GPA will still be evaluated, but we will also evaluate your college coursework. Competitive lower division transfer applicants to UF Online typically have a 3.0 GPA or higher at the college level. Lower division transfer applicants who graduated high school less than 5 years ago will need to submit test scores to the university as part of the admissions process. Lower division transfer applicants must submit test scores from the SAT, ACT and/or CLT. UF has no test preference. We will superscore (take the highest scores for each subsection) to create the highest possible total score. In addition, lower division transfer applicants with 30 or more transferable college credits should have completed some of the prerequisite courses for their major of interest prior to their first intended term of enrollment in UF Online. The closer a student is to earning 60 credits, the more prerequisites are expected for admission as a lower division applicant.

Understanding Prerequisite Courses

Prerequisite courses are courses that must be complete PRIOR to enrollment at UF.

Completing Prerequisites: On the Academic Background section of the application, there is a “Current Courses in Progress” segment. In this section, please indicate any prerequisite courses you are currently enrolled in or identify the semester in which you expect to enroll in the prerequisite course. Transfer applicants who have not completed all prerequisite courses at the time of their application must send updated transcripts to UF once those prerequisite courses are complete, and/or when their AA degree is earned.
AP/IB/AICE Credit: Yes, the BHS-HES program will accept AP/IB/AICE credit for any prerequisite course except APK2105C Physiology. It is important to understand however that AP/IB/AICE credit may not satisfy prerequisite requirements for graduate school, so you may consider enrolling in a course for which you have earned AP/IB/AICE credit if the graduate programs you apply to require you to have letter grades for their prerequisite courses.
Letter Grades: Competitive applicants have letter grades for at least three of the four prerequisite courses finalized at the time of application. Letter grades for at least three of the four prerequisite courses (preferred).
Health Professions: We heavily consider how far a student is appropriately tracking for their intended health profession. This is to ensure transfer student success with balanced academics. Students having appropriate courses for their intended health profession prior to admission avoids them from having to finish their prerequisites at another institution after graduation through non-degree enrollment or a postbaccalaureate program; completing pre-health prerequisite courses after graduation may have financial implications.

Specific Prerequisite Considerations

*Students in the Pre-Rehabilitation track can complete BSC1005 or BSC2005 and lab in place of BSC1010/BSC2010, but BSC1010/BSC2010 is strongly recommended. Students applying to the Applied Brain Science or Preprofessional specializations must have BSC1010 or BSC2010. Labs are required for all specializations. **CHM1045 or CHM2045 may substitute the Physiology requirement only for students applying to the Preprofessional specialization.

Holistic Review and Strengthening Your Application

GPA: While there are minimum GPA requirements, competitive applicants usually average a 3.5 or higher overall GPA and prerequisite GPA.
Personal Essay: What are the core skills and knowledge you hope to acquire by completing a degree in this major and how do you plan to apply these when you graduate? Please provide any other information about yourself that you feel will help this college make an admission decision. This may include work, research, volunteer activities or other experiences pertaining to the degree program.
Addressing Academic Concerns: If there is something that you think would be helpful for the admissions committee to know, then include an explanation with your application. The admissions committee will consider the information in the context of the consistency of your performance in different semesters. If you are having medical or interpersonal issues affecting your academic performance, the most important thing that you can do is get the right help. We encourage you to take responsibility to address any issues that are causing academic concerns. In addition, sometimes students have learning disabilities that are not diagnosed until college.

Transferring with an AA Degree from a Florida College System Institution

Applicants seeking to transfer directly to UF from a Florida public college after receiving an Associate of Arts degree. (All other transfer applicants and applicants for readmission should refer to Transfer Applicants without A.A. The A.A. is highly valued. In a recent cycle, 72% of accepted transfer students had already completed an associate’s degree. Two-thirds came directly from a community college. Clearly, the best way to transfer to U of F is to excel at a school in the Florida College System (formerly known as the Florida Community College System).

Transfer Options for High School Students with an AA Degree

Under the Florida Board of Governors Admission Regulation 6.005 if you are obtaining a high school diploma and an associate of arts (A.A.) degree through dual enrollment from an institution within the Florida College System or State University System, you have two options for admission consideration as a first-time-in-college (FTIC) student.

The recommended path for consideration is completing a freshman application and then going through the freshman process (completing the STARS (formerly SSAR) and submitting your SAT/ACT/CLT scores) and receiving a freshman decision. If we cannot offer you admission through that process, then we will ask if you would like to be considered as a transfer student and create a transfer application on your behalf so you would have both avenues available for admission consideration.

The other path is being considered only as a transfer student. This path does not consider test scores in the admissions review but the colleges will be looking at the prerequisites needed for your intended major and your college GPA to evaluate competitiveness. The opportunity for transfer students to change their major after admission is extremely limited so you need to consider your choice of major carefully. Transfer admissions are reviewed on a different timeline so your decision may not be available before May 1st.

If you are admitted under the FL BOG 6.005 regulation and do not intend to receive your A.A. degree, you must notify the Office of Admissions immediately. If you do not receive your A.A.

Transfer Acceptance Rate

While the first-year acceptance rate has plummeted below 30% (and often below 25%) in recent years, the UF transfer acceptance rate has remained more inviting. While still an extremely competitive process, this school extends offers to 2,000 to 3,000 qualified transfer applicants each year. For entry in the fall of 2023, 5,579 students applied for transfer admission and 2,666 were successful. This means that the University of Florida transfer acceptance rate is 47.7%.

What if You Are Not Admitted?

We strongly encourage you to have a back-up plan; we generally recommend that transfer students apply to other schools that offer their majors of interest. Because of our early application deadline and decision release, denied students can apply to another major at UF that follows a May 1st deadline if they meet admissions requirements for it. If I am not admitted to UF under PHHP, can I transfer under another major and then switch over?Due to seat availability, transfer students must apply directly to a PHHP major.

Important Considerations for Admitted Students

Timely Graduation: Transfer students are expected to meet timely graduation within four full time Fall/Spring semesters (e.g., if transfer students are admitted in Fall 2026, then they must graduate Spring 2028).
Extending Your Time at UF: If I am admitted, is there a way to stay at UF more than two years, especially if I am a high school AA opt-in applicant? Can I add a minor or dual degree to extend my time?Transfer students are expected to meet timely graduation within four full time Fall/Spring semesters. Certain circumstances may warrant petitioning for an extension, including an approved medical or university withdrawal at UF that affected an entire semester. We do not allow students to add minors or other academic programs for the sole purpose of extending their graduation timeline.
