The University of Tennessee Student Union: A Hub of History, Services, and Transformation
The University of Tennessee (UT) at Knoxville is undergoing a significant campus transformation, with a focus on modernizing student spaces to accommodate growing enrollment and enhance student life. At the heart of this transformation is the Student Union, a building that has already played a vital role in campus life and is now poised for further upgrades.
A Modern Landmark: The Student Union's Construction and Design
The current Student Union is a relatively recent addition to the UT Knoxville campus, completed in two phases in 2015 and 2019. Designed by the Joint Venture team of MHM and BMA, the 395,088 square foot facility was conceived to enhance services for students and the entire university community.
The project was carefully planned and executed in two phases to align with the campus's needs and desired timeline. Phase I delivered a new bookstore, Career Services office space, dining facilities, and additional office spaces. A key feature of this phase was a new landscaped outdoor plaza, creating a vibrant connection between the pedestrian mall, the Haslam Building, and the iconic Hill. Phase II expanded the building's footprint westward toward Volunteer Boulevard, completing the dining areas, auditorium and ballroom, student recreation areas, lounges, and meeting spaces.
The Student Union's design reflects and celebrates the campus community, reinforcing university branding, supporting innovative learning, attracting top talent, integrating technology, and promoting collaboration. The building boasts a wide variety of meeting and collaboration spaces to enhance the student learning experience. These range from a 12,000 square foot ballroom equipped with the latest AV technology and movable walls to large conference rooms that serve as teaching/training venues. Career Services also features mock-interview rooms with integrated interview simulation technology to support and facilitate a specialized educational experience.
The Student Union has garnered several awards, including:

Expanding Services and Meeting Growing Needs
The Student Union provides a central location for various essential services and amenities. These include dining options, meeting spaces, a bookstore, and the Career Services office. The building's design incorporates technology and promotes collaboration, creating an environment conducive to learning and student engagement.
Recognizing the increasing demand for student gathering spaces, the university is investing in further upgrades to the Student Union. A new plaza and entrance facing Cumberland Avenue are planned, along with an outdoor amphitheater and a food truck park area. This $5.35 million project, designed by Hedstrom Landscape Architecture, is slated to be completed in August.
Addressing Basic Needs and Future Developments
The university is also focused on addressing the basic needs of its students. The Center for Basic Needs, currently located in the Student Union, provides resources to help students with food, housing, transportation, and health care. To improve accessibility, the center will be relocated to the renovated Presidential Court Building.
The Presidential Court Building, which opened in 1966 as part of the Presidential Court Complex for housing and dining, will undergo a $40.5 million renovation (pending State Building Commission approval). The interior will be transformed to include an esports complex, multimedia lounge, multipurpose rooms, and new office spaces for Greek Life, dining, and off-campus student life services. The renovation is scheduled to begin "very shortly" and be completed in 2027.
These renovations are driven by the university's growing enrollment, with Chancellor Donde Plowman aiming to enroll 55,000 students by 2030. The new Student Success building, set to open by the fall 2027 semester, is another key component of this expansion.
