University of North Florida Engineering Programs: Shaping Future Innovators
The University of North Florida (UNF), a public research university in Jacksonville, Florida, is part of the State University System of Florida. UNF is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate, masters, and doctorate degrees. Its campus comprises 1,300 acres amid a natural preserve on Jacksonville's Southside. Established in 1965, UNF began offering classes in 1972, initially as an upper-division college before admitting freshmen in 1984. UNF is organized into six colleges, five of which offer undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including doctoral degree programs, with noted business, coastal biology, nursing, nutrition, and music programs.
The College of Computing, Engineering, and Construction (CCEC) at UNF is dedicated to preparing students for professional responsibilities and creative achievement in the fields of Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Science, Information Technology, Electrical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering, and Construction Management. The College is composed of three academic units: the School of Computing, the School of Engineering, and the Department of Construction Management.
College of Computing, Engineering, and Construction (CCEC)
The College of Computing, Engineering, and Construction (CCEC) prepares students for professional responsibilities and creative achievement in the fields of Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Science, Information Technology, Electrical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering and Construction Management. UNF is the space between who you were and who you’ll become.
General Requirements and Admission Criteria
General Education requirements for engineering students differ from other majors. A grade of "C" or higher is required in all Engineering prerequisite courses. Additionally, the engineering majors are selective admission majors. Students must meet the following admission criteria with a minimum grade of C prior to officially being admitted to the major: MAC2311 Calculus 1, PHY2048C Calc-based Physics I, and CHM2045+L Gen Chemistry I + Lab.

Students may take no more than 6 credit hours (UNF courses only) at either 3000 or 4000 level from Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Computing, Civil Engineering, or Electrical Engineering to count towards technical elective credit hours. A maximum of 12 credit hours of graduate level course work can be taken while in undergraduate status and counted towards a graduate degree, but a maximum of 6 credit hours of graduate level course work may be used towards technical electives at the undergraduate level. No additional hours should be necessary. If necessary, select additional courses to attain a total of 120 hours.
Computer Science Program
This program is modeled according to the recommendations of the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) and the IEEE-CS (Computer Society of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers). It focuses on studying the theoretical foundations of the computing field and system-level programming. Students study the intricacies and design principals of sophisticated computing systems such as compilers, operating systems, algorithm analysis and design, and artificial intelligence. Graduates of the program will be prepared to create new technologies that apply to a wide variety of application areas.
Data Science Program
The Data Science program has a primary emphasis on studying methods for managing and analyzing large datasets. It also has a significant component of math and science courses. Graduates of the program will be prepared to gather, manipulate, transform, and analyze data to informing decision making.
Advanced Manufacturing
Advanced Manufacturing (AM) is concerned with materials processes and systems used in the synthesis and production of engineered products. Advanced Manufacturing topics range from traditional methods of fabrication to advanced modeling of automated systems.
Electrical Engineering Program
Electrical engineers harness electrical energy for the benefit of humankind. Employment opportunities range over product design, development, manufacturing, sales, management, teaching, and research. Employers include industrial companies, consulting firms, and government agencies and non-governmental organizations. Electrical Engineering at UNF offers an ABET accredited BS degree, as well as Master's degrees.

Information Systems Program
This program follows the curriculum recommendations of the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP). The Information Systems students study the development of computer software applications to meet business needs. The curriculum of this program focuses on courses related to application programming, database design, Internet programming technologies, data analytics, and systems analysis and design.
Information Science Program
This program follows the curriculum recommendations of the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP). The Information Science students study the development of computer software applications to meet the needs of a variety of organizations; thus, this major requires a minor (public health and criminal justices are examples of possible minors). This program's curriculum focuses on the development of software systems, including application programming, database design, Internet programming technologies, data analytics, and systems analysis and design. This program has a primary emphasis on cybersecurity and the administration of computing systems.
Mechanical Engineering Program
Mechanical engineering is concerned with energy and its transformations and the design of objects and structures that move. Mechanical engineers are responsible for conceiving, designing, modeling, manufacturing, testing, and marketing devices such as engines and energy systems, machines, and robotics, among countless other devices. Typical careers involve product design, development, manufacturing, sales, management, teaching, and research. Employers include industrial companies, consulting firms, and government agencies and non-governmental organizations. Mechanical Engineering at UNF offers an ABET accredited BS degree, as well as Master's degrees.
Civil Engineering Program
Civil engineers design the built environment - the structures, roads, water supply systems, and much more - that surrounds us. The profession is broad and encompasses several technical areas including structures, transportation, geotechnics, water resources, coastal, and environmental protection. Employment opportunities are plentiful in design, construction, management, teaching, and research. Employers include consulting firms, industrial companies, and government agencies and non-governmental organizations. A graduate of this program can expect to find employment in the residential, commercial, heavy civil, or industrial construction industry. Accelerated Programs
Admission to the accelerated program allows students to register for graduate-level courses while an undergraduate student but does not grant automatic admission into the graduate program. Director: Alan Harris, Ph.D.

University Life and Resources
UNF offers a vibrant campus life with over 200 clubs and organizations, an active student government, and Greek life. The student-run newspaper, The Spinnaker, is published monthly. The John A. Delaney Student Union, which opened in 2009, houses a bookstore, restaurants, game room, auditorium, art gallery, ballroom, bank, and amphitheater. It also hosts UNF Student Government, The Spinnaker, Spinnaker Television, Spinnaker Radio, the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life, the LGBT Resource Center, and other student organizations.
The UNF Eco-Adventure Program allows students to use the miles of nature trails and multiple lakes on campus for canoeing, kayaking, and catch-and-release fishing.
Rankings and Recognition
U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks UNF among the top universities nationally. The Coggin College of Business has also been recognized by the Princeton Review.
