Navigating Knowledge: Exploring University of Toledo Library Resources

The University of Toledo (UToledo) offers a wealth of library resources designed to support students, faculty, and researchers in their academic pursuits. These resources extend beyond the traditional book stacks, encompassing a wide range of materials, from online databases and scholarly journals to multimedia content and specialized collections. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the library resources available at UToledo, guiding users on how to effectively access and utilize these valuable assets.

UToledo Library Catalog: A Centralized Discovery Tool

The UToledo Library Catalog serves as the primary gateway to the university's extensive collections. It encompasses all formats of materials, including books, journals, articles, videos, and more, across all campus locations. This comprehensive catalog integrates the holdings of various libraries within the UToledo system, such as:

  • Carlson Library: The main library on campus, housing a diverse collection of resources across various disciplines.

  • Canaday Center: A specialized archive and research center focusing on local and regional history.

  • Mulford Health Science Library: Dedicated to supporting the research and educational needs of the health sciences programs.

  • LaValley Law Library: Providing legal resources and research support for the College of Law.

  • Engineering Library: Catering to the information needs of the College of Engineering.

  • St. Charles Hospital Library: Serving the medical community at St. Charles Hospital.

The UToledo Library Catalog allows users to search for materials by keyword, author, title, subject, or ISBN. It provides detailed information about each item, including its location, availability, and call number.

Course Reserves

The library buys some textbooks for popular introductory classes, and course instructors can place copies of their textbooks on reserve for classes. Use the search box below to search by Professor or by Course Number. A Keyword search using author AND words from the title is usually the best way to find your books. Be aware that there may be multiple editions and publication years… You can also search by ISBN, but be aware that an ISBN refers not only to a specific edition/year of a book, but also to the specific binding.

Expanding Horizons: OhioLINK and WorldCat

Beyond the UToledo Library Catalog, students have access to a broader network of resources through OhioLINK and WorldCat.

OhioLINK: A Statewide Library Consortium

OhioLINK is a consortium of over 80 college and university libraries in Ohio, along with the State Library of Ohio and a few public library systems. This collaborative network allows UToledo students to access materials from other institutions throughout the state. Materials listed as "AVAILABLE" in the OhioLINK catalog can be requested and delivered to UToledo.

WorldCat: A Global Library Network

WorldCat is a global catalog encompassing the holdings of libraries all over the world. This vast database enables users to discover resources that may not be available within the UToledo or OhioLINK systems.

Accessing Public Library Resources

UToledo students can further expand their access to information by utilizing the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library System (TLCPL). TLCPL tends to have more popular fiction and general interest books than the UToledo Libraries.

Obtaining a Library Card

UToledo students can obtain a free TLCPL library card by showing proof of attendance to the University of Toledo with their Rocket Card or by providing a home address in Ohio.

Online Databases and E-Resources

The library subscribes to a wide range of online databases providing access to scholarly articles, e-books, and other digital resources. These databases cover various disciplines and offer powerful search capabilities. There are some electronic books that may be free for your use. Some Google Books offer partial or full views of their text.

Multimedia Resources

Textbook Resources

The University Bookstore, operated by Barnes & Noble, has the official textbooks for UToledo classes. We do have some course textbooks available on course reserve for limited-time use.
