The origins of University of Michigan Health-West can be traced back to the 1940s when Louis M. Monger, an osteopathic physician, envisioned bringing osteopathic care to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Monger, along with a group of like-minded osteopathic physicians, pooled their resources to establish a hospital dedicated to holistic care. They purchased the former residence of the bishop of the Diocese of Grand Rapids, located at 1225 Lake Drive in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Nearly $50,000 was raised to equip the hospital.
Early Years and Relocation
The hospital's first patient was Louisa Porcelli, wife of the hospital's Secretary-Treasurer James V. Porcelli, DO, who gave birth to their first child in the nearly finished hospital. Initially equipped with only 28 beds, the Grand Rapids Osteopathic Hospital relocated in 1957 to 1919 Boston SE Grand Rapids, MI.
Expansion and the Need for Growth
By the late 1970s, the hospital had expanded to include over 200 beds. In the 1990s, Metropolitan Hospital sought to expand further. However, its 17-acre property in Grand Rapids was landlocked, with residents opposing any expansion efforts.
Creation of Metro Health Village
On March 12, 2001, the hospital announced its intention to purchase 150 acres in Wyoming, MI, to create a "health care village." This decision was made after years of being unable to expand its Grand Rapids location. The new location, near U.S. 131 and I-196, was strategically situated in the growing suburban area outside of Grand Rapids.

In 2009, the University of Michigan Health System and the Metro Health Cancer Center began a partnership for cancer treatment. This collaboration paved the way for a deeper affiliation.
