A wealth of benefits and resources are available to alumni, fostering a lifelong relationship with the university and fellow Wolverines. This article explores the advantages of the University of Michigan Alumni Credit Card and the Alumni Association, providing a comprehensive guide to maximizing your alumni experience.

The Alumni Association: A Lifelong Connection
Based in Ann Arbor, the Alumni Association comprises graduates from all three U-M campuses. It offers a variety of benefits, including career services, sporting events, travel programs, and networking opportunities. While some benefits require membership in the Alumni Association, the rewards can be significant.
Membership Options: From Annual to Lifetime
For the first full year after graduation, you are eligible for a free membership with the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan. After this initial period, you can choose between yearly or lifetime memberships, each with associated fees.
A lifelong connection to Michigan doesn’t begin at graduation. If you want to start small, try an Annual Membership. These discounted rates are available to current U-M students who are not in their final semester prior to graduation. If you are in your final semester, check out our recent grad pricing. Prices and benefits are subject to change. There’s no reason to wait. When you join as a Life Member, your benefits start that very minute. Even after you graduate, you’re a member for life.

The University of Michigan Credit Card: Rewarding Your Wolverine Loyalty
The University of Michigan Credit Card is a good all-around credit card for supporters of the Wolverines who have good credit or better (700+ credit score) and want to earn cash back rewards. This card offers an opportunity to showcase your school pride while earning rewards on everyday purchases.
Key Benefits of the Michigan Credit Card
- Initial Bonus: The Michigan Card offers an initial bonus of $200, along with pretty good ongoing rewards: 1 - 6% cash back. You can get this bonus by spending $1,000 in the first 90 days your account is open. For context, the average cash back credit card bonus is $236, according to WalletHub research.
- Cash Back Rewards: The card offers a tiered cash back system, allowing you to earn more on specific categories. During the first year, cardholders earn 6% cash back in their preferred spending category and 2% at grocery stores and wholesale clubs, up to a combined $2,500 in purchases per quarter across those categories. All other eligible purchases earn 1% cash back. After the first year, the cash back rate for the preferred category drops to 3%.
- No Annual Fee: This card does not charge an annual fee, making it a cost-effective option for long-term use. You won’t find an annual fee on any other college or university credit cards, but that can’t be said for cards that aren’t affiliated with institutions of higher learning. Market wide, the average credit card offer charges an annual fee of roughly $27.85.
- Introductory APR: The University of Michigan Credit Card offers 0% for 15 months on new purchases, along with 0% for 15 months on balance transfers.
- BofA banking bonus If you qualify for Bank of America Preferred Rewards, you can get extra cash back on purchases made with this card.
Potential Drawbacks
- Foreign Transaction and Balance Transfer Fees: The UM Credit Card adds a surcharge of 3% to purchases processed internationally. Balances transferred from other credit cards grow by 3%.
- High Regular APR: The rate you will be assigned, if approved for an account, depends on your overall creditworthiness. The average credit card offer currently has a regular APR of 22.35%.
- Credit Score Requirement: We recommend a credit score of 700 or higher for the best approval odds. You will also need a steady income, with enough left over after existing monthly obligations to afford bill payments. If you don’t know your credit score, you can check it for free.
- Limited Michigan-Specific Benefits: Unfortunately, school-specific imagery is about all that really ties this particular credit card to UM.
Is the University of Michigan Credit Card Right for You?
The Michigan Credit Card is a solid choice for Wolverines with good credit who want to earn cash back rewards and show their school spirit. The lack of an annual fee makes it a low-risk option, and the initial bonus and tiered cash back system can provide significant value.
