University of Technology, Jamaica: A History of Innovation and Progress

The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech, Jamaica), located in Kingston, stands as a prominent public institution with a strong emphasis on science and technology. Since its inception, UTech, Jamaica has been dedicated to providing practical knowledge and preparing students for the workforce. From Institute of Technology to University Status

The journey of UTech, Jamaica began in 1958 as the Jamaica Institute of Technology. A year later, it was incorporated as the College of Arts, Science and Technology (CAST), receiving formal recognition through an Act of Parliament in 1964. In 1986, CAST was granted degree-awarding powers, leading to the establishment of a governing council and academic board. Starting with just over 50 students and four programs, UTech, Jamaica has experienced significant growth, now serving a student population of over 12,000 and solidifying its position as one of the top tertiary education institutions in Jamaica.

A Hub for Academic Excellence and Practical Training

UTech, Jamaica offers over 100 programs across various colleges and faculties, including:

  • The College of Business and Management
  • The College of Health Sciences
  • The College of Oral Health Sciences
  • The Faculty of the Built Environment
  • The Faculty of Science and Sport
  • The Faculty of Engineering and Computing
  • The Faculty of Education and Liberal Studies

Infrastructure Development and Fiscal Prudence

UTech, Jamaica has made major infrastructural and administrative improvements through the UTech Enhancement Project and other initiatives, with major contribution from the university’s own fiscal prudence. The university contributed US$16.780 million, almost matching the Government’s US$17.157 million made available through the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB). This is the largest single investment in infrastructural improvement that the institution has ever had since being upgraded to university status. The university also facilitated the construction of the Papine, Mona Sewerage Project in collaboration with NWC, from which, even the neighbouring community of Mona Heights has benefitted. Based on audited financial statements, in 2008 the university’s reserves were $1.67 billion.

Strengthening Research and Academic Offerings

UTech, Jamaica has significantly increased its research output, marking the beginning of the establishment of a research culture. This includes revitalization of the well-recognised Journal of Arts, Science and Technology (JAST). The university has also upgraded diploma and certificate courses to degrees so that in 2016/17 there was a total of 100 courses, of which 68 per cent were at the undergraduate level and 32 per cent at the graduate level.

Acknowledging Challenges and Striving for Improvement

While UTech, Jamaica has a strong academic reputation, it has faced criticisms regarding customer service in administrative areas. Some reviews mention unprofessionalism, lack of care towards students, and outdated facilities. However, the university is actively working to address these concerns and improve the overall student experience.

Leadership and Vision for the Future

The University of Technology (UTech), Jamaica’s 60th Anniversary theme “Pioneering Past; Bright Future” captures the progress of the institution over its six decades of existence. The progress continues under the able leadership.

In December 2023, Mr. Aldrick “Allie” McNab was appointed as the fifth Pro-Chancellor of UTech, Jamaica. Mr. McNab, an eminent sportsman, broadcaster, and business entrepreneur, was appointed by the Minister of Education and Youth, the Hon. Fayval Williams, MP on the recommendation of the University’s Council. The process for search and selection of Pro-Chancellor was guided by the Ordinance for the Search, selection and Appointment Procedures for the Pro-Chancellor, developed in keeping with the UTech, Jamaica Act, and modeled from the procedures established for the search and selection for the Chancellor.

The Pro-Chancellor is an Officer of the University and serves as the Chairman of the governing Council. In the absence of the Chancellor, he exercises all the functions of the Chancellor except for the conferring of degrees. His additional duties include serving as an ambassador for the University, to promote its activities in the wider community, in particular, to assist with the philanthropic activity, and fund-raising projects of the University.

Mr. McNab previously served the University of Technology, Jamaica in various capacities since 2009, including:

  • Prime Minister’s Representative on University of Technology, Jamaica’s Council from 2009 - 2011 and 2016 - up to his appointment as Pro-Chancellor on December 4, 2023.
  • Adjunct Professor, Faculty of Science and Sport (2012 to present)
  • Co-opted member, University of Technology, Jamaica Academic Board (2012 - 2020)
  • Deputy Chairman of the Council- November 2022 up to his appointment as Pro-Chancellor.

Mr. McNab holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from St. Louis University, USA and a Bachelor’s degree in Commercial Arts from Ontario College of Art, Canada. For his services to sports development in Jamaica, Mr. McNab was conferred with the Order of Distinction (OD) in 2012. His exploits were also recognized by the Diaspora and in 2014 was bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement Award. He is also a Commissioner at the Broadcasting Commission Board (2017- present) and member of the Board of the Institute of Jamaica (2020- present).
