University of Milwaukee Dorms: A Comprehensive Review

Choosing where to live is a crucial part of the college experience. For students attending the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), on-campus dormitories offer a convenient and community-oriented living option. This article provides a comprehensive review of UWM dorms, drawing upon student experiences to offer insights into the pros and cons of living on campus.

Convenience and Location

One of the most significant advantages of living in UWM dorms is their prime location. Situated in the heart of campus, dorms like Sandburg Hall offer easy access to classrooms, university offices, and the athletic center. The proximity to academic buildings is a major draw for students, especially freshmen, as it eliminates the need for long commutes and allows for more time dedicated to studying and campus involvement. Moreover, the dorms are easily accessible by public transport, making it convenient for students to explore the city and travel to and from campus. Sandburg Hall was so convenient as a freshman and is so close to every single building on UWM's campus.

Community and Social Life

Living in the dorms provides an excellent opportunity to meet new people and build lasting friendships. Many students find that their dorm becomes a central hub for socializing, studying, and hanging out with friends. The community at Sandburg is vibrant. It becomes a place where students actually want to hang out, study, and spend time with friends. UWM dorms foster a sense of community through various events and activities organized by resident assistants (RAs) and the university. These events provide residents with opportunities to connect with one another, fostering a supportive and inclusive living environment. Sandburg hall allows you to join many on campus activities all while being in the center of the campus. It's easier to meet new people here too.

Accommodation Styles and Amenities

UWM offers a variety of dorm styles to suit different preferences and needs. Most on-campus residence halls include singles, doubles, and suites. Floor plans and dimensions vary from residence hall to residence hall. Sandburg Hall, in particular, is known for its suite-style living arrangements, where students share a bathroom with a small number of suitemates (3-4 people) rather than an entire floor.

Suite-Style Living

The suite-style dorms are amazing, because you get your own bathroom (that you only share with 3-4 other people) rather than having communal bathrooms. Sharing a bathroom with a smaller group is often preferred by students as it allows for easier maintenance of cleanliness and greater convenience. My favorite thing about our dorms are the private bathrooms each suite has. I love Sandburg hall is suite living, I like only sharing a bathroom with my 2 suitemates instead of a whole floor of people. It makes maintaining cleanliness easier and is more convenient to use than if there was a communal bathroom.

Common Areas

In addition to living spaces, UWM dorms offer a range of amenities to enhance the student living experience. These may include common kitchens, movie theaters, and study areas. Each tower shares one kitchen except for east tower since they have their own kitchens. Sandburg has a movie theater on the first floor.

Food and Dining Options

For students living in UWM dorms, meal plans are typically required. Food is provided at the cafeteria and students can have food as many as they want when the cafeteria is open. The cafeteria offers a variety of options, from snacks to decent tasting meals. The food options available were always actually yummy and they had gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options, too!

Cafeteria Experience

The cafeteria experience can vary. Some students appreciate the convenience and variety of food options, while others find the food repetitive after a while due to the lack of a rotating menu. The food service is okay when you first move here but after a while you get tired of the food due to the lack of a rotating menu. However, the cleanliness of these areas could sometimes be a complete mess.

Sandburg Cafe

Sandburg Cafe, the main food service in Sandburg, has been closed all year except for healthy option food.

Alternative Dining

Sandburg also has limited food options on campus but its close enough to walk to other stores and fast-food places.

Cleanliness and Maintenance

The cleaning staff does a lot of hard work because there are students who don’t pick up after themselves, but the building stays very clean and managed. Overall, Sandburg Hall was not bad at all. It was clean, safe and accessible. The cafe was clean and the food was above average. Students appreciate the efforts of the cleaning staff in maintaining a clean and comfortable living environment.

Potential Drawbacks

While UWM dorms offer numerous advantages, there are also some potential drawbacks to consider.

Cost

The dorms were expensive for what you paid for. Also, students didn't like the fact they were forced to have a meal plan if they lived on campus and pay $800 just for the facilities of the dining hall even if they were using it.

Lack of Air Conditioning

Overall, I would say the biggest downside to the dorms is no AC, but the hot weather does not last long either way.

Noise Levels

Although most times it's quite there are times when it gets noisy in the halls. North is very noisy along with south tower.

Outdated Facilities

If you're not in the East Tower, everything is outdated and the bathroom shower had mold in it. Also when I moved in, my carpet had a crusty white stain on it, which is still there to this day.

Specific Dorm Reviews

Sandburg Hall

Sandburg is centrally located on campus and offers suite-style living with private bathrooms shared by a small group of suitemates. Sandburg East was a pretty good dorm. Nicely renovated and quiet over there. Sandburg Hall was so convenient as a freshman. It is so close to every single building on UWM's campus, and you get to meet so many people just in the dorms. The suite style dorms are amazing, because you get your own bathroom (that you only share with 3-4 other people) rather than having communal bathrooms. The employees of Sandburg are always so nice and friendly. Honestly, I really liked the food options they had available - they were always actually yummy and they had gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options, too! They always had cool events for each floor and the whole building to participate in for residents to get to know each other!

North Tower

North is very noisy along with south tower. North tower is being redone right now but the other dorms are pretty decent.

East Tower

East tower have their own kitchens. I loved living in East.

South Tower

South tower is more upgraded.

West Tower

Its a but old school in west tower.
