Navigating University of Utah Scholarships: A Comprehensive Guide

Securing funding for higher education is a crucial step for many aspiring students. The University of Utah offers a variety of scholarships to help students finance their education. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of the scholarship opportunities available at the University of Utah and how to navigate the application process.

Understanding the FAFSA and Key Deadlines

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a critical component of applying for financial aid, including many scholarships. The University of Utah's school code is 003675, which you'll need to include on your FAFSA.

Key Deadlines:

  • FAFSA Deadline: February 1 for Fall 2026.
  • Scholarship Deferment Confirmation: May 1, 2026.
  • Deferment Application: No later than the first day of classes (August 24, 2026).

FAFSA Requirements and Updates:

The FAFSA underwent significant changes to simplify the application process. The new FAFSA asks significantly fewer questions than forms in previous years. The updated FAFSA aims to streamline the process of applying for financial aid.

To access the FAFSA, you'll need a Student Aid Identifier (FSA ID). This requires creating a StudentAid.gov account.

  • Social Security Number (SSN): You'll generally need to enter your Social Security number (unless you're a citizen of the Freely Associated States) to create your StudentAid.gov account.
  • No SSN: If a contributor (i.e. a parent contributing information on the FAFSA) does not have an SSN, they can still obtain an FSA ID.
  • Student vs. Contributor: Students and contributors fill out separate sections of the FAFSA.
  • Direct Data Exchange: The new FAFSA allows you to transfer federal tax information directly into the form using the Financial Aid Direct Data Exchange.

Important Considerations for the FAFSA:

  • Ensure accuracy when completing the FAFSA application.
  • The University of Utah will update its understanding of financial aid rules as clarifying information is released regarding changes to the Reconciliation Bill, also known as the One Big Beautiful Bill.

How to Find and Apply for Scholarships:

  1. Sign In: Click "Sign In" in the top right of the scholarship portal using your University of Utah sign-in credentials.
  2. General Application: Upon signing in for the first time, complete your General Application.
  3. Conditional Application: Depending on your major, you may be prompted to complete a Conditional Application, which is required for scholarships in your major or area of study.
  4. Recommended Scholarships: Once you complete the General Application (and Conditional Application, if applicable), scholarships that are currently “open” will be recommended to you if you meet the basic criteria. Note that being recommended does not guarantee you meet the qualifications.
  5. Apply for Specific Scholarships: Scholarships with the word “apply” in the Action column (after you sign in) require further action on your part to be considered. Click “apply” to complete the application process.
  6. Eligibility Requirements: Carefully read the scholarship eligibility requirements to ensure you meet them.

Important Notes on Applying:

  • File Uploads: If you are asked to upload a resume, letter of support, or other supporting documentation, the system will not allow for punctuation (commas, apostrophes, and periods) to be used in the file name. Rename any file that includes these.
  • Automatic Matching: There are some scholarship opportunities for which you do not have to apply, but will instead be automatically matched after you complete your General Application (and Conditional Application if there is one).
  • Scholarship Amount: The scholarship amount awarded may vary from the amount listed, based on the availability of funds.
  • General Application Retention: The General Application you completed will be on file until August of each year.

Data Usage:

Scholarship application information may be reviewed by scholarship selection committees, faculty, development, donors, scholarships & the financial aid office, as well as other areas at the University of Utah. Once a scholarship application, recommendations, and/or a thank you note are submitted, the information will be retained by the University of Utah.

Maintaining Scholarship Eligibility

To maintain your scholarship, adhere to the following requirements:

  • Enroll in a minimum number of credit hours each semester.
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress and good standing requirements.
  • You must continue to be a Federal Pell Grant recipient each year (if applicable).

Your scholarship award is generally available for use during the academic year (i.e., fall and spring semesters). Your scholarship award generally is available until May 1, 2026. Scholarship recipients considering a deferment should confirm by May 1, 2026 their intent to enroll in order to accept their scholarship. You must apply for a deferment no later than the first day of classes (August 24, 2026).

Scholarships may not cover abroad programs or fee charges, as well as other scholarships and grants received. The student’s cost of attendance will be covered by grant and scholarship funds from all sources up to the point of maximum eligibility.

  • The Opportunity Scholarship: This scholarship encourages students to complete advanced courses while in high school to prepare academically for college. Students must apply during their senior year of high school.
  • T.H. Bell Education Scholarship Program: This program aims to recruit and support students who are interested in serving as public educators in Utah and who enroll in an approved education program. T.H. Bell Scholarships may cover up to the cost of resident tuition, fees, and books.

Many state aid and institution aid programs require students to complete a FAFSA. Completing this application allows students to qualify for federal grants, work-study opportunities, and loans.

Additional Financial Aid Resources

  • Cost of Attendance: Scholarships that help cover “cost of attendance” can typically help students with tuition, fees, required books, room and board, and transportation.
  • FAFSA Completion Nights: Many Utah high schools host free FAFSA completion nights to help students complete the online form.
  • FAFSA Resources: You can also find more resources to help complete the FAFSA here.
  • Short-Term Grant: The Board of Higher Education has approved a short-term grant for students who can’t complete the FAFSA due to new form limitations. Eligible students must be enrolled at a USHE institution, demonstrate unsuccessful FAFSA completion efforts, and demonstrate financial need.

All financial aid programs listed on this page are subject to change based on legislative or administrative action. Funding is not guaranteed.
