The Mall at University Town Center (UTC) in Sarasota County, Florida, stands as a prominent regional shopping destination. History and Development

The Mall at University Town Center's journey began in 2002 when Benderson Corporation acquired the land with the vision of developing a regional mall. The project gained momentum in 2007 when Nordstrom signed a letter of intent to open a store at the mall. Soon after, Neiman Marcus and Macy's followed suit, expressing their intent to join the development. The initial plan was to break ground in 2008 and open the mall in 2010.

In May 2008, The Taubman Corp. joined the project in a 50/50 split with Benderson, further solidifying the mall's development. However, the original timeline was adjusted, and on October 15, 2012, a revamped version of the Mall at University Town Center was unveiled. Macy's reaffirmed its commitment to the project, and Dillard's and Saks Fifth Avenue were added to the roster of anchor stores. Groundbreaking finally occurred on October 15, 2012, and The Mall at University Town Center officially opened its doors on October 16, 2014.

The District East and The District West are two shopping centers located just east and west of the Mall at UTC. The District West includes retailers such as Super Target, Old Navy, Best Buy, Ulta Beauty, Petco, and Dick's Sporting Goods. Like many retail centers, The Mall at University Town Center has faced challenges and changes in recent years.

One notable closure was the Christmas Tree Shops, which announced on June 29, 2023, that it would be liquidating all of its stores nationwide.
