Federal Work-Study Program
The Federal Work-Study program provides financial assistance to full-time, registered students who demonstrate financial need as determined by their FAFSA. Eligible students can choose from a wide array of positions across various departments, including:
- Residential Life: Assist with the management and operation of residence halls, fostering a positive living environment for fellow students.
- Athletics: Support the university's athletic programs by assisting with game day operations and other related tasks.
- Administrative Offices: Provide administrative support to various university departments, gaining valuable office experience.
Students participating in the Federal Work-Study program typically work between 6-8 hours per week, with a maximum of 20 hours per week. They are paid the minimum wage set by the State of Connecticut. It's important to note that students are not permitted to hold multiple Federal Work-Study positions.
Institutional Student Employment (Non-Federal Work-Study)
Individual offices and departments offer Institutional Student Employment opportunities to registered students. These Non-Federal Work-Study positions are paid on a weekly basis, and students can work up to 20 hours per week.
Community Work Study (CWS) Program
The Community Work Study (CWS) program connects undergraduate students with nonprofit and public organizations in the Greater New Haven area. Students are compensated through Federal Work Study funds, allowing them to earn income while contributing to the community.

Leadership and Mentoring Positions
- Orientation Team Leader (OTL): Students who want to take on a mentor role for incoming first year and transfer students should consider becoming an OTL for the Student Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR) in the Center for Student Engagement, Leadership and Orientation. This position entails leading groups of incoming students on four dates between June 10 and July 20, 2024, with some dates from mid-August to Oct. 27. OTLs also assist with events such as Charge In, Welcome Week and Family Day during the fall semester. Applications are due Feb.
- Resident Assistant (RA): Students interested in taking on a year-round leadership role can apply for the 2024 - 2025 RA position out of the Office of Residential Life. This entails living in, interacting with and leading students in a residence hall section. The application, is due Dec. 6 in Westside Hall’s first floor lounge.
President's Public Service Fellowship
Students who want to be paid while working for a local nonprofit organization can apply for the President’s Public Service Fellowship out of the Dean of Students Office. Students who apply and are accepted into the highly selective program are paid to spend 11 weeks over the summer as leaders in New Haven nonprofits.
Student Game Day Worker
Students who are interested in the university’s athletics and want to get a behind-the-scenes look at games can apply to be a Student Game Day Worker in the university’s Charger Athletics office. This 20-hour-a-week position is open to current students. The application is due April 30, 2024.
Career Development Resources
The University of New Haven's Career Development Center (CDC) offers a range of resources to help students find on-campus and off-campus employment opportunities. Students can utilize the Handshake career management system to view top matches for their skills and interests, post and manage internship applications, full-time or part-time openings for free on Handshake.

- Information Sessions: Provide a general or club/organization-specific information session on campus. Consider conducting one in advance of interviews to meet students in an informal setting prior to one-on-one interviews.
- Corporate Tours: Invite a University of New Haven student organization or group to your facility. Provide a tour of various departments or areas and provide lunch. Don’t forget to include your senior officials. The University of New Haven Career Development Center will assist efforts to arrange a tour.
- On-Campus Recruiting: Reserve a table in the campus center to provide general information about your company to students. Students want and need to find out more about companies and various career fields.
- Employer Shadowing: What better way to educate them than for you to offer students the opportunity to shadow employers at your company for a day. School breaks are optimal but individual student schedules may offer flexibility.
- Practice Interviews: Conduct practice interviews with students. Let us know when you can come; we’ll book a room and create a schedule for you. Let us know if you will conduct general interviews or if you prefer to restrict your interviews to a specific major.
- Resume Critiques: Spend a day or a half-day critiquing résumés for our students. Let us know if you will conduct general interviews or if you prefer to restrict your résumé critiques to a specific major. We’ll provide the room, ink pens and students.
- Networking Events: Participate in, or host a networking event for students and alumni on your site or ours.
- Academic Projects: Work with closely University faculty and students on an academic project. Ask us, and we’ll connect you with the right folks.
- Partnership Strategy: Meet with a CDC staff member to discuss a partnership strategy for your organization.
- Expertise Sharing: Present on topics such as interviewing skills, internship/job search strategies, workplace professionalism, and others.
