Navigating the University of West Florida: A Comprehensive Guide to the Campus Map and Buildings

The University of West Florida (UWF) offers a vibrant and expansive campus environment. To help students, faculty, staff, and visitors navigate its grounds, UWF provides a comprehensive campus map featuring a wayfinding tool. This article serves as a guide to understanding and utilizing the UWF campus map, exploring its features, and offering helpful tips for seamless navigation.

Understanding the UWF Campus Map

The UWF campus map is a valuable resource for locating buildings, parking areas, trails, and other points of interest on the Pensacola campus, UWF Emerald Coast in Fort Walton Beach, and UWF Historic Trust in Historic Pensacola. The map is designed to be user-friendly and accessible, offering various features to enhance the navigation experience.

Utilizing the Wayfinding Tool

One of the key features of the UWF campus map is its wayfinding tool, which allows users to generate routes between different locations on campus. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to use the wayfinding tool:

  1. Accessing the Wayfinding Tool: Click the wayfinding button in the search bar on the UWF campus map or for an individual location marker (e.g., John C. Pace Library) to open the wayfinding tool. Please note that locations on the map with a polygon shape overlay indicates construction is in progress at that location.

  2. Selecting a Starting Point: Type to find and select the desired starting UWF location in the search field next to the A pinpoint icon that states search for a route starting point. The "Use My Location" option may not provide an accurate user location on the map. The "Drop Map Pins" option will allow users to move the pins to specific locations on the map to create the wayfinding route.

  3. Generating Directions: Click the "Get Directions" button to generate the wayfinding route on the campus then follow the path line and instructions to get to your desired UWF destination!

  4. Customizing Distance Units: Click "Options" under the location search fields to switch between Feet / Miles and Kilometers / Meters for the Distance Units.

Accessibility Resources

The UWF campus map also highlights accessibility resources available on the Pensacola campus and UWF Emerald Coast. These resources are marked on the map to assist individuals with disabilities in navigating the campus effectively. For additional assistance, UWF students may contact Student Accessibility Resources.

Navigating the Trails

UWF is known for its beautiful natural surroundings, including several trails that wind through the campus. However, navigating these trails requires careful planning and preparation.

Limitations of Digital Wayfinding:

It's important to note that the map requires a good cell network or Wi-Fi connection to work, and the wayfinding feature will require a good GPS satellite connection to pinpoint your location. These connections are not always reliable on the trails while deep in the woods. Additionally, the wayfinding routes only apply to the trails themselves, if you are not on an established trail, the service will not be of use to you.

Recommendations for Trail Navigation:

You can try wayfinding out on the trail, however, we suggest downloading an offline copy of the trail map and familiarizing yourself with the trails before going out, bringing an experienced friend along with you, always sticking to established trails and keeping an eye out for tree blazes and trail signs. Some trails can be long, but they all eventually reach a trailhead near Pate Road or the Edward Ball Nature Trail (boardwalk). If you find a long and narrow clearing, you can follow the power lines south to safety as well.

Providing Feedback

University Marketing and Communications welcomes feedback on the campus map and wayfinding tool. Your feedback helps improve the map and ensure it meets the needs of the UWF community.
