University of Miami Basketball: A Season of Highs and Lows
The University of Miami Hurricanes men's basketball team experienced a rollercoaster of a season in 2023-24, marked by both promising highs and disappointing lows. From a strong start that saw them ranked among the nation's best to a disheartening finish, the season was a testament to the unpredictable nature of college basketball.
The 2023-24 Season: A Tale of Two Halves
The 2023-24 Miami Hurricanes team represented the University of Miami. The Hurricanes began the season with a blaze, posting an impressive 11-2 record in their initial 13 contests. Signature wins during this stretch included victories over Georgia and Kansas State at the Baha Mar Bahamas Hoops Championship, coupled with conference triumphs against Notre Dame and the then-sixteenth-ranked Clemson. This early success propelled them to a ranking as high as eighth in the nation, before a loss to Kentucky in the ACC-SEC Challenge altered their trajectory.
However, their fortunes took a turn for the worse as they struggled to maintain their early momentum. The Hurricanes lost four of their next five ACC games, with their sole victory coming against Virginia Tech. While they managed to win three of the subsequent four games, they concluded the season with a ten-game losing streak. During this difficult stretch, they faced three ranked teams, suffering narrow defeats to third-ranked North Carolina by just three points, eighth-ranked Duke, and again to North Carolina, who was ranked ninth at the time.
Ultimately, the Hurricanes concluded the 2023-24 season with a 15-17 record, including a 6-14 mark in ACC play, placing them fourteenth in the conference standings. As the fourteenth seed in the ACC tournament, they were defeated by eleventh seed Boston College in the First Round. As a result, they did not receive invitations to either the NCAA tournament or the NIT.
Reflecting on the 2022-23 Season
In contrast to the 2023-24 season, the Hurricanes enjoyed a successful 2022-23 campaign. The Hurricanes finished the 2022-23 season 29-8 and 15-5 in ACC play, finishing in a tie for first place and clinching a share of the regular season title. This marked the team's second ACC regular season title in program history, the first being in 2013. As the first seed in the ACC tournament, they received a bye to the Quarterfinals, where they defeated ninth seed Wake Forest before losing to fourth seed and eventual champion Duke in the Semifinals. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament where they were the fifth seed in the Midwest Region.
