The Michigan Wolverines Sports Network: A Comprehensive Overview

The Michigan Wolverines Sports Network is an extensive American radio network, encompassing 46 radio stations, dedicated to broadcasting University of Michigan Wolverines football and men's basketball games. Serving the Metro Detroit area, WCSX (94.7 FM) and WMGC-FM (105.1 FM) function as the network's flagship stations.

Historical Overview of the Network's Flagship Stations

For a considerable period, WJR/Detroit held the position of the network's flagship station for Michigan football since 1976 and men's basketball since 1997. During instances where Detroit Tigers baseball games took precedence, sister station CKLW served as a backup.

In a surprising turn of events in October 2005, WJR revealed a new agreement to broadcast Michigan State football and men's basketball, thus ending its long-standing association with Michigan. This announcement caught the Michigan athletic department, including director Bill Martin, off guard, who stated that the school had acted "in good faith" throughout negotiations with the station.

Subsequently, Michigan entered into a new five-year agreement with CBS Radio and CHUM Limited (later CTVglobemedia), the owners of WOMC/Detroit and CKLW/Windsor, respectively.

Key Figures in Broadcasting

Prior to the commencement of the Michigan Wolverines Football game on September 4, 2021, play-by-play announcer Jim Brandstatter and analyst Dan Dierdorf announced their retirements.

IMG College VP of Broadcasting Chris Ferris expressed enthusiasm about having "two great Michigan men who are great broadcasters."

Financial Aspects

The University of Michigan entered into an agreement guaranteeing the school $7.4 million in advertising revenue for its football and men's basketball radio broadcasts. Furthermore, the University of Michigan athletic department secured a marketing and media rights deal with IMG College, projected to generate at least $86 million over the 12-year duration of the contract. IMG College had previously acquired Host Communications, which had managed Michigan's radio broadcast rights for the preceding seven years.

Expansion to FM Radio

Michigan Football expanded its reach in Detroit via FM radio through HD Radio technology. WXYT-FM, which already broadcast WWJ-AM (950) on its HD-2 channel, launched an HD-3 channel featuring a simulcast of WXYT-AM (1270), which had recently transitioned to an all-talk format.

New Broadcast Agreement

The University of Michigan Athletic Department, in partnership with Learfield’s Michigan Sports Properties and Beasley Media Group Detroit, announced a multi-year broadcast agreement, designating 94.7 WCSX-FM as the new flagship radio home for the Michigan Wolverines, beginning with the 2025 football season.

WCSX-FM will provide comprehensive coverage, airing all football, men’s basketball, and ice hockey games, with select women’s basketball games broadcast on 105.1 The Bounce (WMGC-FM). The partnership will also include coaches’ shows, Athletics features, and exclusive interviews.
