Scholarships for Incoming Freshmen and Transfer Students
Merit-Based Scholarships
UWA provides merit-based scholarships to incoming freshmen and transfer students with less than 24 credit hours, who demonstrate strong academic performance. To be eligible, applicants should complete the scholarship application within their application portal after being accepted. These scholarships are awarded to students with a minimum ACT score of 21 or an SAT score of 1060, or a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The value of these scholarships ranges from $2,000.00 to $12,000.00 per year and can be renewed for up to four academic years, provided the student maintains a minimum 3.0 GPA. On-campus residency is required for the first two years at UWA for recipients.
Leadership Scholarships
These awards are available to entering on-campus freshmen or transfer students with fewer than 24 credit hours who demonstrate outstanding leadership abilities through their involvement in high school, community, or religious activities. Applicants must have a minimum ACT score of 19 or an SAT score of 990, or a minimum GPA of 2.5. Recipients must reside on campus for their first two years at UWA. The awards vary, with amounts reaching up to $2,500.00 per year.
Valedictorian and Salutatorian Scholarships
UWA offers Valedictorian and Salutatorian scholarships to on-campus freshmen recognized as the top two students in their graduating high school class. These scholarships require on-campus residency for the first two years at UWA. To apply, students must submit the online UWA Scholarship Application.
Scholarships for Specific Fields of Study
Julia S. Tutwiler Scholarship Fund
The Julia S. Tutwiler Scholarship Fund supports deserving on-campus students majoring in education. Named after an accomplished and innovative educator who played a pivotal role in the establishment of UWA, this scholarship awards two students $2,000.00 each year. The scholarship is renewable, but funding beyond the initial award year is not guaranteed, requiring students to reapply each year.

Jessica Hill Memorial Marine Biology Scholarship
Created in memory of Lt. Hill, this scholarship promotes the education of full-time undergraduate students pursuing a degree in Marine Biology within the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The primary goal is to help defray the cost of attendance during the summer programs at Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL).
Project INSPIRE
Through the NSF-funded INSPIRE scholarship, UWA juniors and seniors majoring in a STEM field and pursuing teacher certification may apply for up to $14,400.00 annually.
UWA BOSS II Scholarship
The UWA BOSS II scholarship supports students financially and academically to complete their college degree within four years, ultimately leading to a career in biological or environmental sciences or joining graduate or professional schools.
Alabama Power Scholarship
This scholarship is available to full-time UWA junior and senior students majoring in Environmental Science who are legal residents of Alabama. Interested students can contact the Dean of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at (205) 652-3414.
Darryl Hutcheson Memorial Scholarship
The Darryl Hutcheson Memorial Scholarship is available to students majoring in technology in engineering technology. The amount of the award varies.

Trustee Legacy Scholarship
Established in 2019, the Trustee Legacy Scholarship is available to applicants who are the child or stepchild of a graduate of the University of West Alabama (formerly Livingston University).

J. L. Bedsole Scholars Program

Black Warrior Electric Cooperative Foundation Scholarship Program
To qualify for this scholarship, the student must be a graduating high school senior who is the dependent of a BWEMC member. The award is good for four years and can be used for tuition, books, room, board, and other school-related expenses.

The Ronald Dra Graham Leadership Award is administered each year to Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity members based on the criteria of students with the greatest financial need.
Skipper âFiremanâ Scholarship
The Skipper âFiremanâ Scholarship is available to students from Clarke and Washington Counties who are currently enrolled at UWA and work with the Livingston Fire Department.
Lauderdale County Veterans Scholarship
The Lauderdale County Veterans Scholarship is available to graduates from Waterloo High School in Waterloo, Alabama or a high school in Lauderdale County, Alabama. Preference will be given to incoming freshmen but is available to all students from Lauderdale County, Alabama.
Scholarships for Academic Competitions
Kelly Land Writing Competition Scholarship
A $1,000.00 one-time scholarship is awarded to an entering freshman who has won the Kelly Land writing competition held during the studentâs senior year. A $500.00 one-time scholarship will be awarded to the second-place winner. Transfer students are also able to compete in the transfer student division.
James Pate History Essay Competition Scholarship
A $1,000.00 one-time scholarship is awarded to an entering freshman who has won the James P. Pate History Essay competition held during the studentâs senior year. A $500.00 one-time scholarship will be awarded to the second-place winner. Transfer students are also able to compete in the transfer student division.
Scholarships for Specific Circumstances
James P. Homer Memorial Scholarship
The James P. Homer Memorial Scholarship is open to entering freshmen at the University of West Alabama who demonstrate financial need, leadership, and academic abilities. Applicants must also submit letters of recommendation.
Winton and Naomi Wise Memorial Scholarship
The Winton and Naomi Wise Memorial Scholarship is open to students at the University of West Alabama who have a high ACT score and demonstrate high academic standards, leadership, and financial need.
June Crawford Scholarship

Out-of-State Graduate Student Housing Award
The UWA Graduate Student Housing Award offers $2,500 per semester for up to six semesters to out-of-state or international students who maintain a 3.0 GPA or its international equivalent. Recipients must live on campus at UWA to qualify for this award.
T. Raiford Noland Scholarship
The T. Raiford Noland Scholarship is available to students who are enrolled in the College of Business and majoring in Accounting.
Transfer Student Scholarships and Partnerships
Community College Partnerships
UWA has established partnerships with several community colleges to facilitate seamless transfer processes and provide scholarship opportunities for community college students pursuing bachelorâs degrees. Participating schools include Bevill State Community College, Enterprise State Community College, Northwest Shoals Community College, and Coastal Alabama Community College in Alabama, as well as Meridian Community College, East Mississippi Community College, East Central Community College, and Itawamba Community College in Mississippi.
These agreements ensure a clearly defined transfer process and enhanced communication with students regarding transfer from the community college to UWA, including academic advising and scholarship opportunities. Students with a minimum 2.0 GPA and 45 to 50 transferable credit hours are guaranteed admission. Academic scholarships ranging from $3,000 to $4,000 per year are available to eligible transfer students and are renewable for up to four consecutive semesters.
