University of Utah Neurology Program: Advancing Neurological Care, Research, and Education
The University of Utah's Department of Neurology is dedicated to combating neurological diseases through specialized patient care, groundbreaking research, and the training of future physicians. As part of the Clinical Neurosciences Center, their neurology specialists treat patients with a variety of neurological disorders ranging from the common to the most complex, providing comprehensive primary and tertiary neurologic care, as well as neurologic consultation for patients who may return home and patients who must stay overnight.
Comprehensive Neurological Care and Expertise
The University of Utah Hospital serves as the Mountain West's only tertiary neurological and neurosurgical care center. The University of Utah is a robust academic center situated in the heart of the Mountain West and servicing patients from a wide catchment area, attracting patients from as far north as Montana, as far south as New Mexico and Arizona, as far east as Colorado, and as far west as Oregon. As the Mountain West Region’s only academic medical center, the University of Utah provides a multidisciplinary approach to care, giving their patients access to a full range of specialty and subspecialty services. Combined with this collaborative approach, their neurology specialists use the latest advancements in imaging technology to accurately diagnose and develop individualized treatment plans providing the best possible outcomes for their patients.
Education and Training Programs
The Department of Neurology at the University of Utah is committed to educating the next generation of neurologists and neurodiagnostic technologists.
Neurology Residency Program
The neurology residency program at the University of Utah is a comprehensive three-year program, fully accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), which provides each resident with thorough grounding in neurology as a clinical discipline. In 2011, the residency program successfully became re-accredited by the ACGME through the year 2023. The leadership of the program is genuinely interested in each resident as an individual. The program is designed to increase autonomy and flexibility in training progressively over the training years.
Fellowship Programs
The ACGME-accredited Vascular Neurology Fellowship at the University of Utah is a one year fellowship, with an option to complete a second year. The University of Utah was funded as an NIH StrokeNet Regional Coordinating Center in 2013, providing exposure to national stroke trials and leadership. At the University of Utah, their neurology department offers several areas of further specialization including: ACGME-accredited programs, UCNS accredited programs, and programs for which no standard accreditation has been established.

Training for Neurodiagnostic Technologists
The Utah END Institute is a training and educational program for neurodiagnostic technologists. It is a subsidiary of University of Utah Health at the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. Those enrolled in the Institute receive specialized clinical training in recording the electrical activity of the nervous system. Technologists learn to operate various instruments and equipment. They develop skills and techniques to provide the best quality neurodiagnostic studies available. The program and its staff are dedicated to excellence, quality care, and exceptional patient service.
Medical Student Education
Medical students, students in the physician's assistant program and pharmacy students may rotate on the neurology service. Medical students at the University of Utah School of Medicine have a scheduled one-month rotation in neurology. The rotation includes: two weeks in-patient service, which includes our neuro-intensive care service and two weeks in both general neurology and subspecialty clinics.
Opportunities for Affiliates
Affiliates looking to pursue unique educational and/or research opportunities in the Department of Neurology can elect one of three routes: Shadower, Clinical Observer, or Volunteer. Each of these experiences is set by a varying list of conditions and restrictions.
Research and Innovation
Faculty with the Department of Neurology have created resources and training specific to several conditions and aspects of neurologic care. In addition, many of the providers are faculty members who are at the forefront of neurology research and educate the next generation of neurologists through the School of Medicine Department of Neurology. Research Mentors and potential collaboration opportunities are too numerous to list, but include: Cardiac arrhythmia center (CARMA, Dr. Marrouche), HHT and CCM centers (Dr. Kevin Whitehead), genetic epidemiology (Dr. Albright), hematopathology (Drs. Rogers and Smock), rehabilitation science (Dr. Richards, thrombosis (Dr. Weyrich), vascular genetics (Dr. Li), and advanced neuroimaging (Dr.

Utah Center for Dizziness and Balance (UCDC)
The UCDC was formed in 2021 by Janene Holmberg, PT, (Intermountain Health) and Judith Warner, MD, (Department of Neurology, Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine). Since then, the UCDC has been working to be a resource for both patients experiencing chronic dizziness and their physicians.
Headache School
The mission is to educate sufferers of migraine and headaches in a collaborative, supportive environment.
Stroke Care
The University of Utah is the referral center for stroke over a four-state area, resulting in high patient volume and a large variety of vascular pathology. The University of Utah was funded as an NIH StrokeNet Regional Coordinating Center in 2013, providing exposure to national stroke trials and leadership.
