University of Toledo Federal Credit Union: Serving the Rocket Community for Decades

The University of Toledo Federal Credit Union (UTFCU) has been a steadfast financial partner for the University of Toledo community for over half a century. Founded on the principles of member ownership, mission-driven service, and deep connection to the UToledo community, UTFCU has grown from humble beginnings to a full-service financial institution serving thousands nationwide.

A Foundation Built on Service: The Early Years

On March 24, 1964, thirteen enthusiastic members established the Credit Union as T.U.T. Federal Credit Union to serve the employees of The University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio. In the beginning, the services were limited and the money short, but the founding members were committed to building a strong financial resource for their colleagues. The Credit Union’s name was officially changed to the University of Toledo Federal Credit Union in October 1976, and its services were expanded to include employees of the Medical College of Ohio.

Expanding Reach and Services

Since its establishment in 1964, the University of Toledo Federal Credit Union has broadened its membership to include faculty, staff, students, physicians, alumni, and families of the University and the UT Medical Center. Over the years, membership has grown from the original 13 to more than 7,000 members nationwide. UTFCU is a full-service financial institution that offers products and services from savings, checking, and loans to online account access and e-statements, as well as discounts for members to area attractions, including the Toledo Zoo, Cedar Point, and Rave Cinemas.

Commitment to Members: Benefits and Accessibility

Once a member of the UT Federal Credit Union, you are always a member. UTFCU also offers more than 4,000 shared branching locations nationwide where members can access their accounts to deposit, transfer or withdraw money, cash checks and more. To find out additional information and to locate a shared branch. For international travelers, UTFCU now offers an international prepaid card. The new Prepaid Travel “Chip Card,” also known as EMV, is available at the UT Federal Credit Union.

Investing in Education: UTFCU Scholarships

The University of Toledo Federal Credit Union (UTFCU) is awarding up to $5,000 in scholarships to support the academic goals of its student members. UTFCU recognizes that education is an investment in the future and aims to help lighten the financial load so students can focus on success. Awards totaling up to $5,000 are available to eligible UTFCU members. This opportunity is open to graduating high school seniors (Class of 2026) or students who graduated within the past three years. Recipients must plan to pursue undergraduate studies at least part-time. Applicants must submit a completed application and a 500-word essay addressing how credit unions help young adults manage financial challenges - compared to banks and fintech - with real examples and research. Focus on clear structure, originality, proper research citations, and thoughtful examples - essays are evaluated by the UTFCU Board of Directors. Those who are not yet members are still eligible to join and apply by visiting any UTFCU branch.
